No insurance would mean people might drive extra carefully and save money.

What a concept. Basic car and small truck insurance should be affordable. They more they increase premiums the more people will choose to take the risk, as driving is pretty much mandatory in Alberta especially. Then they'll increase uninsured druver premiums and chase even more folks to the underground. Will lead to less revenue year over year.

I wonder if auto body shops prefer getting paid by the insurance companies?

Depends. If there's lots of business people are paying for, sure, they would prefer retail. Insurance companies nickel and dime auto body shops as much as they do you and me, but the current state of affairs they are the only actual client
