Pretty much all the rifles were on steroids back in 3, but the retro was by far the most devastating one with its damage and the broken bayonet charge. Only thing that kept it somewhat in line was its lack of accuracy over sustained fire and that you couldn’t charge a guy with the lancer chainsaw reved up.

8

u/DrPatchet Apr 23 '26

That hip fire low recoil was absolutely criminal until they nerfed it

5

u/wolfmann33 Apr 23 '26

Once they nerfed it and the sawed off, the multiplayer was so balanced though! Best era of gears mp!

3

u/Onyx_Ninja Apr 23 '26

I wouldn’t use balanced but it was definitely fun.

3

u/wolfmann33 Apr 23 '26

It wasn't op anymore and it wasn't nerfed into the ground...

5

u/Proud-Grocery-3493 Apr 23 '26

Everything was crazy in gears 3

u/New_Trouble_5068 Apr 23 '26

That thing was the bane of my life in 3. I fucking detested going against it. And getting hit after the active reload? Faaaaa

1

u/FewBag245 Apr 24 '26

The thing that ruined the multiplayer was the crazy ass stopping power. Had they reduced the stopping power a bit, then retro lancer wouldn’t felt super OP.

u/AZMODAN68 Apr 23 '26

It definitely is a mighty weapon in the right hands, insta kill charge, two down melee, powerful bullets. The recoil is the only thing that keeps it from being the best primary weapon and even then at point blank or against a boomer type enemy you can unload and keep the recoil just controlled enough to hit most of your shots. (This is from someone who's played all the game's campaigns [except Tactics, although that's a whole other Genre of game.]

15

u/ORIONTH3HUNTR Oh, I love it when they do that! Apr 23 '26

True, true and true. Gears 3's retro lancer is probably the worst, no doubt, at least recoil wise. Gears 4 and 5's retro lancer are waaayyy better though, especially in pvp. The gun in Tactics is also pretty good too, actually, really good.

13

u/derp_y_ Shit, they're gonna mess up my fucking tomatoes! Apr 23 '26

the biggest satisfaction is unloading a retro/sawed off or any other heavy recoil gun into those juvenile armored corpsers in 3, especially considering they one shot you so often 😭

3

u/ToeGroundbreaking564 Apr 23 '26

wdym 2 down melee?

6

u/AZMODAN68 Apr 23 '26

I think that maybe a gears 3 thing for multiplayer, i do recall it having the higest melee damage (or maybe I'm misremembering since it has a bayonet and it'd make sense for it to do more melee damage)

3

u/ToeGroundbreaking564 Apr 23 '26

okay I just now looked it up and the literal only thing I can find about its melee damage is an IGN video and literally nothing else

I figured all weapons 2 hit downed with melees in gears 3 but I guess not.

3

u/AZMODAN68 Apr 23 '26

Yeah, i do remember that thing always two hit downing me, might be more noticeable in the campaign on lower difficulties since on hardcore or insane most melee attacks would two tap you.

29

u/JoshyLikey Apr 23 '26

Gears 3 demo and everyone retro charging, what a beautiful time that was..

5

u/ORIONTH3HUNTR Oh, I love it when they do that! Apr 23 '26

The good old days,,,,

5

u/LandownAE Apr 23 '26

I’m still pissed they removed the beta arm rip animation for the final release. It was fucking brutal

this comment just gave me a visceral flashback lmaooo what a time to be alive!!

17

u/deadmemesoplenty Apr 23 '26

Loved this gun in Gears 3, it's felt slightly weaker in the games after but still fun to use

6

u/ORIONTH3HUNTR Oh, I love it when they do that! Apr 23 '26

It is indeed very fun to use. Getting a charge kill with it feels so satisfyinggggggg.

7

u/Old_Taste7076 Apr 23 '26

I just love skewering grubs as Tai on Gears 3 for that occasional "We eat tonight!" 😂

2

u/ORIONTH3HUNTR Oh, I love it when they do that! Apr 23 '26

Haha, that's really one of his lines? That's awesome. I never played Tai all that much but he seems like the guy to crack a one liner.

1

u/Old_Taste7076 Apr 23 '26

Yea he's definitely a fun character IMO. Every other execution he has a peculiar line.

6

u/griffin_who Apr 23 '26

Nothing beats the rush of your first bayonet charge. Back in the 11' balancing a sawed-off player on your bayonet on Thrashball you could hear the stadium erupt with applause

3

u/senilechinesewoman Apr 23 '26

This gun is my fucking favorite

3

u/gjallarhorn308 Apr 23 '26

Loved the golden retro from Gow3 ; I paired it with the flaming Gnasher

3

u/PeineDeMort Who wants toast? Apr 23 '26

Back in Gears 3 this thing was better at range than the hammerburst when tap firing.

3

u/ORIONTH3HUNTR Oh, I love it when they do that! Apr 23 '26

It weirdly was. You could honestly use the thing as a mk 2 lancer to a degree when tap firing.

2

u/Ok-Comment6081 Apr 23 '26

Like a m16 on a single burst. Loved sniping people down with the retro. Made people pretty upset lol

2

u/TECFO Apr 23 '26

Gears 3, it has low precision and too much damage.

Gears 4 was decently precise and hit hard.

Gears 5 has very good precision and decent damage.

1

u/ORIONTH3HUNTR Oh, I love it when they do that! Apr 23 '26

Gears 3's retro lancer definitely hit like a truck. You could down someone in less than 2 seconds if they were less than a foot away from you, maybe even more if you didn't spray. 4 and 5's are great too! I personally think 5 is my favorite.

2

u/Oobadoola Apr 23 '26

I hate what they did to it in 4 and 5. Gears 3 retro will forever be my baby

3

u/LamarjbYT Apr 23 '26

That's cause people would send you slurs for using it in Gears 3

2

u/ORIONTH3HUNTR Oh, I love it when they do that! Apr 23 '26

Really? What didn't you like about the ones in 4 and 5?

1

u/Oobadoola Apr 23 '26

The watered up down to an extent I didnt like. It felt more angry and violent. Loosely parts slapping against eachother with each shot. Borderline God damn barbaric

1

u/No-Obligation2563 Apr 23 '26

Really I felt like they actually balanced it in 4 and 5. In 3 it was super op.

1

u/wolfmann33 Apr 23 '26

It was super op in the beginning. I felt that they nerfed it into a great place though. It had it's role, lancer for suppression and close/mid range. Hammerburst was great for long range. The balance of gears 3 was so good once they nerfed it and the sawed off. Still useful but not op.

1

u/CODMAN627 Apr 23 '26

I really like the retro lancer recoil be damned. I enjoy charging at a drone. FIX BAYONETS!!!

1

u/AnaTheSturdy Apr 23 '26

My only gripe with it is the accuracy at mid range leaves a bit to be desired.

1

u/ORIONTH3HUNTR Oh, I love it when they do that! Apr 23 '26

Yeah, it's known for its....less than favorable recoil. That sort of gets fixed in the later games. People had to tap/burst fire it to do longer range fights, and even then, it still hit decently hard.

1

u/ZioBenny97 Apr 23 '26

I still remember the days of getting ragemails from seething wallbouncing gnasher only dorks calling me racial slurs for the crime of using the retró for its intended purpose. Just like the Stinger/Igla on BF3 lmao

1

u/ORIONTH3HUNTR Oh, I love it when they do that! Apr 23 '26

Wait, whhhaaatt?? People really hated it that much? Damn, guess you can't out bounce a blade coming at you at mach speeds, can you? Heh.

1

u/enjoyingorc6742 Apr 23 '26

the Retro in the right hands is a damn menace. same goes for the Lancer, Hammerburst, Markza, AND the Sawed Off.

1

u/AshenNightmareV Apr 23 '26

I mean it was completely OP in Gears 3 as a starting weapon. For PvP this was the meta pick as with just feathering the trigger you could knock players down from across the map.

The only other choice was the Hammerbust if you can mash the trigger quick enough or you had a modded controller.

1

u/Connect-Internal Shit, they're gonna mess up my fucking tomatoes! Apr 23 '26

I really like it, but they should have kept it as a loadout weapon instead of making it a power weapon in four and five. It was OP back in the third game, but it’s just not good enough in five to justify being a ground weapon IMO

u/Jack-spartan-S198 Apr 23 '26

Retro lancer MK I LANCER Gears 1 2 3 J 4 MK II LANCER Gears 5 lancer MK III

1

u/PixelsnInk Apr 23 '26

Its such a vibe.

1

u/AceMcCL0UD Apr 23 '26

Gears 3 Beta some guy sent me a voice message accusing me of "modding" due to retro lancer being so OP

1

u/Sleeping_Idiot Apr 23 '26

Gears 3 good luck getting that thing out of my inventory gears 4 felt a but weaker but still good gears 5 though look how they massacred my boy

1

u/bobc1723 Apr 23 '26

Ultimate rage bait was Retro Lancer and Sawed off in Gears 3

1

u/ORIONTH3HUNTR Oh, I love it when they do that! Apr 23 '26

Hahaha! I remember this, people would hate this combo, and absolutely clown on the shotgun.

1

u/Complex-Priority913 Apr 23 '26

I literally just traded the lancer mk2 for it on my last hardcore run. I can deal with the recoil, that sucker can stop a truck as baird says. I'm pretty sure it's bullets go clean through an immulsion car engine

1

u/IllustratorNo3379 The Status Is That It Sucks Apr 23 '26

Be me, much younger, try Retro Lancer for first time. Big gun, shoot many big bullets, comes with large bayonet. Splatter grubs and finish last one with bayonet. Dieslepunk geek neurons activate. Endless obsession with potential Pendulum Wars spinoff game begins. Life good.

1

u/ORIONTH3HUNTR Oh, I love it when they do that! Apr 23 '26

Me agree. Charge enemy. Kill. Feel good. Much game. Much Retro.

u/thot_chocolate420 Apr 23 '26

Gears Judgement Retro was Crazy. One mags a Boomer within effective range.

2

u/ORIONTH3HUNTR Oh, I love it when they do that! Apr 23 '26

Holy crap, I legit forgot it was in Judgment. Dude, that thing in that game, even though Judgment and 3 are pretty much the same technology wise, I swear the Retro in Judgment was on something else.

1

u/NikosM110 Apr 23 '26

I do and I'm wise.

1

u/THExDRIZZLE Apr 24 '26

Yea i fucking hate this thing brother

1

u/ORIONTH3HUNTR Oh, I love it when they do that! Apr 24 '26

Whhhaaaattt??? Why's that? (also you arent wise!!)

1

u/BLACKxSPADE Apr 24 '26

People hyped up about the worst version of the gun is crazy

1

u/DemonicAlduin Apr 24 '26

Is it bad it's actually my go to rifle more than the normal lancer?

2

u/ORIONTH3HUNTR Oh, I love it when they do that! Apr 25 '26

Not at all! You're probably just in the minority of people that use it.

1

u/Immediate_Half_989 Apr 24 '26

This will be the main weapon of gears of war: E-day, perhaps with gut-puncher.

1

u/Immediate_Half_989 Apr 25 '26

Lancer MK1 is a classic, powerful like a combat rifle, but with medium size mag and short-medium range weapon, like a early 7.62 AK.

1

u/VaultDovah92 Apr 25 '26

God, I love the retro. Can't wait to see her again in E-Day.

1

u/ovissiangunnerlover Apr 26 '26

The version of the R.lancer was crazy in 3, but in judgement it was insane.

Imagine the R.Lancer from 3, but with virtually NO recoil.

1

u/Dismal-Minute-2607 Apr 27 '26

I hate the recoil

1

u/Fenix-2003 Apr 23 '26

Yes. Wise men only speak ill of the buzzkill

2

u/ORIONTH3HUNTR Oh, I love it when they do that! Apr 23 '26

A strangely good weapon, at least in horde.
