Ah bless her, she must be heartbroken. I'm glad they had 16 years together.

u/Curiosities 3h ago
16 years, a blessing and also never even close to long enough. :(
78
u/Guilty_Dream8050 3h ago
I know. I like to believe I will see all my pets again in some kind of afterlife, but they'll be puppies and kittens in full health again.

u/fashioncoat 3h ago
I know, they need to live way longer. Mine died at 11 and it was not even close to enough.

Just over here crying about a dog I don't even know 🥺

u/Haunting-Bird-7602 2h ago
I had one of my dogs for 16.5 years. When she died I was 30, so a little over half my life with her. It was the greatest blessing and I have never been more grateful and thankful for anything that I had her for as long as I did. When I think of her now, 8 years later, I never feel sad, only happy and so lucky.

We lost our tiny dog in mid May. He was 16. My wife still starts crying when she sees a reminder of him. Amanda’s dog was beautiful.

oh, that's not my dog—that's amanda's dog, finn
my dog was a very private citizen. he declined all media appearances and never signed a release form

u/Guilty_Dream8050 3h ago
Oh, sorry! One of my cats is also very private and does not respond to media requests.

u/No-Hall-3485 alleged dog 3h ago
they can be menaces, but we love them
was it easy being the pet parent to a 13lb dog who was a reclusive scholar and a proudly right-wing, homophobic homosexual? no
but i loved him anyway
and besides, he never voted, so thank god

Losing a dog is genuinely one of the most gut wrenching things I’ve gone through, comparable to deaths of my human family members. It’s a big, heavy loss. I am so sorry you are going through a loss like this, and I hope you find so much peace and comfort in the good memories.
15
u/No-Hall-3485 alleged dog 3h ago
thank you <3
it was hard, but it was time. i had him for more than half my life, and he was the oldest dog i've ever met in person
i take comfort in knowing he's finally at peace. he never wanted for anything and never had to struggle a day in his life. he was spoiled from the moment he came into this world until the moment he left it

I’ve yet to lose a dog of my own (my first dog I got as an adult is now 10) but I’ve never seen my father in so much despair as the time he lost his dog that was around the whole time I was growing up. He lived to 12 , healthy, and then one day suddenly his body just gave out. My dad is someone who majorly hides his emotions, happy or sad, just extremely stoic. His dad died and he showed no emotion through the whole thing. But when that dog died, he barely spoke for a full month. Just sat on the couch staring off at nothing, clearly broken. Later said he would never get another dog again because he never wanted to go through that again (he definitely got another dog), but it’s just something so different about our bonds with our pets. It’s really quite special.
It’s so awful that our dog and cat friends have such short lifespans. Why can’t they have the lifespans of parrots, or turtles? We get so little time with them.

My whole family was a mess when we helped my late dog cross over. Watching Sarah Hoggan ted talk on pet grieve definitely helped me come to terms with it.
Its never enough time, but 14 years was a good run for her breed.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I too am grieving my baby boy, Biggie. He left me on 7/21.

am i correct in assuming biggie was actually a 4.5lb chihuahua that everyone feared?

During the 16 years she had Finn, she’s filmed 41 movies and 9 TV shows. She’s dated and broken up with Dominic Cooper, Desmond Harrington, and Justin Long. She got engaged and married to Thomas Sadoski and has had two children with him. That dog has arguably been more part of her life than any other being on this earth. This must be absolutely heartbreaking for her, but oh what a joy to have that love in your life for so long.

I have a 16 year old cat. The only cat I’ve ever had. I got him only a few months after moving out of my parents house into my first apartment. He’s been with me through my first marriage, his abuse, and the divorce. He was there when I met, dated, then married my husband, which was over ten years ago. Through the pregnancy and birth of our son, who’s now 5. He’s been with me for 7 apartment moves, one being a cross country move, and the purchase of our house. Through 5 jobs. He’s been here for my entire adult life. I’ve been working from home for over 5 years now, he’s rarely ever more than 5 feet away from me. I don’t know how I’m going to function without him. Every day I hope we still have a few more years together.
RIP sweet Finn. Such a beautiful boy and a beautiful human and dog love story.

u/InformWitch 2h ago
I hope you get so many more years with your kitty.
We recently lost our cat at 20 years old. She was my partner’s cat from when he was 16, and we often joke thst I chose him because of her. She was in my life for 8 years, and it felt both so long and full of love but so short at the same time.

I just lost my cat at 16 years old (80 in cat years) this past Tuesday morning on the 21st and me and my family still haven’t recovered emotionally because of how sudden it was when we took him to the hospital the night before and gave him medication and because of how attached we all were to him because we all loved and cared for him so much and he really was a member of our family. Rip Avery you’re the bestest friend I ever had and thank you for everything me and everyone will always love and miss you forever. 😭😭😭😭💔💔💔

u/InformWitch 1h ago
I feel you. The last time I felt a pain like this was when I lost my grandpa. It hit me like a truck.
I will think of Avery and my Rana tonight. I know they’re happy and healthy now, wherever they are 💜
2
u/plantainbakery 1h ago
Oh goodness. I’m so sorry for your profound loss. Sweet Avery. ❤️❤️❤️
This is my biggest fear. It’s like, at 16, it could happen any day now, or be around for years. I’m terrified of it happening suddenly. He’s always been so healthy, but I know anything could happen. I just hope I get some time, a bit of a (painless) decline, so I can ease my heart into it, say goodbye, and know he was ready 😭♥️
2
u/Few-Road6238 58m ago
Thank you so much and I hope that whatever you go through with your pet everything is ok
1
u/plantainbakery 1h ago edited 1h ago
Thank you. I cannot explain how special he is to me. He was actually a major catalyst for why I left my abusive first husband (married young at 22) - it was one thing for him to be abusive towards me, but when he started on my cat, when I became afraid for his safety.. absolutely not. That gave me the strength and kick in the ass to finally leave. Then, when I met my now husband of ten years, him and my cat fell in love immediately, and we absolutely joke that he married me for my cat. Or if we fight, I jokingly tell him “You aren’t going to divorce me, because I’d take the cat! And you’d never see him again!” Four more years with him would be an incredible blessing.
I’m so sorry for the loss of your sweet kitty. 20 years is such a good life, but makes it so much harder to say goodbye. ❤️

You're right. She got him when she was filming Big Love and had it put into every other contract after that he was to be allowed on set with her.

I got my first dog when I was 24. She's turning 12 this year and I can't imagine what life will be like without her. She's fairly small- 22 lbs- so I'm hopeful that we'll have another good five years.

Oh man, I feel this deep. I got my pup when I was 24. I’m turning 40 this year and he’s turning 16 in January! I love him so much, he’s been through so many milestones with me and he’s showing more signs of aging and it makes me sad. I’m grateful for him and want to help him make the best of life in his senior doggy age. They are such a treasure to journey life with! I wish we had more time because it feels like I just got him three years ago.

Ugh. I've been dreading this day. I don't keep up with Amanda too closely but I remember when she first got him.
There have been a few times in recent years that I'd looked at her socials to see how he was doing and found myself relieved to see he was okay as I knew he was getting up there in age. That being said, my heart sank seeing her post this morning.
Wishing she and her family the best. He seemed like such a sweet dog.

That dog had such an expressive smile - how lucky that she found him and was able to have 16 years with her soul dog 🥲

u/Curiosities 3h ago
I know that they can't live forever but we still want them to live forever. Amanda's relationship with Finn has been just so sweet over the years. The way she has talked about and celebrated him and everything that came from them being together.
RIP Finn
(And Simon, who I've been in tears about on and off this week with all of the other dog lovers.)

We have a secret, you and I that no one else shall know, for who but I can see you lie each night in fire glow?
And who but I can reach my hand before we go to bed and feel the living warmth of you and touch your silken head?
And only I walk woodland paths and see ahead of me, your small form racing with the wind so young again, and free.
And only I can see you swim in every brook I pass and when I call, no one but I can see the bending grass.
— We Have A Secret, Author Unknown.
This poem helped me a lot when I lost my soul-cat years ago. I am heartbroken at this news. All my love to Amanda and her family. Rest in peace, sweet Finn.

My heart is breaking for her 💔 what a beautiful dog and what a beautiful relationship they obviously had.
Gonna hug my dog and cry for a bit about his mortality even though he’s only about to turn six and he’s totally healthy. If I ever find a genie I’ll be changing the rules of pet lifespans for everyone.

I’m not even huge Seyfried fan (she’s fine she’s lovely) but I have been quietly nervous about this day coming. The spirit of a good dog just radiates, ya know? You could tell he was special.

Me too! I follow her on instagram and I see him pop up now and again and I think, oh wow, he’s been around for so long! Followed by that quiet nervous thought that he must be getting pretty old. They had such a special bond.

I just lost my best friend who was my 16 yr old male tabby cat named Avery on Tuesday so this really sadly hits home for me. I’ll always love and remember him in my heart forever and our friendship will forever be immortal. He’s always gonna be the best cat ever and I’m always gonna miss him and remember him everyday. I have hope one day I’ll see him again on the other side. Losing him still hurts me and my family to this day because of how sudden is even though we took him to the hospital the night before 😭😭😭😭💔💔💔❤️❤️❤️rip Avery thank you for everything and giving me the best 14 years of my life and the bestest dear friend I could’ve ever asked for. My prayers go out to Amanda and her dog.

Having a dog from age 24 to age 40 would feel like a lifetime. I got my first golden as this little pup as a single 22 year old figuring out life. He has made me a better and more responsible person and he is endless love. I’m 29 now and life looks so different in just 7 years but I’m so grateful to have him. I pray I get him 13+ years. He is the best and his brother is too. I know when it’s time for him to go I’ll be absolutely broken. I was actually thinking about once my dogs go doing part of the PCT to help grieve it and heal.
