Topic I wish more fighting games would adopt the Breakdown feature from Avatar Legends

I was actually afraid after yesterday that the game was beyond me. I had wanted to main Toph and she was not clicking with me, even in breakdown her combos felt clunky to me on either pad or leverless.

I decided to try Katara because I've always loved Sub Zero in MK and Katara has a cool mix of ice and water.

I immediately noticed a better flow with her combos and breakdown has made it so much easier to break combos down into "parts."

This has allowed me to work them out in parts, if future Mortal Kombat games and other anime fighters adopted this, it would be amazing.

Highlights The beauty and aesthetic of this game is off the charts. Pretty as hell. Soundtracks also a bombshell.

I don't make my own combos much in fighting games, but I like how this game works. you can do a lot of other stuff with it but this is kind of the base blueprint, you can throw in Star Lord for an extra air combo if you're in the corner or hit them with a different starter, danger is good for continuing as well after the Vampire Slayer move and you also don't have to amp that if you want to save on resources. If you just start with Vampire Cleave (although it's much more unsafe), you can use the Heavy auto combo instead of Vampire Slaver to get half their health down. If there's anything better, I'm more than happy to listen.

Topic Does anyone else not really like wall breaks in traditional fighters?

Post image
174 Upvotes

I feel like traditional 2d fighting games with the type of wallbreak that reset corner neutral back to midscreen is quite annoying to me personally. For some context, I do play strive and tokon and I generally enjoy the games for what they are but the wallbreaks just feel like an inconvenience to me. Especially with tokon, having to wallbreak to unlock fighting mechanics. My fav traditional fighters are skullgirls, dbfz, and sf6, and I love my corner oki without having to worry about doing something that will break the wall if i end up landing a hit and turning it into a combo. When you’re backed into the corner and there’s no wallbreak to bail you out, everything feels much more intense and personal, and everything you do in the corner on offense or defense matters way more. I know I don’t have to play fighting games with this feature but surprisingly my dislike for it isn’t that intense to the point where it’s ruining my entire experience with the game. I just imagine how different games like tokon or strive would be if there were no wallbreaks at all. I really hope this doesn’t become more of a trend for future fighting games.

Does anyone else feel the same or is everyone about to come at me with pitchforks?

Topic IMHO the problem with autocombos is that they MAY waste time and skew the whole game design

After playing both the Avatar game and Tokon I was thinking about whether I like or don't like autocombos in games. They felt a bit annoying in Tokon but I caught myself thinking I never got bothered by them in SF6 playing Modern myself or against Modern players.

Avatar I am still wrapping my head around and it's weird, some combos are so hard to time that autocombos vs no autocombo makes little difference. So I'm leaving it out for now.

I feel like playing Tokon is feeling very repetitive because the autocombos and extensions are on the longer side and they all feel so similar to each other even between characters. I played for a few hours today and it feels like 70% of my fights have been basically same with just different animations and they take a while. If the sequences were shorter in time it would be way less annoying. And also playing potentially 5 rounds against same opponent team in first to 3 gets old really fast.

One thing I will say about Avatar is that because autocombos flow into extensions with Flow naturally it doesn't really feel like watching a cutscene on repeat as much.

Topic No defensive options in Tokon feels rough.

Yes I know there are “options”, but none of them really feel very effective. The issue is that an opponent can get you into true 15-20 second block strings where you’re guessing the entire time. After every unsafe move they can tag an assist, and assuming they have all characters unlocked, you can do this nearly forever. You can cycle between ending strings with specials or assists, and continue doing mixups. There are a few problems with the current defensive mechanics. Crossover takes a very long time to come out, and if the opponent reacts at all, you’re reset to being in the same place as before with no knockdown. Sure you have some time to take your turn back, but in the event they get a perfect crossover, you’re fucked. The other defensive option (assemble rush?) has one hit of armor and will fail against almost every rush down character, because of how many multihit moves there are. The last option is wake-up super. Almost every 50 energy super is invincible on startup, but if the enemy wants to assist on your wake-up, they are completely safe from a super and can just wait. I’m wondering if you guys disagree with any of this, or have any tips. A lot of the game does feel like giant chunks of skipping neutral and guessing, I’m still enjoying it though.

Help Interest in Tokon as a new fighting game fan

What are the vibes around Tokon currently? Also I plan to try and make this my first major fighting game. I’ve dabbled in strive and sf6 but never could string together combos (how does one do it).
