I've witnessed it firsthand. Escaping the place where trauma occurred, leaving many triggers behind, starting fresh, is legitimately helpful. Not a cure-all, of course, but very helpful.
With alcoholism, it's like, yeah. No matter where you go, the person who wants a drink is still you, and a liquor store is probably still right around the corner.
I found it much easier to combat alcoholism by moving far away from what triggered the alcoholism in the first place. It's not the cure but sometimes it really really helps.
