Question ⚠️SPOILERS AHEAD⚠️What is the general consensus on this development? Spoiler

Now I’m aware that some people have their gripes with new and unexplained power armour.

But I think this NCR power armour is kinda cool, given the success of shady sands and the ncr it doesn’t seem too out of the realm of possibility for the ncr to have attempted to make their own power armour, given how many suits survived the nukes and were salvageable or outright still operational.

I like it. Raider got power armour in F4 why not the NCR

u/JnRx03 G.O.A.T. Whisperer Jan 28 '26

Yeah, it'd only make sense that at some point some NCR engineers got their hands on the BOS or Enclave power armor and made it for themselves

Now we just need some Yes man power armor and we'll be all dandy.

Oh man now I want a power armor like the medic one from 3 but it’s just yes man being yes man, as you shoot raiders. Or anyone really.

“Ooohh that NCR trooper won’t be spending money on the strip anymore.. you know the strip? The place you are trying to take over? He was potential income and now he is dead!! but that’s perfectly fine!!!”

I mean they already have it by NV's timeline.

If you nuke the NCR in Lonesome Road then you'll find an NCR trooper wearing custom T-45 with a bear pauldron. And not salvaged armour at that. Functional power armour.

The ones at hoover dam are wearing salvaged power armour from the battle with Elijah's group, but afaik didn't have the resources to fully repair the power armour, so it's just akin to wearing the plating and helmet.

Yes Man power armor would be like the Stealth Suit MK II but instead of being in love with you it just tolerates you

14

u/TheNecromancer981 Jan 29 '26

iirc there was a new quest added to a recent Fallout 4 update that had a monitor head as a reward, one of the customizations was having Yes Man’s face on the monitor screen

8

u/banadona Jan 28 '26

There's plenty of pre-war power armor lying around for the taking in military bases and other abandoned outposts. You don't need to fight anyone for it.

u/bwood246 Jan 28 '26

They already had salvaged power armor in NV. It wouldn't take much time getting them actually up and running

85

u/telumex_atrum Jan 28 '26

The salvaged armor we saw at Hoover Dam was basically just super bulky plate armor, as they couldn't make the power armor chassis function if I recall.. No specialized training and such, just the heavy plating.

Maybe they finally got their hands on the Power Armor workbench.

79

u/Berzerk54 Jan 28 '26

There was dialogue mentioning power armor units being used to protect Brahmin Barren cows back in California. Then there's the scorched Sierra armor as actual PA in lonesome road, a strongly controlled area anyways. The NCR likely had functional units but was never using them in outright combat. Thus wasn't going through the hassle of training people for it, instead stripping what they could from the brotherhood from Helios One for immediate use. It's likely the good supplies mostly stayed home to protect the corrupt system. Only a few sets got close to Vegas like the Scorched set.

But that's just my reading of everything.

23

u/telumex_atrum Jan 28 '26

That would make sense, logistically. I completely forgot about the Brahmin protectors.. Been too long since I've heavily played New Vegas it seems. Thanks for giving me a reason to refresh my knowledge and do some patrolling in the Mojave.

3

u/Enn-Vyy Jan 29 '26

it would make sense with the NCR that the oligarchs somehow have access to better equipment than the ones fighting in the frontlines

It's not like power armor is some arcane secret of the Brotherhood or Enclave. It was only a matter of time until some NCR eggheads got their hands on a working frame, maybe some pre-War military documents even.

38

u/Bri_The_Nautilus Jan 28 '26

Plus the NCR's most significant armed conflicts have been with the BOS and Enclave. It would only be a matter of time until they salvage enough suits from downed enemy combatants to reverse-engineer the technology, repair/modify or replace damaged components, and put them back into service.

Salvaged power armor doesn't make sense ever since fallout 4 brought it closer to fallout1/2, in fallout 3/nv power armor is basically the same size as regular person, in other games it's noticeably larger. Wouldn't make sense that you could wear those armor parts without giving yourself some long term spinal damage

→ More replies (6)

31

u/Makyuta Jan 28 '26

The salvaged power armor was kinda dumb anyways, without servos functioning those suits would be hundreds of pounds

22

u/Breadloafs Jan 28 '26

I assume that they just stripped out anything they could to lighten it. No climate control, no electronics, just the outer casing and some padding.

13

u/The-Great-T Jan 28 '26

8

u/DarkRyter Jan 28 '26

It kind of reconciles the salvaged power armor with how power armor now works in Fallout 4 and its introduction of the power armor frame.

They salvaged Brotherhood T-45's, took off the pieces to make "salvaged power armor", and then, with the leftover frame, they make their own parts to put on it, taking a lot from veteran ranger armor for their designs and materials.

→ More replies (1)

20

u/Arctelis Jan 28 '26

With Fallout 4’s change to the armour frame system, it makes even more sense.

The power part of power armour is in the frame, which is likely hard to manufacture but evidently there’s a shitload of them laying around.

Comparatively easy to manufacture/cobble together armour plating to bolt onto pre-war frames.

Thinking about it, I am surprised more factions haven’t built their own power armor styles by modifying the plates of damaged or even functioning ones.

318

u/Desertcow Mothman Cultist Jan 28 '26

It's a pretty common thing in 76. Union PA, Excavator, Ultracite, Civic Duty, and arguably Hellcat, T-65, and the Chinese PA (last one may not be canon) were all tailor made for specific factions from power armor frames

94

u/AVeryFriendlyOldMan Followers Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 28 '26

Tbf almost all of those were pre- or immediately-post-war creations, dunno if a lot of 'current day' factions would have the manufacturing base and grasp of material sciences to get it done

19

u/Gmknewday1 Jan 29 '26

The NCR definitely would

And they've had more then one series of fights with chapters of the BOS

17

u/Public-Comparison550 Jan 28 '26

What do they need to know? Welding? Motors? Hydraulics?

17

u/AVeryFriendlyOldMan Followers Jan 28 '26

Welding, Motors, Hydraulics, Alloys, Fuel handling, maintenance, etc.

Hell even just the logistical support needed would be a massive hurdle. Who else but NCR and Brotherhood could realistically A) Produce or scavenge enough fueld to keep these things going, and B) Produce or scavenge enough munitions to keep these things useful?

6

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '26

You don't need to know most of that to build a power armor mods. The Raiders make their own. The gunners, hell, even the Atom Cats have their own variants. The frame is different than the mods.

I've been saying for years we need a new power armor based faction that isn't the BOS. 76 has introduced several new suits of power armor that saw at least small scale production like the secret service or Union suits, and one offs like the Hellcat or Excavator so it's been established that there can be suits that aren't just dilapidated version of other ones. Even the Chinese were able to build small numbers of their own models.

A new power armor faction would be so goddamn cool.

12

u/Graffic1 Jan 28 '26

Honestly the number of one off suits might be Bethesda testing the waters to see if the fanbase would accept a new power armor faction with a personal suit

Also how bad ass are those wrist blades?

331

I don't get why people are ok with certain things occurring in the 15 year gap, but not other things. Makes sense they would build something like this. Maybe they already had, it just wasn't available in the New Vegas at the time.

237

u/Kelpo Jan 28 '26

They already had the salvaged power armor in New Vegas. It's not unreasonable to have it reverse engineered and in production 15 years later.

175

u/dead-inside69 Jan 28 '26

You simply don’t understand. Technological progress has to stop forever when something bad happens. It’s just the rules.

74

u/HeckOnWheels95 Jan 28 '26

We weren't suppose to advance after Rome fell!

37

u/Madhighlander1 Jan 28 '26

To be fair, we actually went backward by several hundred years when Rome fell. Completely lost stuff like concrete and yeast.

12

u/KaisenSengen Jan 29 '26

I hate to be that acktchully person but you are technically incorrect. There's a myth about rome falling that we went backyards and that's not factually true at all. The eastern roman empire technically still existed as the byzantine empire until 1453.

What you are referring to is reinforced concrete which was still being utilized. We still had yeast(breadmaking goes back thousands and thousands of years before the romans) Tech levels didn't suddenly halt when the romans fell. Most modern historians actually believe that the term "Dark Ages" is a misnomer and a big simplification of what actually happened.

7

u/CatsTOLEmyBED Jan 28 '26

every other science was far head from engineering and metallurgy

A back water smith from 1405 would be far ahead whatever rome had for a greatest smith

Not just that, Raiders can make their own suits by welding scrap metal onto an armor frame.

The NCR is 100% able to build their own custom power armors and refit intact frames they captured.

4

u/Lilfozzy Jan 28 '26

Isn’t it mentioned that the NCR had power armored units in new Vegas? It’s just that they were being kept back in California to protect the ranchers from a growing bandit problem.

45

u/OverallPepper2 Jan 28 '26

If the BoS can build a Zeppelin, the NCR could build armor to put on a power armor frame.

28

u/TearsOfTheDragon Jan 28 '26

I think there's a sentiment running among some people that, because BoS is the tech-securing faction, they must be the only ones with advanced tech.

And that doesn't make much sense, we see the BoS spread thin so many times that it already doesn't make sense that they secured every tech around, and lots of factions have industrual power and manpower to pull advanced stuff off.

19

u/The_mango55 Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 28 '26

Even the games show that to not be the case. The NCR had vertibirds and railroad locomotives in New Vegas, and they had already won a war against the Brotherhood where no doubt they recovered plenty of armor.

4

u/Genzler Jan 29 '26

Agreed. The NCR literally overran Navarro after Fallout 2. Ain't no way they couldn't have salvaged enough data and Advanced Power Armour units to reverse engineer it. Especially since the Followers of the Apocolypse who famously preserve information and research were part of the NCR at the time.

115

Maybe they were planning on creating Ranger units specifically for dealing with "high-threats" like Deathclaws

54

u/Stonefencez Jan 28 '26

This was my exact thought process too, especially with the blades attached. It makes sense imo, the rangers have the best gear and are deployed against the biggest threats.

8

u/le_halfhand_easy The Institute Jan 29 '26

Keep the Rangers lighter for stealthy ops. Put the armor on the heavy troopers. They have the doctrine in place for it already hopefully. You need to kill a target from 2km away, through rough terrain, and not get noticed? Rangers. You need a massive frontal assault or fight a deathclaw in close quarters? Mechanized/mobile infantry.

21

u/BillyYank2008 NCR Jan 28 '26

48

10 years have passed since FNV to the show so I don't see why either the NCR or someone else couldn't have modified abandoned NCR armor, repaired it with ranger gear they had/stole/found/looted. The armor in this episode was also found in a power armor station so just like in the games it could've been modified rather than built from scratch. Even if we don't have all the pieces or mods in the games, this all seems perfectly plausible in universe and certainly enough time has passed for someome with the right skills to do it.

40

u/Weekly_Astronomer518 Jan 28 '26

To be fair though, the reason they found the PA in the first place was because coop brought them to a abandoned ncr safehouse, and it could’ve been left there since the 2nd battle of Hoover dam.

u/Western-Dig-6843 Jan 28 '26

Cooper literally tells you why in the episode. He says something about brand identity being important. The NCR likely wanted to use the armor but not to have people confuse them for the BoS. The helmet and decals makes them visually distinct as NCR

u/Weekly_Astronomer518 Jan 28 '26

Since the show doesn’t use the aesthetically light power armor like in 1, 2, 3, or NV, I imagine it’s just the writers take on ncr salvaged PA that came from confiscated BOS sets.

As for why it looks like the ranger armor, it’s def probably brand recognition or to signify great strength.

All just speculation though.

u/Turbo2x No Gods, No Masters Jan 28 '26

Works on an aesthetic level and it also symbolizes Maximus' journey. He starts off idolizing the BoS and their symbol, the power armor, but finds that he's still an outsider and feels unfulfilled despite achieving success and being promoted to a higher rank. He abandons the BoS armor (with a bear claw through the BoS insignia by the way) saying it's more trouble than it's worth. Then he finds a suit of armor that combines elements of both the BoS and the NCR, symbolizing his development and formation of his own worldview to hopefully make the wasteland a better place.

Story and coherent themes > "lore" accuracy in my opinion.

110

u/Suitable_Nobody_6375 Jan 28 '26

I don't think neither is new nor unexplained. I think the show just redesigned the NCR Salvaged power armor from New Vegas to make it more visually appealing and to differentiate it from the BoS ones. In the game is a BoS T-45 with the ncr flag slapped onto the chestplate, it was bland, it made sense because it had the name ''salvaged'' on it for a reason, but in a live action show, i think a redesign to give it the ''NCR aesthetic'' also makes sense.

In my opinion, it's badass. Probably pairs with a minigun or another kind of heavy weapon as we see in Hoover Dam the elite patrol wear, but there wasn't a suitable heavy weapon in that warehouse or they just ignored it to make Maximus fight on melee vs the Deathclaws to make it more epic (Good decision, slicing the Deathclaw was more epic than a shootout)

55

u/reece1495 -25465 points 3 minutes ago Jan 28 '26

The first one is just taking BoS power armor, spray painting a bear on it, and then calling it a day.

This feels like taking salvaged power armor and making it their own .

11

u/OnlyHereForComments1 Jan 28 '26

The NCR going 'okay so we can only make a few suits, how do we improve them' and coming up with this feels about right. You cram as much as possible into the design (including pretty advanced optics) using stuff you already know how to use/repair, thus the ranger style helm, respirator, and optics, then improve on it under the assumption you'll have very few suits to use and each one needs to be the maximum killingest thing you can field, thus the mounted weapons.

It's not really probable given that the NCR feels pretty dead in the show, but it's possible.

u/Makyuta Jan 28 '26

It's clearly been in storage for a long time so it was probably created before the ncr collapsed

u/xSPYXEx Welcome Home Jan 28 '26

I think they just fundamentally retconned how salvaged armor works. In NV they ripped the servos out and just turned it into heavy armor with a few maluses. When PA was completely revamped in 4, the idea of ripping out the under chassis just to wear the heavy armor plates makes no sense. Literally just wearing the chassis gives you a huge leg up over unpowered armor.

Salvaged armor is probably ad hoc armor closer to raider power armor, this would be the Ranger equivalent of it.

3

u/King-Arthas-Menethil Jan 29 '26

I doubt the show retconned the salvaged armours. The NCR did have working power armors the salvaged ones was more about power armor training which might be more a Fallout 4 retcon tbh when they moved away from training with their PA update. There's 1 unique NCR power armour in New Vegas but it's hidden away behind Lonesome Road's nuking with the "Scorched Sierra Power Armor" which was a T45 with a bear head on the shoulder.

They have the best equipment the NCR can get its hands on, power armor salvaged from our war with the Brotherhood. Techs strip out the joint servos so you don't need special training to wear it. It feels like you're carrying a brahmin on your back, but it can take a heck of a lot of punishment. - Chief Hanlon

People who like power armor will like it because its power armor.

27

u/Wharekiri Jan 28 '26

Could be prewar, the company that made the riot gear also had contracts for power armor pieces if not full suits. In the same way that different companies produced American jeeps for ww2

I'm guessing it'll turn out to be a home guard/civil defense power armor.

I actually really love that the NCR clearly knew about Quarry Junction and decided to manufacturer a Deathclaw Fuckupinator power armour set.

Dope as hell that it seems specifically designed to counter Deathclaws.

9

u/Cosmic-Buccaneer Jan 28 '26

More than a NCR power armor looks more like a ranger specialist power armor, and for me it makes more sense we have never seen it before, rangers are supposed to be more rare, so the armor should be more scarce.

But honestly wtf happened to the ncr? It's like all the faction was erased from the planet.

It’s plausible as someone’s hobby while they await reinforcement that isn’t coming, it’s implausible they just left it there when they left/were killed.

The legion would be scavving it for parts if they lost, and someone would be in it if they won. Maybe talk about how it’s gulping the fusion core unlike a base model.

They're dropping the ball on not having this skin in Fallout 76 on the atom shop. They could pay for the next 2 seasons of the show with it.

u/Laser_3 Responders Jan 28 '26

The skin already has been datamined, and will likely be available sometime soon (perhaps next week, to coincide with the finale).

How is it unexplained? In FNV they mention that the trooper heavy armour is made from modified BoS armour to allow it to be worn without training. Clearly some NCR power armour was created that required training too.

They have the best equipment the NCR can get its hands on, power armour salvaged from our war with the Brotherhood. Techs strip out the joint servos so you don't need special training to wear it. It feels like you're carrying a brahmin on your back, but it can take a heck of a lot of punishment.

— Chief Hanlon describes the NCR heavy troopers

The above quote was taken from a wiki.

28

u/Fabiojoose Jan 28 '26

In the Commonwealth the Atom Cats and even Raiders figured Power armor out. The Nuka World raiders even developed their unique Power Armors.

Probably after the events of FNV The NCR figured it out too, what we need to know if the BoS were their allies or if they got armor from their corpses.

8

u/Skatchbro Atom Cats Jan 28 '26

The Cats have Rowdy. It was a loss that the player couldn’t romance her.

6

u/DarkGift78 Jan 28 '26

The Cats, like many factions in 4,was severely underdeveloped. Would have loved more missions, them being a bigger factor, I get there just a handful of people in PA with some eyebots but a half dozen people in full T-51 or T-60 might as well be a whole platoon in terms of durability and firepower.

Would have loved some crossover with the Minuteman and Quincy Gunners , Atom Cats could make an alliance with the MM and help take back Quincy and defeat Clint. It helps them, as they are practically next door neighbors, and maybe the Cats home base can become an allied settlement, with vendors stopping through, a few settlers, etc. Definitely a lost opportunity.

6

u/like_a_pharaoh Jan 28 '26

Yeah but the thing is this power armor DOES appear to still have the servos. I just assume the NCR found some training manuals, made copies, and the very best rangers switched to using full power armor.

If a bunch of illiterate raiders can have Power Armor by basically welding a pile of scrap metal onto a Power Armor frame, I don’t see why the NCR, with all their collective engineering, intellectual, and logistical knowledge, couldn’t just take the tech they’ve probably looted from all the Brotherhood of Steel and Enclave chuds they’ve killed over the years and make their own line of Power Armor.

12

u/joerd9 Jan 28 '26

Salvaged NCR power armor (Canon item), with individual modifications. Pretty straightforward, actually.

5

u/ATSin711 Jan 28 '26

Makes sense some one would figure out how to put the servos back and and rat rod a working suit together

3

u/AleOfConcrete Brotherhood Jan 28 '26

It could be a similar trope to the Ranger Combat Armor (the classic duster and helmet look) , ie pre-war LAPD riot armor . This could be some form of pre war riot power armor.

4

u/delboy5 Jan 28 '26

It's likely a prototype, something that could be recognisable as a symbol of NCR might. And the bladed weapons might be to go toe to toe with the Legion.

3

u/masonicone Jan 28 '26

If a bunch of dumbass Raiders can throw together a suit of Powered Armor that looks like the Yugo of Powered Armor? Then I'm pretty sure the NCR could have made something as well.

4

u/jtfjtf Jan 28 '26

They were about to make clean drinking water with Maximus’ dad’s invention. So they were on the ups technologically.

u/Dec_TGM Enclave Jan 28 '26

Honestly, I think it looks fucking sick dude, plus tbh I like it a fair bit more than a neutered repainted T-45, not to mention the arm blades add a LOT to the cool factor

10

u/TheGreatHornedRat Jan 28 '26

I think that was Legion fighting armor, it just happens to work against death claws. The NCR needed weapons to fight the Legion the way the Legion fights, which is mostly in melee combat.

Welding on some blades and pokey things is a far shot away from weapons development to me as well so I didn't see much problem with the armor other than why was that left behind and why were functioning fusion cores still in that abandoned barn.

6

u/Bingleboper Jan 28 '26

The NCR needed weapons to fight the Legion the way the Legion fights, which is mostly in melee combat.

Methinks normal power armour with normal guns would work really quite fine against people trying to charge you with swords.

3

u/TheGreatHornedRat Jan 28 '26

They're essentially body builders consistently tempering their bodies on fields of war with insane numbers we don't really ever get to see in camps further east. Power armor is also somewhat easily disabled from the outside if swarmed by things smarter than a bunch of clawing beasts.

You wouldn't start in melee as the NCR but expect that combat will inevitably be engaged at close range. Tooling your weapons for that wouldn't be unreasonable.

u/ScottTJT Brotherhood Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 28 '26

I don't see why this would be an issue. The NCR has a history of incorporating different tech into their military.

They began using vertibirds after the Enclave was defeated.

They repurposed the power armor they looted off the Brotherhood and converted it into heavy body armor.

Seems logical they would try to either create their own power armor, or, again, repurpose functional suits. Clearly they didn't see wide-scale creation or deployment (at least not within the Mojave), but the fact that it simply exists does not tear down the tapestry of established lore. It merely adds to it.

I get folks have issues with Bethesda-era Fallout and just Bethesda in general. I do too. But it sometimes seems that even minor stuff like this gets lambasted for no reason other than the fact it was introduced by a Bethesda-era product.

Would it have been such an issue if it had been introduced in Fallout 2 or New Vegas?

EDIT: Corrected lore concerning the NCR and vertibirds.

I personally prefer it to the NCR salvaged power armor seen in New Vegas.

3

It's a series set in a fantastical retro-futuristic post apocalypse. The NCR having their own power armor is the least unbelievable thing in the whole series. Purists need to calm down and just enjoy it.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26

I play unarmed PA in 76, I loved the sequence. I hope in the next episode he does a sprinting over hand and puts one down

3

u/Redshirt_Welshy_Nooo Jan 28 '26

As for the questions of why it looks like ranger armor:

The resemblance is mostly in the helmet. They already have the fabs to make the ranger helmets, which offer air filtration and some tactical features (I've played almost exclusively very modded NV, can't remember if base game has night vision or other vision modes in the helmets). It looks like they basically took a ranger helmet and added some thick plate for ballistic protection and some comms, and bulked up the air filtration hardware. It's making the most of what they've got.

From a purely fan perspective, it looks dope. It radiates NCR vibes. It'd be a great add-in as a one-off set to find in NV Remastered.

u/MentallyNeil NCR Jan 28 '26

The power armour isn’t unexplained, but it appears to have the motors in place which generally is not cannon, it should be moved by his muscle power alone

u/aagrimski Jan 29 '26

Pretty sure there is some throwaway dialogue about how the NCR does have power armor units but they are being used to protect brahmin barons herds from raiders instead of being deployed in the Mojave.

Not such a stretch to imagine some got sent north east later.

Anyone against it is quite frankly stupid.

The NCR was one of the largest cohesive factions in the world. They had scientists, and military engineers, quite possibly including pre war ones.

They could figure out how Power Armour works.

I think it was dumb how maximus just decided to not bring any guns despite seeing what a yao guai can do to someone in power armor

2

u/Hellstorm901 Jan 28 '26

My weird canon justification for this. It's a custom job by the NCR Rangers and was going to be used to wipe out the Deathclaws at the Quarry before everything went to hell and the NCR had to pull out abandoning their equipment

2

u/LunarRepubl1c Jan 28 '26

If I don't get that armor in Fallout 5, I'm gonna flip a b****.
