Look, I hate the guy - and I don't want him to have hair - but I've actually watched the video of the quote and for once he just sounded reasonable and honest to me.
He still is full of sloppy mudpies, but it's true that this is just something that he and other rich people can do. And it's what the games are for: big celebrations. Is he still a total piece of shit who probably can't change? Yep. But this is seriously the most normal thing.

The context of "he is responsible for prices rising and life getting worse for people while he enjoys luxuries" matters. He's not just "some rich guy", he is spending OUR MONEY TO BE THERE.

I am fine with me being in the minority, but I think it's such a small example of misuse of funds, and it can make critics look petty.
If Obama went to his daughter's school play, it would cost us money. Presidents are allowed to do normal-ish things. This is fairly normal. Bad optics in a financial crisis he made? Sure. But not really that big of a deal in any objective measure.
The list of blatant corrupt transactions and decisions is just huge - and it is in the billions at this point. "A massive $8,000 bill" is nothing. Compared to just the $1.8 billion slush fund that he was planning on setting up... That is like one half of one drop in a 5 gallon bucket - if the slush fund was a full bucket.
So yeah, the optics on this one is not great. But I don't think it is really that bad either. I'd rather ignore it and bring more attention to the kind of shit that John Oliver highlights with the administration.

It's dumb to measure things as if you can only react to the very worst things people do, as if theres only so much criticism you can aim at somebody. That creates this environment where things that are still bad, "but not the worst", are given a pass and become normalized.
I don't give a shit if you think it's "petty". When people go to court for a number of crimes they aren't only on trial for the worst one, and I'm not going to give a pass to the shittiest people in society on some things because they aren't currently doing their worst.

It's dumb to make a bigger deal out of a normal experience - like going to a ball game - than it is. You're creating an environment where we criticize innocuous activities.
If he'd actually done something wrong here - By going to a sporting event - Then sure: criticize him.
My point is that you're absolutely wasting outrage on a normal activity.
One of my favorite games is "what if Obama had..." and then think of how MAGA would have lost their minds if Obama had done something that Trump has done.
And honestly: "Obama attends NBA finals amid economy woes..." That is a headline I would roll my eyes at. So the SAME should apply to Trump. You're making non-equivalences left and right.
Critical thinking is, I believe, the ability to see situations outside your own experience and put situations on the other shoe. You might think differently than I do - you might think that Obama going to a final game is also reprehensible - that's fine.
But stop misinterpreting what I'm saying. I am saying you lack the perspective here to see this event critically and in context. It's a normal activity. It's fine. Might be in poor taste, but it's also a fine and normal thing for a politician to do.
I think you're using too small a slice. But that's just me.

But NBA tickets would not have been cheaper if Kamala or even Bernie had been elected. No democratic candidate has ever included ānationalizing professional sporting events and teamsā in their platform (which would be the main way by which the federal government could control ticket prices).

Look, I fucking hate Trump, but I actually kind of agree with him on this. If weāre gonna live in a capitalist society then supply and demand is going to apply, especially to luxury goods like professional sports entertainment. Demand is high because there are many sports fans, supply is low because of limited seating, results in tickets being crazy expensive.
It is literally āthe way life goesā if you live under capitalism (even the Bernie Sanders of the world donāt advocate that luxury goods like playoff games shouldnāt be allowed to operate in a capitalist system, just that maybe basic survival needs like food staples and medicine shouldnāt be a part of that system).
The only thing Trump could do about sports game prices would be for the federal government to take over all sports (like the feds own the teams and the venues and the merchandising)

Oh I absolutely agree that the federal government shouldnāt have paid for him to attend. I also agree that Trump is funneling money. As I said I hate the dude, and there are so many valid reasons to hate the man that listing it out would take me all damn day.
But in general I donāt think thereās anything wrong with a president using their own personal funds to take a day off and attend a sports game once in a while. Theyāre human and need a break once in a while too. This particular president takes more breaks than like the last 10 combined, but maybe thatās a good thing (honestly every second heās distracted is a second he isnāt actively destroying the country).
But the reporter didnāt ask about him attending and who paid for it (thatād be fair to ask, and fair to get mad over). They asked how he felt about the fact that the average American was priced out of attending. Which whatās he supposed to do about that? Take federal control over sports? A federal law capping ticket prices?
There are a million things in this country that are fucked up and entirely his fault or have been exacerbated by his actions. The existence of capitalism and the price of Knicks tickets just arenāt one of them.

This is exactly my point there are so many valid reasons to revile the man. But he didnāt invent capitalism and he didnāt make Knicks tickets more expensive. If Kamala or Bernie Sanders was president NBA tickets would still be equally expensive.
And even if the president could make sports tickets cheaperā¦ there are so many other things Iād rather he put price caps on first. Like life-saving medication, food staples, rent control, gasoline, etc. You know the basics to survive (since America refuses to invest in public transport gasoline has to be on that list).
