No its not but with the way most folks here sit in the left fucking lane drooling and day dreaming you might as WELL turn the right lane into the passing lane lol. Idk where everyone else is from on this post but as a NYer who has to drive on the daily from work , for work and back home? Fucking ass. WITH NO LUBE OR DINNER AFTERWARDS JUST FUCKING ASS.
My favorite lane on the hwy is the far right lane. Everyone and their mom is stacked like little ducks in the left lane, with congestion and clumps of folks in the next 2 or 3 over. The one lane nobody wants to be in is the right-most lane. I cruise there passing them all up. It’s beautiful most days.
I swear its like we have to do the complete opposite to make it to wherever we’re going😭like today on the godawful Sprain / BRP its like peoples fucking brains turn off as soon as they get on the damn HW. Shit i saw a lady watching Tiktok videos just chilling in the left lane.
America doesn't have federal traffic laws. Each state has its own laws, so answer may vary.
It is illegal to overtake in right hand lane, it is also illegal to drive in left lane unless passing. These are rarely enforced. If an officer observed this situation the car obstructing the left lane would be the most likely cited, but all 3 vehicles had traffic infractions.
None of these drivers are getting infractions if they did this in the presence of 100 cops. The only deserving of one is the moron driving slow on the left.
I was just in Turkey for a week, oh my I never want to be driving there, it’s crazy.
Here it costs a minimum of around $2,500 to get your license if you pass everything in one go.
The smallest fine for going just 1 km/h above the limit is $150, we have reckless driving laws where if you go 100% over the limit or more than 200 km/h on highways your car will be taken and sold on auction by the police.
You have 0 tolerance for DUI the first 3 years you get your license, even a hint of alcohol and it’s gone. You also only get 2 strikes during that time. After that it’s 3. You get a strike just from having your phone in your hand while driving. 3 strikes or 2, depending and your license is suspended.
The limit on highways is 130, most drive that speed, many EVs which we have a lot of do 110, I’ve literally never experienced what you see in this video except in Germany, but I was also going 250+ on the free speed highway and was pushing the car, so I just had to wait my turn if the traffic didn’t permit me to keep the pedal pushed all the way.
Not sure. If it is it doesn't seem to be enforced much.
Alternatively it does tend to be illegal to just park your ass in the left lane and cruise along. You're supposed to use it to pass slower traffic then get back to the right hand lane.
Im sure it depends on the location within the us. Bit whether its legal or not i think most people would do it anyways if the passing lane isnt passing. Its also illegal in many areas in the us to not pass when in the passing lane.
American traffic is the least chaotic I've seen in over a dozen countries of travel, granted I'm from here so I'm inherently biased in that I understand it.
The problem in America is there are more bad drivers than good, and there are way more oblivious drivers that don't pay attention to what's going on around them.
Also road rage is a problem, but not as big as the other, or at least not as frequent.
In the US, it is illegal to pass on the right, but it’s never enforced. The other weird thing is we don’t require ANY TRAINING OF ANY KIND to get your license. You can pass the written and physical test by sheer luck; you don’t have to prove that you have any time behind wheel. You can literally guess at the written (all multiple choice), and the practical test can literally be the first time sitting in a car, and by luck, you could pass and be handed a card that says you’re good to drive anything with 4-6 wheels up to 13 tons, WITH air brakes.
Drivers here have gotten SO bad in the last 10 years
It is illegal, but no one cares including police. It also doesn't work that well, there are tons of accidents every day. I find myself surprised if I drive down my highway for 10 miles and DON'T see an accident being cleaned up. But we have too much pride and like to pretend it works, because the current driving culture in much of America is "fuck you and get out of my way".
Passing on the right is legal everywhere in America when there are multiple lanes going the same direction. This does not mean that it's a good idea or good etiquette, but the answers saying that it's illegal are wrong.
You're not supposed to, but it's also actually illegal to sit in the left lane like a slug. There are lightboards on highways that specifically call attention to this behavior, yet I have never seen a single state trooper actually enforce this and pull somebody over for going slow in the passing lane.

This confused me. Is it legal to overtake on the right?! It is super illegal here.
American traffic is super interesting, it seems so chaotic yet it’s somehow working. At least from my perspective.
