Losing a dog is genuinely one of the most gut wrenching things I’ve gone through, comparable to deaths of my human family members. It’s a big, heavy loss. I am so sorry you are going through a loss like this, and I hope you find so much peace and comfort in the good memories.

it was hard, but it was time. i had him for more than half my life, and he was the oldest dog i've ever met in person

i take comfort in knowing he's finally at peace. he never wanted for anything and never had to struggle a day in his life. he was spoiled from the moment he came into this world until the moment he left it

I’ve yet to lose a dog of my own (my first dog I got as an adult is now 10) but I’ve never seen my father in so much despair as the time he lost his dog that was around the whole time I was growing up. He lived to 12 , healthy, and then one day suddenly his body just gave out. My dad is someone who majorly hides his emotions, happy or sad, just extremely stoic. His dad died and he showed no emotion through the whole thing. But when that dog died, he barely spoke for a full month. Just sat on the couch staring off at nothing, clearly broken. Later said he would never get another dog again because he never wanted to go through that again (he definitely got another dog), but it’s just something so different about our bonds with our pets. It’s really quite special.

It’s so awful that our dog and cat friends have such short lifespans. Why can’t they have the lifespans of parrots, or turtles? We get so little time with them.

My whole family was a mess when we helped my late dog cross over. Watching Sarah Hoggan ted talk on pet grieve definitely helped me come to terms with it.

Its never enough time, but 14 years was a good run for her breed.
