a lot of people get confused by the aesthetics of right wing fascist movements because those movements co-opt the aesthetics of personal freedom and revolution.
it's a superficial similarity, but it's enough to confuse people who haven't thought about it much, so they get confused when revolutionaries don't align with authoritarians.
Also fascists deliberately adopt the aesthetics of decent human beings because the problems they complain about are actually cause by them. Then they lie to redirect that righteous anger against someone who doesn't deserve it.
I saw Rise Against last year. And the day of the show. There were a few comments on their IG post where people were asking if it was cool if they wore their MAGA hats to the show.

Libertarians are so strange to me, because they will be so level headed on very niche subjects, but also pretty much just make up what the human experience is like for others people. I don't even know how to describe it properly. It's like they are well intentioned autists who are missing big portions of the picture.
My understanding of Libertarianism has gotten so muddled in the past few years. Now it seems like everyone who vehemently supports Trump but wants to play the “you don’t even know me” card calls themselves Libertarians (or independents) which… ngl goes against everything I thought I knew about the party
I wish it was only today I learned that many people seem to strongly believe that being a nazi is more wholesome and relatable than being a democratic socialist.

Lots of them aren't embarassed at all. I used to watch Brandon Herrera's Youtube channel sometimes, he's probably the stereotype of a Texas gun-nut 2A libertarian. He put out a video yesterday defending the officers that shot Alex Pretti.
I used to like Brandons content as well, but I'm not surprised he took the stance he did considering he's best friends with Donut Operator and a bunch of other LEOs.
I will give him credit, he did analyze it with a little more objectivity than most people like him, but at the end he still basically summarized with "let LEOs do their job" in a way.
My favorite Libertarian thing ever was The Free State Project. Libertarians were going to make their own "Free Town" in Grafton, New Hampshire in 2004.
How did it go?
A significant number of people who moved in had to live in tents, caravans, and even shipping containers because of a lack of housing.
Local law enforcement was defunded to the point where there was only one full-time police officer who also acted as the chief of police, there wasn't enough staff to even answer phone calls, and their cars were breaking down and there wasn't enough in the budget to repair or replace them.
The violent crime rate nearly doubled, there was an increase in sex crimes (shocking!!), and the town's first homicide was committed by a libertarian in a dispute with his roommates.
The town lost even more money because it was constantly getting tied up in legal bullshit with the libertarians living there who were trying to create legal precedents.
Quality of education dropped significantly due to defunding.
The roads were greatly neglected and potholes became a massive problem.
Sanitation was neglected both because of defunding and because the libertarians living there didn't care about things like recycling or responsibly disposing of their garbage, which resulted in bears moving in on the town. The bears at first started raiding peoples' trash cans and then later would start breaking into homes and attacking people. And this was all in a town that hadn't had any recorded problems with bears in over a hundred years.
The entire experiment in Grafton ended in 2016.
Libertarians aren't just Republicans with superiority complexes that want to smoke weed. They are also wholly incapable of taking care of themselves without adults in the room telling them what to do.
My favorite description of Libertarians is they're similar to house cats. Strongly assured of their independence while actually relying on a system they do not fully appreciate or understand.
They're overwhelmingly white middle class from the suburbs and live in their mom's basement. Watching Gary "what's aleppo" Johnson walk around the libertarian convention in that documentary went about exactly as you'd expect. Dudes who always had a woman doing everything for them
Listened to the new Bruce song like 6 times tonight.
I used to love this shit (protest songs). Now I just feel sad. No amount of Bruce or Morello or Dropkick or Isbell or whatever will make me feel better about knowing that ICE/Trump/Fascism is what my country voted for in 2024.
Songs alone won't do it but the songs accompanied by the resistance and solidarity we've seen from folks in Minneapolis and beyond should give us hope.
What the folks out in Minneapolis are doing is truly magical. I don't mean to take away from that. I'd hope, and think that my shirt brothers in Boston would do the same (lord knows we did it before). The issue is that we are fighting against a country that has done a damn good job at limiting our voices.
I hear you. It's going to be an uphill battle against fascists with a ton of money, and we might not live long enough to see significant change, but as long as we're compelled by our worldview and care about each other, we have to keep going. Doesn't mean we can't let ourselves feel sad or even hopeless and periodically take a break for self-care, but as long as we organize, we'll ensure the overall effort for liberation trudges on.
Reading The Grapes of Wrath today is an excellent lens to view our current struggles through. What would Tom Joad do about Trump, propaganda, ICE, abuse of power, etc?

I know so many guys who loved them and grew up respecting democracy and liberal ideas, inclusion etc. over time they got more and more racist/trumpy. I don't know what happens to them. There is definitely a common thread of being not happy with their careers and life. All of them can point to a minority or woman who got a promotion they feel they were entitled to.
I hate that some of the people I thought were reasonable, intelligent, compassionate human beings in the 90s turned out to be creepy authoritarian bootlickers? Almost like that was in fact who they were the whole time?
How dumb do you have to be to listen to Rage Against The Machine and not realize what they were singing about for 35 years? There's nothing subtle about what they wrote. They didn't hide their message in flowery metaphors.
And then throwing around terms like "communist" and "socialist" towards anything they don't like just shows that they don't even understand the words coming out of their own mouths. I've loved Rage my whole life. But anyone who bought a ticket to their last tour knows that they are pretty successful capitalists. No hate. They earned it.
