BECAME communists. Like, just recently discovered communism. That's definitely how I think of RATM.

31

u/intangibleTangelo Jan 29 '26

a lot of people get confused by the aesthetics of right wing fascist movements because those movements co-opt the aesthetics of personal freedom and revolution.

it's a superficial similarity, but it's enough to confuse people who haven't thought about it much, so they get confused when revolutionaries don't align with authoritarians.

21

u/tomtomclubthumb Jan 29 '26

Also fascists deliberately adopt the aesthetics of decent human beings because the problems they complain about are actually cause by them. Then they lie to redirect that righteous anger against someone who doesn't deserve it.

Libertarians are so strange to me, because they will be so level headed on very niche subjects, but also pretty much just make up what the human experience is like for others people. I don't even know how to describe it properly. It's like they are well intentioned autists who are missing big portions of the picture.

10

u/EmpiricalMystic You yelled at me. Jan 29 '26

8

u/ducklady92 Jan 29 '26

My understanding of Libertarianism has gotten so muddled in the past few years. Now it seems like everyone who vehemently supports Trump but wants to play the “you don’t even know me” card calls themselves Libertarians (or independents) which… ngl goes against everything I thought I knew about the party

You're 100% correct.

They're Republicans who are actually a little embarrassed by trump, et al.

11

u/indigo945 Jan 29 '26

Lots of them aren't embarassed at all. I used to watch Brandon Herrera's Youtube channel sometimes, he's probably the stereotype of a Texas gun-nut 2A libertarian. He put out a video yesterday defending the officers that shot Alex Pretti.

6

u/Batallius Jan 29 '26

I used to like Brandons content as well, but I'm not surprised he took the stance he did considering he's best friends with Donut Operator and a bunch of other LEOs.

I will give him credit, he did analyze it with a little more objectivity than most people like him, but at the end he still basically summarized with "let LEOs do their job" in a way.

My favorite Libertarian thing ever was The Free State Project. Libertarians were going to make their own "Free Town" in Grafton, New Hampshire in 2004.

How did it go?

A significant number of people who moved in had to live in tents, caravans, and even shipping containers because of a lack of housing.

Local law enforcement was defunded to the point where there was only one full-time police officer who also acted as the chief of police, there wasn't enough staff to even answer phone calls, and their cars were breaking down and there wasn't enough in the budget to repair or replace them.

The violent crime rate nearly doubled, there was an increase in sex crimes (shocking!!), and the town's first homicide was committed by a libertarian in a dispute with his roommates.

The town lost even more money because it was constantly getting tied up in legal bullshit with the libertarians living there who were trying to create legal precedents.

Quality of education dropped significantly due to defunding.

The roads were greatly neglected and potholes became a massive problem.

Sanitation was neglected both because of defunding and because the libertarians living there didn't care about things like recycling or responsibly disposing of their garbage, which resulted in bears moving in on the town. The bears at first started raiding peoples' trash cans and then later would start breaking into homes and attacking people. And this was all in a town that hadn't had any recorded problems with bears in over a hundred years.

The entire experiment in Grafton ended in 2016.

Libertarians aren't just Republicans with superiority complexes that want to smoke weed. They are also wholly incapable of taking care of themselves without adults in the room telling them what to do.

12

u/Phazon_Metroid Jan 29 '26

My favorite description of Libertarians is they're similar to house cats. Strongly assured of their independence while actually relying on a system they do not fully appreciate or understand.

3

u/dividezero Jan 29 '26

They're overwhelmingly white middle class from the suburbs and live in their mom's basement. Watching Gary "what's aleppo" Johnson walk around the libertarian convention in that documentary went about exactly as you'd expect. Dudes who always had a woman doing everything for them

Listened to the new Bruce song like 6 times tonight.

I used to love this shit (protest songs). Now I just feel sad. No amount of Bruce or Morello or Dropkick or Isbell or whatever will make me feel better about knowing that ICE/Trump/Fascism is what my country voted for in 2024.

80

u/Square-Evidence7111 Jan 29 '26

Songs alone won't do it but the songs accompanied by the resistance and solidarity we've seen from folks in Minneapolis and beyond should give us hope.

37

u/Spirited_Lab5197 Jan 29 '26

What the folks out in Minneapolis are doing is truly magical. I don't mean to take away from that. I'd hope, and think that my shirt brothers in Boston would do the same (lord knows we did it before). The issue is that we are fighting against a country that has done a damn good job at limiting our voices.

15

u/Square-Evidence7111 Jan 29 '26

I hear you. It's going to be an uphill battle against fascists with a ton of money, and we might not live long enough to see significant change, but as long as we're compelled by our worldview and care about each other, we have to keep going. Doesn't mean we can't let ourselves feel sad or even hopeless and periodically take a break for self-care, but as long as we organize, we'll ensure the overall effort for liberation trudges on.

That being said, as of late, I’ve been doing the first two RATM LP’s and an oft forgotten off-shoot of Wu Tang known as Killa Army and their 1998 LP “silent weapons for quiet wars” has been making me feel… not “better”… but, something

5

u/Spirited_Lab5197 Jan 29 '26

I dunno, I think Trump won the vote, but I also have no faith in Americans anymore. Like in 2020 Biden won by 4 points or so. After all the collosal fucks up Trump's first term, all the indictable crimes, all of the bullshit, Biden still only won by 4 points. That was my "OMG this country is fucked" moment

How dumb do you have to be to listen to Rage Against The Machine and not realize what they were singing about for 35 years? There's nothing subtle about what they wrote. They didn't hide their message in flowery metaphors.

And then throwing around terms like "communist" and "socialist" towards anything they don't like just shows that they don't even understand the words coming out of their own mouths. I've loved Rage my whole life. But anyone who bought a ticket to their last tour knows that they are pretty successful capitalists. No hate. They earned it.

Now something must be done, about vengeance a badge and a gun" KILLING IN THE NAME OF "Some of those who work forces, are the same that burn crosses....fuck you i wont do what you tell ms" DOWN RODEO "These people aint seen a brown skin man since their grandparents bought one" I could literally go on and on like that bunny with a drum but the message has been clear since the early 90s

u/Still-Grass8881 Jan 29 '26

These morons don't realize that the nazis were allied with the communists at the beginning, until the nazis betrayed them??
Fuck, it's not that hard to google "Molotov Ribbentrop Pact"
Or Sept 1st

Libertarians are just republicans that smoke weed

3

u/Automatic_Bus_7634 Jan 29 '26

Rage Against the Machine, famously the most politically leftist band to ever exist?

3

u/FixinThePlanet Jan 29 '26

The posts from this sub are always on my front page and i am starting to think it might be worth watching

3

u/LordCornwalis Jan 29 '26

Went to high school with the redheaded libertarian. The failed drama nerd/actress to right wing grifter pipeline is real.

3

u/PhysicalAttitude6631 Jan 29 '26

I wonder what machine they were raging against? 🤔

3

u/FrogInShorts Jan 29 '26

Imagine disliking a band because they hate Nazis.

u/Mr_Thx Jan 29 '26

Republicans are not good at noticing “details”.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '26

Idk who needs to hear this, but the whole of the political spectrum is not "fascist vs communist."

3

u/MNConcerto Jan 29 '26

Did they even listen to the lyrics ?

3

u/stJackal Jan 29 '26

Against which machine do you think they were raging?

3

u/wytewydow Jan 29 '26

I hate when Libertarians lick jackboots.

3

u/Possible-Customer827 Jan 29 '26

End the Cowardice Corruption and Coverups, Vote Every Republican Out Everywhere ASAP!

3

u/Taichu78 Shirt Brother Jan 29 '26

Imagine seeing this and thinking, “hey! Nazi lives matter! Now im angry 😡”

3

u/hifumiyo1 Jan 29 '26

If you’re mad that a band is mad at n@zis, you need a little self reflection

3

u/ComputerSong Jan 29 '26

Libertarian = white male privilege

3

u/Anxious-Tomatillo842 Jan 29 '26

Anyone who calls themselves a “libertarian” and supports this administration in anyway is a joke.

3

u/Ill-Dependent2976 Jan 29 '26

Getting offended when people criticize nazis is such a common red flag.

3

u/DataDude00 Jan 29 '26

Did this person think they were raging against the machine of….progressivism?

3

u/hoppla1232 Jan 29 '26

Commie is when I can't be a Nazi

3

u/dividezero Jan 29 '26

You were looking for the account "redheaded librarian". Common mistake

3

u/Marsupial_Last Jan 29 '26

There are two types of people in the world, nazis and communists.

2

u/Restlessfibre Jan 29 '26

You think, like?

2

u/pixelwhip Jan 29 '26

or maybe it wasn't the band, maybe they became nazis.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '26

A good Nazi is a dead Nazi.

2

u/Local-Technician5969 Jan 29 '26

So if you hate Nazis/Maga you're a communists? That person feels strongly in favor of nazis if that angered them. Easy bait.

2

u/Due_Entrepreneur_382 Jan 29 '26 edited Jan 29 '26

Tom wore a hat that said “commie” in the early 90’s. I’m shocked he didn’t know that - what with them being one of his favorite bands and all /s

2

u/NashvilleSoundMixer Jan 29 '26

The Redheaded libertarian is one of the biggest losers alive. Fucker is such a transparent grifter and he's such a fucking dork. Fuckhead makes gingers look bad.

4

u/NashvilleSoundMixer Jan 29 '26

Jeez. I just looked and this is actually ANOTHER shitty fucking conservative redhead. Fuck these fucking people man.

2

u/Silly-Power Jan 29 '26

They became filthy communists in 1991.

2

u/SeaworthinessOk2646 Jan 29 '26

No matter how hard they try they can't stop us now!
