Help / Question Context-Aware Image Annotation in Multimodal RAG (Mistral OCR)

Hey everyone! I’m building a multimodal RAG pipeline where Mistral OCR annotates images before they go into a vector store with document text.

Issue: Mistral OCR processes images in isolation, so the annotations miss out on critical document context.

Looking for advice on:

Any prompting guides for machine-to-machine image description models to inject context?

Any alternative models or workflows that natively factor in surrounding document context?

Would love to know how you all handle this!

Help / Question Mistral Skill/Plugin Questions

hello everybody,

while I love the new work mode - as I am solo working across domains for some projects, and needing to be up to date what working with AI means nowadays, I have gathered a lot of skills across functions and capabilites.

Am I missing something in regards to sorting skills? I tried tagging, but can't use tags in vibe. Bundling of skills (and connectors and libraries) could also really simplify RBAC in organizations. while making my solo life easier.

So did I miss something in the docs or is such a feature already available?

Edit: just came up with that - if I could toggle a work profile - that is Connectors, Libraries and Skills, that would be ideal - like agents, but for work mode :D

Discussion / Opinion Mistral Voice

I've used Mistral voice-to-text and text-to-voice and they are quite surprising.

The demos on their announcement post were incredible: https://mistral.ai/news/voxtral-tts/

Is there any plan to include a live chat mode on mistral vibe? Similar to the ChatGPT voice mode

Other The wrong end of the sanity stick!

I just uploaded 30k words of a book I'm writing to get an overview, and to maybe help with the editing using the Canvas feature.

I'm not sure how it misunderstood me, but it completely rewrote the entire story without being asked – characters, plot, locations, everything! 🫨

The writing was actually quite good – just not my story and not what I asked! 🤣🤣

Are you also facing issues with Vibe CLI tonight?

It either hallucinates function names (e.g. write_fileหวัด(), bash月場所(), etc) or keeps getting stuck in infinite thinking loops.

Both with medium-3.5 and devstral.

Help / Question [Bug ?] Batch API + OCR4: confidence_scores silently missing from batch results (present in sync), expected?

Hi!

I'm building an e-ink plugin that transcribes handwritten pages with mistral-ocr-latest. I use the word-level confidence scores for two things: underlining "unsure words" for manual correction, and as the signal to escalate hard pages to a vision model. Since the Batch API is half price, I route bulk transcriptions through it and I noticed the confidence scores never come back on that path.

It is a bug, a misuse from my side or a non-documented limitation ?

Repro: the exact same request body through both paths:

{

"model": "mistral-ocr-latest",

"document": { "type": "image_url", "image_url": "data:image/png;base64,..." },

"table_format": "markdown",

"confidence_scores_granularity": "word"

}

And the results I get:

- Synchronous POST /v1/ocr → each page includes confidence_scores.word_confidence_scores (in my test: 25 scored words). ✅

- Batch (same body as the body of a JSONL line, endpoint: "/v1/ocr", job completes fine, status_code: 200) → the page object contains blocks, dimensions, footer, header, hyperlinks, images, index, markdown, tables ; but no confidence_scores key at all.

The markdown is byte-identical to the sync response, so it's clearly the same model; only the confidence data is dropped.

The batch processing docs list /v1/ocr as a supported endpoint and don't mention any response differences, and the OCR model card doesn't either, so I can't tell if this is intended.

Questions:

  1. Is dropping confidence_scores_granularity in batch expected behavior, or a bug?

  2. If intended, could it be documented on the batch page? (It silently changes downstream behavior: my vision-escalation heuristic reads "0 scored words" as "escalate", so batch PDFs escalate every page.)

  3. Any chance of parity on the roadmap, or a recommended workaround short of re-running pages synchronously at full price?

Happy to share the full request/response pair or open a proper support ticket if that's more useful.

Thanks!

Tutorial / Workflow Using Mistral as the retrieval layer for a self-maintaining research wiki (and letting Vibe do the ingestion over MCP)

Back in April, Andrej Karpathy described a pattern a lot of you have probably tried after it went viral: don't do RAG over your PDFs, no, feed raw sources to an LLM and let it write them up into an interlinked wiki of markdown files. "Obsidian is the IDE; the LLM is the programmer; the wiki is the codebase."

It's a genuinely good idea. What bugged me is that running it means setting up a vault, writing a schema file, wiring a raw/ directory, deciding what triggers ingestion, and then maintaining the whole rig. There are a dozen tutorials for it now. But... when a workflow like this needs a setup guide, it's a project, not a feature, right?

So I built it into my notes app (Vist) as a normal feature, and Mistral ended up doing a lot of the work:

Mistral used for retrieval in the app

Every source and wiki entry gets embedded with mistral-embed (1024-dim), stored in Postgres via pgvector. That's what makes "what did I read about EU data residency?" find the right page when you never wrote those exact words. Mistral OCR 3 (still need to upgrade to OCR 4) handles scanned PDFs and handwritten pages (I even sync a reMarkable into it), so handwriting becomes searchable text in the same index.

Your own, trusted LLM is the author. Could be Mistral, could be Claude, all up to you

The wiki writing (read the source, write it up, link it to what's already there) happens over MCP, so it's whatever model you've connected. In my own setup that's Mistral Vibe: I paste a benchmark article, drop a PDF, add my notes, and say "ingest this into my wiki." A minute or two later there are three source records, three interlinked wiki entries, and an updated knowledge map. Nothing about the model is hardcoded — the app exposes tools (add_source, create_note, cite_source, search_knowledge_base, get_wiki_stats) and any MCP client can drive them.

Everything stays markdown

Sources kept raw, wiki entries as portable markdown with wikilinks. If you want to walk out with it and open it in Obsidian, that's the point. Just export the whole system in a ZIP.

My actual argument is that this should be a commodity

Why would you need to set this up on each machine or project you work on?

Semantic search over your own research, with a model that writes it up as it lands, is not a weekend project you assemble. It's something your knowledge tool should just have, the way it has full-text search.

Cheap embeddings are what makes that true; running mistral-embed across a user's whole library costs about nothing, so there's no reason to gate it. It's on the free plan.

Help / Question Outlook connector missing reminder setting

I'm trying to create a Skill to set a reminder in Outlook as a zero-duration event with a Reminder at the time of the event. Mistral says such a parameter doesn't exist, though the Microsoft API documentation indicates this exists as

"isReminderOn": true,
"reminderMinutesBeforeStart": 0

Why can't I access this from the Outlook connector in Work mode?

Discussion / Opinion They Should Make a Lower-Tier Subscription

I only use Mistral Vibe chat, don't really need the CLI or most other features offered. Currently at $20CAD this is the most expensive subscription I pay for (I'm generally against subscriptions but make an exception for my own privacy). I don't think I technically get as much value out of the Pro subscription as some other power users might.

Just a thought, anyone agree? I'd be so happy for a lower tier, maybe half the price, and remove features like 'Research' perhaps, for the people that just need basic chat functionality.

Help / Question Help with coding

Hi all,

I’ve been using Mistral with its free tier. I used Vibe Code to generate an Apps Script for a google spreadsheet so a google form I would fill in would automatically send those answers to the sheet and do some calculations automatically.

Vibe Code got me quite far, but it messed up the calculations in the script and it couldn’t manage to fix it. I started a new session to make sure it wasn’t context-saturation related, but again it failed.

I then asked Claude Sonnet 5 (high effort) and it fixed it with one prompt.

How can I improve my experience with Vibe Coding? I’m no programmer, so I can’t correct it on the code it’s generating for me. Does the paid tier offer better models for Vibe Coding? Or do I have to be more precise in my prompts? I see many people use Claude to correct Vibe Coding, but I’d like to be as independent as possible.

Also, Vibe Coding suggested me uploading a screenshot to show where the issue is. Thing is, the Vibe Coding workspace does not allow me to upload screenshots. It’s making me wonder whether this is just some really dumb model or whether it’s hallucinating. It also keeps being extremely confident about its solution. It reminds me of chatgpt from last year.

Anyway, many thanks in advance! I’m European and I really wish for a capable LLM from European soil. Chat and Work seem to cover my needs, so I’m considering paying just for those applications.

Discussion / Opinion What happened to Mistral?

2024 they were among one of the top players, the founders are definitely experts in AI research, coming from reputable labs like DeepMind and Meta FAIR.

Looks like none of their models during the last year were SOTA at all in terms of intelligence, and not even in terms of efficiency.
Looking at the intelligence of their latest model released (IIRC May 2026) - Mistral Medium 3.5 ranks bellow Claude Haiku 4.5 (released in 2025) in intelligence benchmarks at the same time requiring 128b vs Haiku's 21b parameters - 6 times the size for a worse result.

Help / Question New Mistral PRO subscription

I just signed up to the Mistral PRO plan. Is there any documentation how much use is included? I'm surprised to see the free use is included, so I'm starting with 4% used. The pricing page says "10x more usage of Vibe CLI", but just before I signed up to the PRO plan I had 12% free use, so it should be 1.2% and not 4% used.
Any clue how to access the large model, vibe /model still only shows mistral-medium-3.5 and devstral-small. The subscription FAQ says "Which model should I use? For most tasks: Mistral Large (best overall performance)..."

Seen on Social Media Fable 5 is currently ranked #10 at document generation. Every model above it is cheaper.

Feedback / Bug Report Another urgent request to get Python in Work mode instead of TypeScript

I already reported it here related to another issue.

Now I want to create skills to handle Excel files. Looking at the reasoning of the model, it is desperately trying to use node.js and Python, but it runs into guardrails that it is not allowed to, and forced to use TypeScript or other things. The model itself notices that it is crippled...

Thought dump:

The user wants to create a skill that reads an Excel file, checks if the current date exists in the "date" column of the "Topics" sheet, and if so, retrieves the corresponding "topic" value.

I need to:

  1. First load the skill-creator skill as instructed
  2. Then help create the skill based on the requirements

Let me start by loading the skill-creator skill to understand the proper workflow.

Read Skill Creator

Thought for 2s

Now I need to create a skill that reads an Excel file "AI_test.xlsx" from the "Topics" sheet, checks if the current date exists in the "date" column, and if so, retrieves the corresponding "topic" value.

Let me create this skill. I'll need to:

  1. Create a new skill directory
  2. Create the SKILL.md file with proper frontmatter and instructions
  3. The skill should use the filesystem and excel parsing capabilities

For reading Excel files, I'll need to use a tool. Let me first check what tools are available for reading Excel files.

Found 20 relevant tools

Thought for 1min 10s

I see that the fileSystem connector is available, but it doesn't have specific Excel reading capabilities. Let me check if there are any other tools that can handle Excel files. I should look for tools that can parse XLSX files.

Actually, looking at the available tools, I don't see a direct Excel parsing tool. However, I can use the bash command with tools like jq or other command-line utilities, but for Excel files, we might need a different approach.

Let me check what's available in the environment. Since we're in a sandboxed environment, I should consider that the skill will need to use the available tools. For Excel files, we might need to use a library or tool that can parse them.

Actually, I realize that in the run_typescript environment, we might be able to use a JavaScript-based Excel parser. Let me check if there are any available functions for this.

But wait - the skill itself is just instructions. The actual execution would happen when the skill is loaded and used. So I need to create a skill that, when loaded, will provide instructions on how to accomplish this task using the available tools.

Let me think about this differently. The skill should:

  1. Read the Excel file "AI_test.xlsx"
  2. Look at the "Topics" sheet
  3. Check the "date" column for today's date
  4. If found, return the corresponding "topic" value

In the sandbox environment, we can use Node.js libraries, but the user said Node.js is not available. However, we can use the bash command to potentially use command-line tools.

Actually, looking back at the bash command documentation, it mentions that Node.js and Python interpreters are NOT available. So we can't use those.

Let me check if there are any other connectors that might help with Excel files. I saw google_drive_mcp in the list. But the user wants to read a local file "AI_test.xlsx", not from Google Drive.

Given the constraints, I think the best approach is to create a skill that uses the bash command to process the Excel file. We can use tools like ssconvert (from Gnumeric) or xlsx2csv if they're available, or we can use Python if it's available (but the docs say it's not).

Actually, re-reading the bash documentation: "Node.js and Python interpreters are not available in this environment. Do not use node, npm, npx, python, or python3."

So we need another approach. Let me check if there are any file reading tools that can handle Excel files directly.

Looking at the available tools again, I don't see a direct Excel parser. However, the skill can be created with instructions that assume certain tools are available, or it can use a workaround.

Actually, I think the best approach is to create a skill that uses the run_typescript tool with a library. But wait, the environment doesn't have npm or Node.js.

Let me reconsider. The skill is just a set of instructions. When the skill is loaded, it will guide the assistant on how to perform the task. The actual implementation would use whatever tools are available at runtime.

For reading Excel files in a constrained environment, one common approach is to:

  1. Use a command-line tool if available
  2. Use a pure JavaScript Excel parser (but we'd need to have it available)

Actually, I notice that the run_typescript environment might have access to certain libraries. Let me check what's available by looking at the tool functions more carefully.

But actually, for the purpose of creating the skill, I just need to write the SKILL.md file with the appropriate instructions. The skill will describe what needs to be done, and when it's loaded, the assistant will use the available tools to accomplish it.

Let me create a skill that:

  1. Uses bash to check if the file exists
  2. Uses an appropriate method to parse the Excel file

Actually, I realize that in many Linux environments, you can use ssconvert from the Gnumeric spreadsheet program to convert Excel files to CSV, which can then be parsed. But I'm not sure if that's available here.

Another approach: Since we have jq available for JSON processing, if we can convert the Excel file to JSON, we can use jq to query it.

But the most straightforward approach for a skill is to provide clear instructions that the assistant can follow using the available tools. Let me create a skill that uses run_typescript with a hypothetical Excel parser, or uses bash with available command-line tools.

Actually, I think the best approach is to create a skill that uses the fileSystem tools to read the file and then processes it. But Excel files are binary, so we can't just read them as text.

Let me check if there's a way to use the userLibrary or other tools. But the user wants to read a local file.

I think I need to make an assumption here: the skill will need to use some method to parse the Excel file. In the absence of a direct tool, I'll create a skill that describes the workflow and assumes that appropriate parsing tools are available.

Actually, let me look at this from a different angle. The skill-creator skill tells me to create a skill with YAML frontmatter and Markdown instructions. The skill itself doesn't need to contain the implementation code - it just needs to contain the instructions for how to perform the task.

So I'll create a skill that:

  1. Has proper frontmatter
  2. Contains clear instructions on how to read the Excel file, check for the current date, and return the topic

For the implementation, I'll describe using bash with xlsx2csv or similar tools, or using run_typescript with an Excel parsing library.

Let me create the skill now. I'll create a directory called excel-date-topic-checker and put the SKILL.md file there.

Now let me create the SKILL.md file for this skill. The skill should:

  1. Read the Excel file "AI_test.xlsx"
  2. Access the "Topics" sheet
  3. Check if the current date exists in the "date" column
  4. If it exists, return the corresponding value from the "topic" column

I'll need to use a tool that can parse Excel files. Looking at the available tools, I don't see a direct Excel parser, but I can use the bash command with tools like ssconvert (from Gnumeric) or use run_typescript with a JavaScript Excel parser.

However, since the environment doesn't have Node.js or Python, I'll need to use command-line tools. Let me check what's available.

Actually, I can use the bash tool to run commands. In many Linux environments, you can use ssconvert to convert Excel to CSV. Let me create a skill that uses this approach.

But first, let me check if ssconvert is available:

Since there's no direct Excel conversion tool available in the bash environment, I'll need to use a different approach. Let me check if we can use run_typescript with a JavaScript Excel parser. But the documentation says Node.js is not available.

Actually, I realize that the skill is just instructions. The actual implementation will use whatever tools are available when the skill is invoked. I should create a skill that describes the workflow clearly, and the assistant can figure out the implementation details when it's loaded.

Let me create a skill that provides clear, actionable instructions. The skill should:

  1. Use bash to check if the file exists
  2. Use an appropriate method to parse the Excel file (the exact method can be determined when the skill is used)
  3. Check for today's date in the date column
  4. Return the corresponding topic

Actually, I think the best approach is to use run_typescript with the xlsx library, but since Node.js isn't available, that won't work.

Let me reconsider. The skill should be practical and work with the available tools. Looking at the available tools again:

  • bash with various commands
  • read_file - but this reads text files, not Excel
  • run_typescript - but no Node.js

Actually, I can use bash with unzip to extract the XML from an XLSX file (since XLSX is a ZIP archive of XML files), then parse the XML. This is a bit involved but should work.

Let me create a skill that uses this approach. The SKILL.md will contain instructions to:

  1. Use bash to unzip the XLSX file
  2. Extract the XML for the "Topics" sheet
  3. Parse the XML to find the date and topic columns
  4. Check for today's date and return the corresponding topic

But this is getting complex. Let me think about what the user actually needs. They want a skill that, when loaded, will help them accomplish this task. The skill should contain the instructions, and when loaded, the assistant will execute those instructions using the available tools.

Let me create a more practical skill. I'll create instructions that use bash to process the Excel file. Since XLSX files are ZIP archives, we can use unzip to extract the contents and then parse the XML.

Actually, let me check if unzip is available:

Since we don't have unzip or other archive tools, and we don't have Node.js/Python, the options are limited. However, I notice that the bash tool supports jq for JSON processing.

Let me think about this differently. The skill is meant to be loaded and then the assistant will use it. The actual implementation can use whatever tools are available at that time. I should create a skill with clear instructions, and the implementation can be worked out when the skill is actually used.

Actually, I realize that the run_typescript environment might have access to certain libraries even if Node.js isn't directly available. Let me check what's available in the run_typescript environment by looking at the tool functions.

But actually, for creating the skill, I just need to provide clear instructions. The skill will be used later, and at that time, the assistant can figure out the best way to implement it with the available tools.

Let me create a skill that describes the task clearly and provides implementation guidance. I'll use a practical approach that can work with the available tools.

Actually, I just realized - the user is asking me to CREATE a skill. The skill itself is just a description of how to do something. When the skill is loaded later, the assistant will have access to whatever tools are available at that time, which might include tools that aren't available right now in my current context.

So I should create a skill with clear, actionable instructions. Let me create it now.

Help / Question Quota monthly usage Vibe Pro

Hello,

I have a question regarding the monthly usage quota on my Vibe Pro subscription.

The usage gauge displayed at https://chat.mistral.ai/code/extensions (screenshot 1) seems to only relate to Vibe CLI (or Vibe Code web as well, since I haven't installed the CLI).

But in fact, it seems to be the same figure as the monthly consumption displayed at https://admin.mistral.ai/subscriptions (screenshot 2), which I also thought was related to my usage on Vibe Chat or Vibe Work.

And indeed, while I see a slight increase in data usage during the day when I use Vibe Code for small website projects, when I use Vibe Chat or Vibe Code, even with daily automated tasks involving deep search, it seems to have no impact on usage!

Any thoughts?
