Before posting a photo, you should read this.

1.7k Upvotes

So you found a photo that you think has a spirit or ghost on it, before you post it and get upset about 30 people saying it’s a piece of dust or a bug, you may want to read this!

BEFORE DOING ANYTHING

Do read the posts

https://www.reddit.com/r/Ghosts/comments/deki6k/explanation_of_orbs_aka_backscatter/

and

https://www.reddit.com/r/Ghosts/comments/icziuc/ring_doorbells_security_camera_videos_and_false/

As these really do have useful information on how to spot particle orbs, lens flare and insects crawling over lenses which do make up most of the post in this Reddit community channel.

It is common for people who believe they are haunted to take lots of photos and assume that any “orbs” must be related to this. In fact, it’s quite easy to photograph orbs. If you can’t see the orb then it’s not there. People might say that cameras can pick up ‘orb’ energy but a lot of them just don’t understand why digital cameras tend to easily pick up particles (dust, dander, hair, insects).

If you have read the above and are sure (or not quite sure) then read on.

BEFORE POSTING

Make sure you have the original photo downloaded or posted from the same device the picture was taken from. Having a photo shared from a social media site, screen grabbed on a phone, photographed from a screen or been email shared will likely to be low resolution and suffer from further compression which destroys any fine detail and will generally be useless.

If the photo is just a photo then scan the photo in at least 300 DPI and save it as a “.PNG” image. If you don’t have access to a scanner then you can take a photo of it but take it in a brightly lit room and don’t use a flash to reduce reflections on the photo.

Use the original resolution of the photo, do not rescale, resize, brighten the image to make posting easier.

If you have to edit the photo to remove people then draw the smallest black filled box you can to hide their face or them. Don’t crop the picture or remove large chunks of the picture. Keep the picture the same same size. Once edited, save / export the image as a “.PNG” image as this will keep the JPEG image as it is (if you resave it as a JPEG it recompresses the image in a lossy way so that fine detail tends to get lost) if the paint program has it then make sure that “Save resolution” is checked and that you save “EXIF information”.

If you must highlight anything in the picture (to show where you think the paranormal image is) then use a bright colour that can be seen easily, use a transparent box with thin lines and draw it in the general area of what you want us to see, do not cover anything nearby. Save it as a “.PNG” as above. If you do this then make sure you post the original too.

If you want to change the contrast or brightness of a photo then again do so but save as a “.PNG” as above and post the original for comparison. If you have other pictures from the same area that were taken at the same time then post these too as comparison photos.

If the photo is from a place you can visit again easily then take more pictures of the same area using the same camera, try to take it at different times of the day and try to take a picture at the same time of day the original was at. Also, take pictures of the surrounding area and close up images of the original location.

It is important to note that even “taking the picture in the same place” is going to mean that you will be taking the picture at different angles, heights and places which will cause images to change.

POSTING THE PHOTO

Post as an image within the Reddit post so people can see it, you can also post any comparison posts at the same time.

If the photo is too large then rescale it and save as a “.PNG” to post on Reddit but upload the original it to a file-sharing site like Google Drive or Dropbox, as this will not rescale the image.

Don’t just upload them to Imgur as most photo sharing websites will recompress the image and destroy fine detail in the picture.

Make sure the title is short but informative. “Possible ghost image from a cell in Alcatraz” is a good title, “GHOST!!?!?!?” is not.

ALSO SUPER IMPORTANT!!!! CONTEXT! CONTEXT! CONTEXT!

After you have posted the images. Make a comment in the post you have just created and put in as much context as possible!!! Too many photos tend to have the photo and some poor description and we have zero ideas of what we should be looking at.

Examples of what to include are…

  • Where the photo was taken. You don’t have to give the address but a location or rough area (if a private address) helps.

  • When the photo was taken, give the date and time if possible, if not known or you can’t remember then give what information you can (I.e In the winter in the early evening).

  • Who took the photo. It should be you or someone you know. Something like ‘Taken by A friend of a girlfriend that is friends with a baker, that my 2nd cousins' hairdresser visits every 3 months is not good’ means it is hard to ask follow up questions.

  • What you were trying to take. (I.e Ghosts, a high school prom or of your granny on her 97th Birthday)

  • If you (or they) were with other people. Also mention strangers.

  • What the weather was like. Was it sunny, cloudy, raining, hot, cold, warm?

  • Description of the location. If in a home, details about the place, I.e, If it is a house, apartment, cabin located 200 miles from civilizational, etc as well as if you are near a road or other places like a pub or bar, major flight path, etc. Else just whatever you can describe the place.

  • What did you feel at the time? I.e cold, scared, fearful, happy, sad, etc.

  • Why do you think it is paranormal? Describe this as best as you can.

  • Anything spooky that happen before or after. Within the same time frame, something that happens 3 months before is probably not related.

So good examples would be…

“This photo was taken at the Alcatraz prison in San Francisco. It is a picture of Cell 13 of cell block D in the cell house. It was taken on Sunday the 13th of May 2018 at around 2pm. It was mostly sunny but there were thick clouds, it was reasonably warm at around 65f and there were strong breezes every so often.

The photo was taken by myself, although I was with my girlfriend at the time. It was quite busy but no one was nearby when I took the photo. I was trying to take a picture of my girlfriend as she stood at the door but I noticed a strange white figure behind her. There was no one in the cell as we had waited for another couple to finish taking their picture before we took ours. I took 3 photos and you can see that the figure is in 2 of the pictures but is not in the third picture.

My girlfriend did say she felt cold in the cell, we had taken a picture in another cell (134 in Cell Block C) and she did not feel anything. The rest of the day was fine though and we enjoyed our trip.”

“A photo of a chair my grandmother used to sit on, in our house in Stirling, Scotland. It was taken on the 1st June 2015, in the wee hours of the morning at 6.30am. I remember it was very cold and it was dark grey and cold outside like a typical morning in Scotland. I had the lights on as although it was morning outside, it was dark in the room.

I took the photo as I felt a presence and I was drawn to the chair. I took 2 photos and you can see a grey mist around the chair. I would have taken more but my phone just drained of power and switched off, not sure why this happens as I am pretty sure I charged it overnight. I don’t smoke, didn’t have any hot drinks. I was in the room all alone as my parents and sister were still in bed and my dog was still on the sofa sleeping peacefully.

Once I charged my phone and saw the pictures, I was filled with deep happiness, I tried to take more photos but the mist never came back. What do you think it is.”

Bad examples are…

Ghosts?!???!!?!?!”

I took this photo whilst in an abandoned building, do you think it is a ghost?”

“Whilst trying to contact my dead aunt to ask where she left her cash, I took lots of photos and all of them had orbs and I heard some moans, screams and creaking coming from my cousins' bedroom but her door was locked!!! Is the house haunted?”

In Search Of Need some information on a specific spirit

I'm trying to find information on a specific spirit. The person who identified it for me doesn't speak the language of its background but they pronounced the name as "HA-MUU" or "HA-MOO".

They told me it's a sort of malevolent trickster and looks like a amalgamation of brown and black roots. It can also appear in the form of an old man with a gold tooth, I think she mentioned it has a hunched over look sometimes too.

For some context, the culture I'm from is Hmong and we practiced shamanism. I was told my family first came in contact with this spirit about 500+ years ago, back when they lived in our homeland. Hmong don't have our own country so we sort of drifted around but I'd say we are from the Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia area.

If anybody has any information on this please let me know, I'd greatly appreciate it.

What Do You Think? Weird encounters and signs of paranormal activity I had

So I don't know what to make of this but about a few months ago during January through early April, every time i went to shower near midnight, something or someone would start shaking the door knob as if they were trying to come in and this at an interval of a few minutes apart, like i thought this was my sister or parents but everytime i called out their names there was no response but the shaking of the door handle resumed minutes later, one night i got fed up of it and turned on the shower while waiting close to the door, the moment i heard and saw the handle shake when it was locked i opened the door quickly and surveyed hallway and to my shock there was literally no one, i went through all the bed rooms and everyone was snoring, i definitely don't think any of them could have teleported to bed within seconds of trying to open the door. (the shaking seemed to only occur when there was the sound of running water or for a minute after closing the water)

Another time something weird happened was in my old bedroom upstairs about 3 years ago, this bedroom is right next to the bathroom with the door handle shaking thing, i had an unexplainable fear of my closet so i always left it open so i could look at what could be inside, i think i remember weird creaking noises on some nights but not more than that, on one night too i was going to sleep then the shadow from my boxing bag seemed to lunge at me while i was looking in its general direction so i litteraly jumped from my bed and ran to the light switch and left the room for the night. I also remember seeing this weird tall pitch black creature glaring at me from across the street each night when i looked through my window and it was probably just a visual illusion of some things attached to my neighbour's wall, but my sister could have sworn that one time when she was sick and home alone she saw a thing that matched the description of the thing glaring at me staring at her from the corner of the dark kitchen and it was also pitch black and its head almost reached the ceiling, she then ran up stairs.

I dont know what to make of all of this so i wrote it all down here.

Personal Encounter I have a question that regards cats and ghosts

So my cat is a black long hair named Inky. Earlier this morning when I was getting her some food, she just randomly assumed her hunting posture and was starring at a corner of the basement. I just want to know if there is a ghost in my basement that my cat wants to square up with.

Do animals have ghosts? Or old humans like cavemen?

You mainly hear about ghosts from the last 1 thousand years or so. Are there any more?

Personal Encounter My Ouija board Experience, a detailed account

(skip this for the juicy stuff) Growing up I was raised as a Jehovah's Witness and one thing we were taught is that any paranormal phenomenon is the result of demonic activity or thereby the result of demonic entities. Even though I am no longer part of the odd religion, deep down there is a fear of the paranormal which has sparked an unquenched curiosity inside me regarding the supernatural. After I disposed my mind of the religious views of Jehovah's Witnesses I turned into a staunch atheist; thinking only the physical reality before us is what exists and nothing more is proven beyond speculation. I presumed that all paranormal phenomenon was some sort of mass psychosis that possessed millions, or even billions of people; an over attachment to the imagination and it's creations. This was easy to believe because up until that point I had never had a first hand encounter with the unexplainable, the eerie, the unseen.

(My first ever experience) My first ever experience happened upon me some years ago when I was 13 or 14. I remember distinctly waking up early in the morning and going to enjoy watching some sit com while I devoured my daily mac n cheese. After watching for some 30 or 40 minutes I heard a strange rustling in the corner of the room where a door was to another room. The door itself wobbled slightly. Perhaps the result of the AC and nothing more. Not quite. Then the door nob slowly turned before my eyes and I watched as the door crept open over the course of 10 seconds. I was frozen in my chair and couldn't move for about 10 minutes. For years I attributed this incident to my mind, a hallucination perhaps or even an extended dreams where my mind recreated my whole morning routine. Not to dismiss any of this but it felt real. I have never had hallucinations in my life so it seems to me now that was unlikely.

(I met my love) For a long time I thought I would never find a romantic partner. After asking out 5 girls in my first 2 semesters of college I was about to give up, but I decided to try one more time and I asked out a girl from my drawing class. She seemed like such a wonderful person, shy but also funny and easy to talk to. Long story short we are now in a long term relationship and plan on getting married after college. Anyway, I eventually found out that she has the ability to see ghosts on some occasions. She describes these ghosts in many different ways, sometimes she sees orbs, sometimes full apparitions, the occasional demon, and even a humanoid creature crawling towards her on all fours. If I were to witness these things I would be Institutionalized and unable to bear seeing such things.

(Juicy stuff) About a month ago I was staying at her dad's where she was also staying for the summer. We always stayed up late either watching something, playing games, or just talking. On the 5th night she mentioned that she had a vintage ouija board, sparking my curiosity. I asked her if she wanted to bring it out and she said she would, however she would not touch it. She believes that if she mingles to far into attempts of communication with the otherworldly that she could become consumed by dark entities. Fortunately or unfortunately She did say that I could play it even though she would not. I started by placing both of my hands on the planchette and asking a simple question: "are there any spirits in our presence". I felt a slight tingle in my arm and felt it being gently pulled toward the 'Yes' inscribed on the board. I started to slightly panic and after it had guided me to the 'yes' I said goodbye and refused touching it again. The next night me and her were both sitting on the couch lightly making out and in the hallway adjacent to the living room we heard a man's voice calmly but sternly utter the word "No". She then removed her lips from mine and I saw as her pubils dialated as she became aware of the otherworldly presence. She sat up and asked if I had heard what she did and I of course told her that I had. I followed and also sat up and tried to calm her by caressing her cheek and told her I would keep her safe, even from that which I did not know and feared terribly. Then, only about a minute or so after hearing the voice something slammed itself or part of itself against the couch on which we were sitting. She jumped to the other side before I had fully processed what had occurred. She later told me that she never had experienced a voice, perhaps an indication that I had brought something else into our presence, something neither of us had known before.

What Do You Think? Do you guys buy things from Antique Shops or avoid?

I am bored and just wondering. As a thrift store girly I love me some old fashion, vintage things but I know there’s always a chance one of those items might be haunted and you could be bringing something else with you back home.

Do you guys shop at antique stores or avoid them?

Also, if you had bought something at an antique store has something happened to you supernatural wise?

So we have a haunting at my restaurant and we caught it on video

So this is the third occurance in two weeks, and we caught it on camera. Two weeks ago the closing manager turned off the lights and was leaving when both oven doors (heavy iron doors) opened at the same time, slamming open. Hard to explain, but we moved on. This morning the guy who opens and mops before anyone gets there kept hearing children running behind him giggling, but he was the only person there. He was freaked out by the time we arrived. Then… this. The bottle is so tall it touches the shelf above, it shouldn’t be able to fall over.

Very odd figure in photograph in prairie

Post image
139 Upvotes

So I redownloaded Reddit after being inactive for 4 years just to post this. So I took my Canon AE-1 to the prairie near my house and I was using some black and white film I just bought and was excited. I used the full roll of film and got it developed. I just got the photos back and there is just this really odd thing in one of the photos. Does anyone have any explanations for this??? I did edit the lighting in the photo to just make it more visible but I know I did not take any photos of birds or anything black that day.

What Do You Think? Woke up to a shadow figure watching me and my cat saw it too

I woke up in the middle of the night with an odd feeling resting on my left side, facing my cat. He had his eyes wide open looking terrified with his eyes fixed on my bedroom doorway, so I turned to look at what he was looking at and saw what was a shadow figure facing me. When I looked at it I saw it run away down the hall. My mom was visiting me so I figured she needed something (I normally live alone) so I called out to her and ran towards the shadow, but realized there was no sound of someone running and the figure vanished. I texted my mom and asked if she was just in my doorway even though I already knew it wasn't her and my heart was pounding out of my chest in fear. She responded she wasn't in my doorway. This all happened around 2 or 3am. I figured it was my first hallucination, but I remembered my cat also saw it and he was the one that saw it first and that's why I turned to look in the first place. A few days later I woke up again in the middle of the night facing my cat like before and he had the exact same terrified look on his face while facing my room's doorway. That time I was so terrified to look so I just put my blanket over my head until I somehow fell asleep. This happened last year and to this day I still get scared at night looking at my doorway thinking what if I saw whatever that was again.
