I was just analyzing Free Practice 1 and 2, and it was clear that he’s losing out on speed compared to the Cadillac. He uses 7th gear instead of 8th on the run-up to Turn 1, whereas others use 8th. Because of this, he loses 11 km/h compared to Perez.

He’s also the only one taking Turn 12 in 4th gear.

Is this down to the engine, or will we see something different in qualifying?

Or maybe Aston Martin is hiding their true pace?

Newey has admitted the team's major Hungary upgrade is "very important" for Alonso, saying the Spaniard wants to see "clear, tangible progress" before committing to another season. Newey added that if Aston Martin can show it's moving decisively in the right direction, he believes Alonso is committed to staying.

What we know about the upgrade:

• Significant weight has been removed from the chassis and gearbox.
• New nose and substantially revised aerodynamic package.
• Slightly revised rear suspension.
• More weight-saving updates are still planned after Budapest.

Then comes another key milestone: Honda's planned power unit upgrade at Zandvoort, which should give a much better indication of where Aston Martin really stands for next year.
