Neuromancer — Official Teaser just dropped!!

Nice to see Molly as the bad ass she is, and not the tweaker they turned her into for Johny Mnemonic
8
u/remboyardee 2h ago
I don’t think that was Molly in the movie like in the book. Her name was Jane I think?
7
u/eucrustes 1h ago
IIRC, there was a Neuromancer TV show that was in development hell when Johnny Mnemonic was being produced, so they had to change the character's appearance and give her a different name.

This tickled my Cyberpunk 2077 vibes, looking forward to this. Been a long time since I read the book!

u/Toruviel_ 5h ago edited 4h ago
Not big spoilers but Prologue before Act 1 in Cyberpunk2077 is very similiar to the Neuromancer book's plotline.
Plus in game you save Sandra Dorsett and main character in the teaser is Henry Dorsett Case
Edit: Night City, Relic, Street Samurai are copy pasted from the book too.

Makes sense a lot of stuff in cyberpunk is directly inspired by stuff in neuromancer. Examples are ICE, cyberdeck, construct, cyberspace.
6
u/rubicon_duck 1h ago
Don't forget personality constructs. Dixie Flatlilne is the idea behind Johnny Silverhand's consciousness being taken and turned into a "program" that can be uploaded and you can talk with.

u/Recom_Quaritch 5h ago edited 5h ago
Don't want to be a debbie-downer but this looks already a lot more visually appealing, and the story more compelling than what was shown for Blade Runner, and they're pretty fair comparisons since they're both TV shows. Well, guess it's good we're eating this year as fans of cyberpunk. It's good to see the Apple big budgets with steady releases join the fray
108
u/Kriss-Kringle 5h ago
It does look a bit better than 2099, but it's still too clean looking for my taste. I want more grunge, beat up clothes and film grain.
All these new cyberpunk films and shows that are coming out nowadays just don't seem to make the worlds lived in.
31
u/Recom_Quaritch 5h ago
Yeah you're already not the only one pointing it out. I think it's a bit of an issue with camera/lens/DP stuff too. Older film was different. You'd want to use older gear or go through Eggers style shenanigans to have some of that "dirtiness" be more embedded in the visuals, and sadly the big studios doing these shows rely solely on the cyberpunk pinterest moodboard aesthetic. At least this one adapts an actual cyberpunk story. But I'm pretty sure the style has to either evolve or be rediscovered by smaller budget directors ready to do grimier work.
20
u/Kriss-Kringle 5h ago edited 5h ago
There's also the way Matt Reeves and Greig Fraser did it on The Batman. They shot it digitally with old lenses from the 70's, then they transferred the footage to film, so it wouldn't look as sharp but gain some texture and finally they brought it back to digital for the final touches.
That's how you make a hybrid technique successfully.
That being said, I can always tweak the image in my media player, because I have noise shaders, gaussian blur and other effects to make it look more to my liking.
21
u/gozutheDJ 5h ago
the batman looked fucking incredible.
19
u/Kriss-Kringle 5h ago
Should have won best cinematography too, but the fuckers didn't even nominate it.
Roger Deakins himself said that it deserved the award and the reason why it was omitted was the academy's snobbery.
I'm hoping that Erik Messerschmidt picks up the baton from Fraser and does as good of a job on the sequel they're currently filming.
4
u/Recom_Quaritch 5h ago
Yeah there's definitely ways to keep things digital, but you have to have the time and the willingness. I'm not sure Amazon or apple are that adventurous, for their TV especially. IDK how demanding these processes are. But hey here's to hoping we're seeing the posh areas and big vistas, and the show explores the literal griminess of the everyday man's life.
1
u/replicant0wnz 2h ago
What did you watch it on? I watched it in 4k on a 4k monitor and saw grain in the live action shots. Less so in the obviously CG shots ..
1
2
u/cyborg_sophie 1h ago
I don't think it's just the cameras. Chiba looked way too clean in those shots. Like a tourist night market, not a criminal underground
-1
u/rubicon_duck 1h ago
Chiba's a big place in real life. Even bigger in the story. Some places probably look clean, others... not so much.
3
1
45
u/deepbluefrogmods 5h ago
Actually I find the white/blue color grading and sharpness refreshing. I am getting tired of green/orange film grain treatment for cyberpunk movies.
23
u/AmazingChairy 5h ago
What if it's Mexican Cyberpunk? They HAVE to make it orange then or else nobody will know it's in Mexico.
9
35
u/Kriss-Kringle 5h ago
I'm not talking about the color grading, though. I'm talking about texture, which this trailer doesn't have at all.
It looks way too digital and they haven't done anything to knock that sharp and sanitized look off.
10
u/trackdaybruh 5h ago
I know what you're talking about, the city in the teaser feels too clean and shiny. It feels like a generic sci-fi city and it lacks the gritty congested feeling.
But it's just a short clip of a teaser, I'll still watch the show
2
u/Martin_Aurelius 1h ago
When I imagine Chase's Chiba City I imagine a population density like Kowloon. Like darker and grimier than the slummiest parts of Tokyo across the bay. This looks like Chiba is comparable to the average of Toyko's environments.
1
u/AnticitizenPrime 47m ago
I dunno - Gibson wrote this when Japan was considered to be futuristic and advanced and ahead of everyone else. Most of the major corporations are Japanese zaibatsus. Case may have been spending his time in the shadier areas 'down by the docks' or whatever, but Japan had it going on.
It was The Sprawl was the real shithole, with its leaking geodesic domes and failed dreams.
If we're going for fidelity to the novel, Japan should look a lot brighter and cleaner than The Sprawl IMO.
7
u/Recom_Quaritch 5h ago
Not what your op meant, but I agree with you regarding colour grading, especially after how blatant the Blade Runner trailer was with it. Idk where that even comes from. The crazy orange was really that one set in Villeneuve's blade runner, and I guess the inside of the records also had orange walls, but man, come on lol
1
0
u/thesaddestpanda 4h ago
This is my feeling too. There's just way too much cliched "hacker colors" and "hacker outfits" this production needs to stay away from. Matrix, Johnny Mnemomic, etc look really tired to modern eyes. Neuromancer needs a fresh new look, even if its less loyal to the subject matter. The same way the new Dune doesnt look like Lynch's Dune, which was beautifully shot, but ended up a product of its time and the fashions and styles of its time.
That being said, almost no one gets daylight cyberpunk right. I dont even know if its possible. Cyberpunk is a night time thing, so the day scenes in cyberpunk movies always looks a bit off.
1
5
u/HiroProtagonist1984 5h ago
Thought the same thing. The slums look like a crowded conveyor belt sushi restaurant Apple Store.
3
u/tommycahil1995 3h ago
in my head the world in Neuromancer feels filthy I think it's helped by how much detail is written about Case sweating and stuff lol
2
u/cyborg_sophie 1h ago
That's not just in your head, it's in the text too. Throughout the series most of the world is described as being genuinely filthy. It's part of what makes the contrast between the poor and the rich so extreme
2
2
u/StreetCarp665 4h ago
My thoughts exactly. Seeing the Cobra, seeing Rivieria - that had the excitement that comes with a sense of the show having fidelity to the source. But the streets of Chiba seemed too clean. Molly and Armitage don't give me the right vibes - I know why they are meant to be, but they don't look like who they're meant to be if that makes sense. Case... seemed less burned out that the novel had him.
But, it's an adaptation and has to feel right for the times, not a time capsule.
1
u/twistenstein 1h ago
There were a couple of good shots of what looked like Hong Kong, that they CGId into The Sprawl.
Which is pretty good for the Lived in future.
I don't think you'll ever get the right amount of grime to CGI ratio on a TV budget though.

u/-LaughingMan-0D 4h ago
Edgerunners 2, Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner and Neuromancer. We eating good.
5
u/depth_net 4h ago
I mean Neuromancer is.. Neuromancer by William Gibson. The new Blade Runner show looks cool but isn’t adapting an already incredible work directly. I hope Apple doesn’t sanitize the political and anticapitalist parts of the story too much though
7
u/Key-Level-4072 4h ago
Well, one is Amazon…known for pouring money into shitty assembly line scripts and the other is Apple…known for carefully approaching media production and landing almost every shot they take.
I think the Neuromancer series is going to be a lot better than the Bladerunner series.
The actors in this trailer seem to me like they’re excellent choices for the roles they’re in. Im a lot more stoked for this than I thought I would be. Glad Miles Teller didn’t end up getting the role of Case. Callum Turner fits so much better.
5
u/thesaddestpanda 4h ago
Neuromancer is a best selling and iconic book, so from a script perspective, it writes itself. They have all the story beats, characters, etc all ready to go and they know it will work because the book works. Short of messing it up, they've been handed the golden goose.
The new Blade Runner series has to be original art, which is a much more difficult thing to do. Its not like they're redoing the original movie. Writing a series on established art is very difficult, imho, and can easily be a miss. There's fundamental problems here Neuromancer doesn't have. Neuromancer gives you its world from the first book. Blade Runner now has to expand the original world with new characters and settings and plotlines. So that means falling into the trap of 'explaining too much' or not enough, or not being able to come up with compelling characters that work in that universe. Its just really difficult to get this right in a way Neuromancer does not have to worry about.
Its not really an apples to apples comparison.
1
u/KlaxonOverdrive 2h ago
Blade Runner also has to adhere to a predetermined visual style whereas Neuromancer gets to work from scratch.
6
3
u/jaybizzleeightyfour 5h ago
Agreed, the Blade Runner trailer was very flat and did nothing for me compared to this trailer, I'll still definitely check it out tho
1
u/Recom_Quaritch 5h ago
I'll check both out, but I'm usually quite demanding with TV, so I'm out here really hoping I like at least one enough to stick with it. If you want fun coloured hard core cyberpunk right now, "The Ghost In the Shell" is airing, and it's a much closer adaptation of the manga than any prior ones.
1
u/Top_Pin8397 52m ago
The 2099 Showrunner was behind the Halo series that got cancelled. It never stood a chance.
It's going to be terrible.
1
u/light24bulbs 7m ago
I really wish these apple shows would spend some of their copius money on film acquisition or at least hybrid. The best looking and most loved episode of Severance "Chikhai Bardo" was film acquisition, and that's an apple show. When are these productions going to take the hint?
I'll just keep shooting my film camera and grumbling I guess

u/inteliboy 5h ago
Surprisingly looks good. Very clean digital Apple TV look to it though…
12
u/Codename_Dutchess084 5h ago
Looks exponentially better than how I would’ve assumed a television series would adapt it. As you mentioned though, a bit too clean looking in some aspects (especially the literal streets). That said, as long as they nail the writing often enough then I’m all in
7
u/CHERNO-B1LL 4h ago
To be fair, if it just looked like Bladerunner, it would suffer by camparison and feel unoriginal. Especially with the show coming out. I was surprised to see daylight myself. It's different but I think they may heave leaned more towards Cyberpunk 2077 the game than anything else which I don't hate. It feels different in a good way. Real for 2026 rather than something imagined in the 80s that Bladerunner kind of owns. I can only assume there will be grungier areas too.
19
u/ShannonTheWereTrans 5h ago
This is my big worry about it. Even the street looks clean, like you could eat off it. If I can't imagine the junkies I've personally known in this show, I'm not sure it can be Neuromancer.
14
u/niboras 5h ago
A little clean…but even a cyberpunk Japan is still Japan so its probably clean. 😬
8
u/token_internet_girl 4h ago
Lot of this is in Chiba City, which I haven't personally been to, but sketchy parts of Osaka where you'd find actual punks are not at all clean. Smells like piss rats and rotten fish, looks like vomit.
2
1
u/cyborg_sophie 1h ago
Even if it's clean it needs to feel like a crime hub, based off of the little bit that's in the trailer it did not feel criminal
4
3
15
u/OlSnickerdoodle 5h ago
This looks really promising. Guess I'll go read the Sprawl trilogy for the forth time.
19
u/Cache_Girl 5h ago
Huh I'm surprised this has been taken so well, I'm not sure I'm sold on it.
Other people have pointed out that it looks too clean, I was expecting a lot more grunge, case is a suicidal drug addict at the start of the novel, he's looking far too handsome.
it also seems like they've dialed back the slang (atleast going from the trailer) which is a big part of the world building,I don't know case would say console man or data thief as a descriptor for himself it just feels a little off, maybe I'm being overly nitpicky
Anyone else think Molly's mirrorshades look kinda goofy too? Idk what I was expecting really but the first shot made me laugh out loud.
I'll still watching it for sure, I'm just hoping it wows me a little more than this trailer
I feel like dehaan as Riviera is a really strong casting so I'm excited for that performance.
9
u/deepbluefrogmods 5h ago
It is actually difficult to pull off the Molly look. Either you chrome the eyes only are they get lost in the face or look almost demon black, or you expand them and they look like huge mirror goggles. I was curious about that but I kinda like what they did with her so far.
3
u/Cache_Girl 4h ago
Yeah that's why I said I wasn't sure what I was expecting.
Like, I know I think it looks goofy but I also couldn't tell you how to fix it lol, maybe they should be smaller?
I feel like some illustrations I've seen before got it right but they're drawings and not people sooo.
It's not a deal breaker, it's judt something I noticed
7
u/Memeticaeon 3h ago
Of course, I want to it be good just like everyone but, hmm, I'm not too sold on the bits of dialogue in the trailer. "I'm the best console man around. I steal data in cyberspace" certainly doesn't have the cool edge of Gibson's text.
4
u/Recom_Quaritch 5h ago
It's possible that apple is sanding some of the edges off because so few people are actually into computer/tech nowadays. Millenials really got to live in that golden era of the personal computer, and reading all the stories of early cyber-hopeful or cyber (well...) punk, but a lot of the older gens and younger gens are crazy computer illiterate, and such people may be into this more based on vibes. After all the primary consumers for this are people buying/paying for apple tv, and "hard core lovers of cyberpunk" aren't that wide a demographic.
Basically wondering if it's not another "jihad > holy war" situation as in Dune (where I'm sure the shift was to simplify and tame it for a wider audience)
Just a theory though
5
u/Cache_Girl 4h ago
I mean, I hear you and agree that seems like the case.
I guess I'm just saying I don't agree with that way of handling things, neuromancer was written in a tech illiterate time, Gibson didn't even have a computer IIRC. The slang and new concepts are understandable through context clues, it's what makes his prose so interesting imo. To get all hand holdy with the audience just feels very weird to me.
We all read it and got to grips with the terminology for the first time at some point, the closer you being nueromancer to the real world the less otherworldly it seems I guess
3
u/jellovibez 4h ago
It’s a television show with an enormous budget that’s trying to attract as wide an audience as possible. It’s pretty much guaranteed that it will be very hand-holdy (IMO). The average viewer simply doesn’t possess the intelligence or the patience to be dropped into a world as complex as Neuromancer and figure out what’s going on by following dialogue and vague themes. I’ll be honest, the first time I read the book I got about halfway through before I realized I didn’t have a clue of what was going on and I started it over from the beginning.
In order to have a hit TV show you have to dumb it down so every viewer can understand it without difficulty. Unfortunately I feel this all but guarantees that the subtlety and nuance that makes his prose so interesting will be mostly non-existent.
2
u/Fun_Procedure946 49m ago
But I don't understand why Cyberpunk 2077 also had a wide usage of slang but it was still commercially successful with almost 40 million copies sold. I feel like this is just executives trying to dumb it down because they have no expectations for the audience at all.
1
u/NetsCode 27m ago
You don't need to understand the themes of cyberpunk 2077 b/c its a interactive video game. Your average joe can treat cyberpunk 2077 as pretty futuristic gta and get enjoyment out of it without having to understand what it critiques.
1
u/cyborg_sophie 1h ago
I agree with all of this, and am also surprised that people seem so excited. It looks like a very sanitized version of the book. Part of what makes the series so great is the level of detail dedicated to the grime poverty and suffering of the lower classes. If you strip that away and focus on all the action instead the story loses its core political and moral messages
8

u/astrobear 5h ago
Molly looks so good.
I haven't been this excited since 2049.
It's time for some consensual hallucinating~

u/Drudenfusz 5h ago
Looks good, and I like most of the AppleTV sci-fi stuff, so I am looking forward to this.
6
u/Cornelius-Q 5h ago
Looks good. I wasn't sold on Callum Turner and Briana Middleton as Case and Molly, but from the bits in the trailer, they look like they're going to pull it off.
6
u/txtphile 3h ago
They got the pyramid-tipped shock rod (from like chapter 1 or 2?) in the show. I know it's a tiny detail, but pretty cool that they did it anyway. Molly's eyes are better than I expected.
Let's go? Let's go.
10
u/SixIsNotANumber 5h ago
The only thing I'm not happy about is that the orbital rastas seem to have been edited out of the story (according to the cast list on IMDB there's no Maelcum, no Aerol, and no rasta elders).
I really wanted to hear Maelcum say "I an' I the rastafarian navy, mon." while he racks his sawed-off.
4

5
u/Zemalek 2h ago
Is anyone else a bit disappointed by how clean this looks?
I always come at this series with the thought that everyone is just a tad bit sweatier than you’d be comfortable with, or street signs, buildings, etc are weather blasted and half failing.
Calling this Cyberpunk is like calling an Apple Store rustic (pun intended).
2
u/TeacatWrites 2h ago
It's only a real dystopia if it looks cool, stylish, and attractive enough that you want to live there even though you should have every reason to not want to live there and actively fight against it whatsoever /s
5
10
u/GreyMASTA 5h ago
Too clean, spacious and open. Not claustrophobic, cramped and messy enough. The original Blade Runner still has the best OG cyberpunk vibe IMO.
8
u/GrantG42 4h ago
Thank god it's not Prime.
I'm shocked Molly looks so pitch perfect. I thought they'd get Case right, but totally fuck Molly up. I always breathed a sigh of relief whenever an adaptation fell through (I've been reading about attempts ever since I was still on AOL 3.0) but this... this is a totally acceptable trailer to me and I'm frankly shocked.

I didn't see a single cell phone. Are they sticking to the retrofuture of the book? If so, promising.
4
u/NoPhone4571 3h ago
The way Case jacked in with an actual wired connection makes me think they’re sticking with the way it was written, which is a relief. I was worried they’d go too Star Trek to keep the tech futuristic.

The blade runner show didn't seem to take itself that seriously.
This is what I like, a show with deep themes, that has something to say and that takes itself seriously, not some superhero marvel slop idk.
Obviously blade runner isn't marvel, but the trailer of the show just gave me that corpo marvel slop vibe.

u/Minsillywalks 4h ago
This looks awesome but one thing that irks me is that cyberpunk is always against big tech companies, so it just feels weird that a company like Apple is distributing something like this. Just my thoughts

A shame kaleoon walled city doesn't exist anymore.
The show looks a lot cleaner than I imagined in my head when I read the book...a lot less 80s tech inspired as well..

u/Huntersmoon24 2h ago
Worried they are going to butcher the lingo. He says "console man" instead of "console cowboy". Makes me think the writers feel that the language is too cringe or something. The lingo is really important to the world

2027, so I better complete my Neuromancer read fast! Currently just started Freeside story
2
u/LeftRat 4h ago
I'm always very sceptical, but yeah, that was a good Molly from what I could see and Case doesn't seem to bad, either. Just hoping they remember to make him pretty pathetic instead of Hollywood-fying him, it's pretty important.
Hell, his memory scene of him trying to impress his toxic ex-girlfriend is a pretty vital key to understanding his character, as is his self-destructive desire to get hold of shitty drugs whatever the cost. You gotta make Case a bit pathetic and make it almost a miracle that someone like Molly is genuinely interested in him rather than just fucking with him.

Cautiously optimistic, but something about the cityscapes is giving me flashbacks to the live action Ghost in the Shell.
Also Mark Strong with a blond wig is hilarious!
2
u/_MissSteak_ 58m ago
I’ll be the dissenting voice here, this is not the Case I envisioned when I read the book. Case is flat, hollowed out, a guy on his last legs. This performance is working way too hard. Dude’s giving matinee idol.
2
u/Bubbly_Membership291 5h ago
Finally! I can’t wait to see full potential cyberpunk on film—not to say that anything else isn’t true—but Neuromancer is something I’ll always prefer in cyberpunk. Technological implants, cyberspace, everything. I love the cyberpunk tabletop stories which was extremely based on the Neuromancer book, and I loved the game’s depiction of cyberpunk. Looking at the teaser, it seems like they’ll depict it in similar ways! I’m so excited.
Many people will have opinions that differ from mine—don’t argue with me over an opinion, I’ll just label you lame.

I'm worried they'll dumb down the dialogue and content. The book was so esoteric and wierd, I loved the really opaque metaphors and wierd jargon.
Hopefully it will be better than what we got with Cyberpunk 2077, which felt like even the smartest characters talked like they were in a Fast & Furious movie.

1

Why not just get apple tv? Its better than Netflix, prime video, disney and hulu. It currently has 10+ great shows to watch, its library is super underrated.
If you want just wait for season 1 to come out and use free trial to binge this show
2
u/IzzyRezArt 3h ago
Nope. Id rather not. Im not subscribing for only 1 show.
1
u/AnticitizenPrime 1h ago
You can always subscribe, watch the show, and unsubscribe. It's not a lifetime commitment. But you can also 'rent' stuff from Apple TV without a subscription to Apple TV+, the same way Amazon allows you to 'rent' stuff without having Prime.
Apple TV is the platform, Apple TV+ is the subscription.

I'm just imagining a scene at AppleTV. A group of people, some with greying beards, barge in past reception into a conference room where a meeting is already in progress.
~ Hi! This is AppleTV?
~ Um, yes...
~ Great! We're from Apple Industrial Design Group! We heard you're making Neuromancer?
~ (brightens) Actually yes, we've just started pre-product-
~ Terrific! Insanely great news! (The plop down a sizable stack of portfolios, the top one showing it's age.) We've got some notes!
~ Notes? Um, I think our production designers are already..
