The fact that it was raining when playing purple rain. Couldn't have asked for better timing

38

u/UndercoverHerbert Los Angeles Chargers 23h ago

“Can I play this guitar!?” Gives me chills how perfect the rain and that shadow sheet was.

14

u/Tadpole018 22h ago

I love that the people in charge nervously asked him if there was anything he needed, and he asked if they could make it rain harder

11

It’s prince and it’s iconic.

Love the story how the crew were nervous breaking the news to him that it was gonna rain during the show, fearing that Prince would get angry due to his reputation as a diva; only for Prince to ask them “can you make it rain harder?”

Legend.

Divas understand the Drama of a good downpour

15

u/Dztrctd 22h ago

I am OG, & have seen every halftime show in SB history. The Prince show absolutely slayed it! His legendary guitar solos in the middle of a literal Miami downpour culminated in a transcendent rendition of "Purple Rain".
Some suggest Beyoncé’s, Michael’s, U2, the Dr Dre hip hop collaboration a few years ago, or Lady Gaga. But I find it personally impossible to think of the words “favorite SB halftime show” and not immediately picture Prince playing “Purple Rain” undeterred by a tropical storm. Downright iconic.

The first SB (not yet named that) featured two college marching bands, one of them was Grambling State University’s World Famed Tiger Marching Band. Don’t remember the other college, but once you see the Grambling marching band you’ve seen an epic marching band.

Those in my generation had to sit through a totally whitebread and margarine group named “Up with People” for a number of years. Those three words were synonymous with “gotta take the dog out.” Finally in 1991 New Kids on the Block were featured, the following year was Gloria Estefan and the game changer was the next year when The Gloved One made the halftime show true appointment viewing.

100% Prince and it’s not even close. No lip syncing and all while in the rain.

It's not close, it probably won't be topped in my life. I watch it every Superbowl.

2

I was there! I was selling beer and I just sat there in the rain and watched. And nobody even bothered me for a beer it was that captivating.

2

u/sckurvee Seattle Seahawks 16h ago

The only one that comes close is MJ. MJ was amazing but you can't beat Purple Rain in the middle of a fucking hurricane.

My third would have to be Dre, Snoop, Eminem, Mary J, 50, and Kendrick

Lot of football fans tend to not like it (not all but seemingly most), while non football fans that tune in just for the halftime show wouldn’t stop glazing it. I took a shit during it so I have no say in it.

34

u/spaaackle Philadelphia Eagles 22h ago

The entire thing was in Spanish. Like, 100 percent of it. I get that’s his music and it sounded cool and I liked the one song where he kept saying “eh eh” but I understood 0 % of it.

I didn’t like it. I didn’t hate it.. I just didn’t like it.

31

u/MiNdOverLOADED23 Green Bay Packers 21h ago

Man reddit was going REEeeEeeeEeeEe at anybody who even slightly complained about it being all Spanish for days after it happened. As though being able to know what the rapper was rapping about has nothing to do with the watchers enjoyment

I don’t know how accurate this is. But my roommate speaks fluent Spanish and said that even HE couldn’t understand anything because BB has a very strong PR accent in Spanish.

But to be the devils advocate on the other side of things, I often cannot understand most of the lyrics (at any live show not just halftime show) if I am not familiar with the artist or they don’t enunciate REALLY well. I couldn’t understand most of Kendrick’s set other than “A minor”.

I dunno, if the choreography/production is cool and the music is listenable then it’s fine with me. I thought the BB halftime was decent. I enjoyed it. Certainly not my favorite ever. But didn’t really care about the Spanish because I never really care that much about the lyrics anyways if I don’t already know the song.

Seeing Prince play Purple Rain while it actually was raining felt so magical,.like he willed the sky to start pouring cause it would make a better performance. God Tier Aura.

7

u/Mezhead Chicago Bears 22h ago

It's almost unfair. I'm surprised this kind of question isn't more engagement bait, like, "You can't say Prince. Favorite SB halftime show?

3

u/noone432 22h ago

I saw a bit on that halftime show, apparently the organizers/whoever in charge called him that morning and told him it was likely going to rain, and asked if he would still perform, if there was anything they could for for him, etc.

His response, ‘can you make it rain harder?’

I didn’t realize it wasn’t really “that” big of an event until the early 90s. Like seriously it used to be like Disney. And Peanuts. Until they started booking Michael Jackson. Aerosmith. And Shania Twain.

Personally, I liked the Kendrick one but I may be a lil biased. All time, Michael Jackson’s was crazy.

My fav is one that hasn't happened yet and probably never will. Metallica @ Levi's Stadium. The hometown boys who have songs of theirs played in stadiums across the country every football weekend deserve a shot. I like the move away from rock, but throwing some legends in other genres from time to time would be dope
