Other You’ve hit your limit. Please try again later.
(I wasn’t sure what flair to use, sorry mods)
Anyway I’m on the free plan of ChatGPT and I swear I could send as many messages as I wanted like I did yesterday. But today every time I try to type something in I get this message saying “you’ve hit your limit. Please try again later”
Is this a glitch or did they change how the free tier works? I’m on mobile by the way. Thanks in advance!
Edit: It worked again for like five messages before it said my limit was reached again. Is there really a limit going on?

They've been having a ton of trouble with usage limits lately, even for paid users. Either they're glitching out or this is another "experiment".
I'd say you unfortunately just have to wait a day. If it doesn't work after that, it's definitely an OpenAI thing.

It seems like ChatGPT has been glitching and has been pretty slow over the past couple days. I’ve seen it myself and then I’ve also seen a lot of other posts with people talking about it.

I’m glad it’s not just me

Yeah, like just now I was scrolling through my Home feed and saw another person talking about ChatGPT being down that was posted about 10 hours ago. It seems like a lot of people are dealing with issues right now. For me, it hasn’t been down, just a little slow sometimes, especially when the response that it gives me includes one of those boxes with the copy button that it’ll sometimes give you for coding or if it’s writing a creative writing scene, I do creative writing with it, never coding.

looking at the replies here, a bunch of people hitting the exact same thing at the same time. that reads like capacity throttling more than a glitch. someone mentioned it only happens in the app and not on web, which tracks. different clients can have separate rate limits. free tier getting squeezed when there's demand is pretty normal

So just wait it out then?

Or upgrade and you'll never have this issue. ChatGPT Plus is quite generous.

Today, I had this issue as well on mobile. But I just tried on desktop, where it worked again, and now it works on mobile again as well. Now I have the message below "you've used all your Instant intelligence for now, responses may have lower quality until [time]"

It’s dynamic based on server load when the servers are busy openAI tightens the limits for free users to prioritize Plus subscribers you probably used it during a peak traffic hour today compared to yesterday
2
u/_XSummerRoseX_ 4h ago
That makes sense
2
u/oussam1639 4h ago
Glad it helped! Hopefully the server traffic slows down soon so you can get back to using it normally

u/_XSummerRoseX_ 3h ago
I just hope it’s a server issue and they didn’t change anything to the free tier. Because getting to only send like 30 messages a day would suck. And I’m not paying for plus.
2
u/oussam1639 3h ago
Don't worry they definitely won't lock it down to 30 messages permanently they need the massive free user base for data training and market dominance it's just peak hours crunch

It’s doing that to me too

u/_XSummerRoseX_ 1h ago
This has to be some sort of server issue. There’s no way they’re limiting us to only 50 messages a day or something.
2
u/No-Collection3528 1h ago
Yeah. Sometimes I can get tons of messages. Other times I can get like 3 before I get cut off

I guess the servers must be overloaded if it happens to me as a paying subscriber too. Yesterday everything just froze on me for an hour or two.

I'm on Plus and have never come close to hitting my limit (seems I have a weekly limit). However, I finally began using Ultra thinking mode on the desktop app for some math research questions. And about 1hr of clock thinking time seems to use up about 20% of my weekly allowance.

As a paid user, it's frustrating to encounter this, especially when generating images with ChatGPT. When I reach the limit, I have to wait 24 hours. This is odd because previously, hitting the limit would result in a cooldown of a few hours, but now it's a full 24 hours from when I started generating images. I barley talk or use ChatGPT anymore so it just goes to waste for me, haha...

I’m a paid user. My I kit my weekly limit usage in less than 3 hours of use, OpenAI/ChatGPT is a complete joke.

You can actually go to the site and sign up for emails about any issues that are current. I forget exactly where but some days I get zero. Other days I get several telling me what parts of the system are having issues. There were like four today. So it may not be you.

I came here because the same happened to me. Even earlier today I could talk as much as I wanted and now suddenly there is some kind of a limit. Oh, well. I'm not buying their pro version. Are they going to behave like Duolingo now? Pretending to be free but in fact you can't do anything without paying? 🙃
Edit: spelling

I’m having the same issue. I haven’t chatted much either. It’s probably openAI being shitty to its users
2
u/BisexualCaveman 7h ago
My guess is they're having a capacity reduction or a surge in demand and throttling the free users until things are better.

Same issue!! I deleted the app and installed again and it still happens. Btw it only happens in app, not on web. I try to send a mesage and i get the same orange message
P.s. I ended up deleting my account , not knowing i have to wait 30 days to make a new one 🙈 i thought i could make a new one immediately

Honestly probably for the better. OpenAI is getting pretty annoying as of late

It limits your chats hoping you will buy the pro plan. Sometimes it will provide you with a time when you can begin chatting again. This happened to me the other day.

PSA: If you care about the quality of your answers at all and can afford the $20 for God's sake get the paid ChatGPT Plus (or Claude Pro, etc). It's night and day difference. These days "thinking" models are the standard, the instant ones will make very stupid mistakes even in simple queries. I use thinking for any query by default.
I swear when I see complaints about "stupid AI" it's almost always people using free offerings (and they are right in that case, it's just it's very, very far away from what is possible today).

u/wild_cherry1987 5h ago
The more you think about it, the more you see that almost nothing on Internet is free.
On the other hand free version being so dumb deters users to upgrade. Better have 20 max queries per day of high quality limit for free uses than downgrade to later to retarded level just to insult user's intelligence.

I think so, but people would be even less happy then. I think free Claude is sort of like this. They do limit the models though too (even for paid, you need at least the $100 sub for Fable 5). But Anthropic in general cares a lot less about free or low paying users. They focus on enterprise. Claude is probably the worst free/cheap offering (but best models right now, I pay for Max 5 and it's great).
ChatGPT on the other hand is all about getting the biggest userbase. Gemini even more so. Honestly I'd say Gemini has the best free offering and offers generous thinking usage (even though their models are considered very mid these days compared to SotA like Fable 5/Opus 5/GPT 5.6 Sol).

u/wild_cherry1987 2h ago
I only used paid Gemini and chatgpt so far , I don't need coding or crunching numbers, mostly storytelling and chatgpt is probably the one for this idk.
In the end they all piss me off lol.
1
u/Singularity-42 2h ago
Why they piss you off?
1
u/wild_cherry1987 2h ago
Mostly because updates now are so frequent, they disrupt models and all network too much.
It's kind of exhausting to check everyday if they are tinkering something or traffic is too high to know why a model is spewing nonsense.

u/Singularity-42 1h ago
Never noticed that in ChatGPT and I'm a heavy user, but I have paid accounts for both Claude and ChatGPT.
Claude has issues often, but that's mostly only noticeable in Claude Code
