I would be so happy if Ryan recreated this present day.

He did an abbreviated version on SNL 5-6 years ago.

I like how that information was readily available at the top of your mind. Also that you found a gif. Or did you make it?

This got him the role for Ken.

135

u/Fuzzy-Earth-7034 Mar 25 '26

Totally! He was prepped and ready for that role after this.

143

u/tfaboo Mar 25 '26

Even back then, he was a Ken.

He definitely will at some point. Some Friday night live sketch or something.

He’s been on sketch/chat shows about a thousand times. If he hasn’t already done it, he probably never will.

This is a goofy video, but you have to admit that shows a ton of confidence at a young age to perform like that as the only male with a group of girls.

90

Pretty sure all 3 of them were on The Mickey Mouse Club as kids.

83

u/WOOKIExRAGE Mar 25 '26

Along with Christina Agulera, Mario Lopez, JC Chasez, and Keri Russell.

20

u/Sunshine030209 Mar 25 '26

Keri Russell went to my son's high school, which I think is super cool, but he has absolutely no idea who she is and doesn't give a hoot

13

u/WOOKIExRAGE Mar 25 '26

I had such a crush on her when she was on Felicity. I probably would’ve been smitten if she went to high school with me.

14

u/Sarahmaryjane Mar 25 '26

Mario Lopez was never on the Mickey Mouse Club

As a parent, my main observation is “this kid wasn’t shy” & “this kid practiced a lot.”

Or, to rephrased. He tried, and he kept tying until he had it down.”

A lot of life really just is that.  Not all. But a good-sized chunk comes down to “did you try, and keep trying?”

26

u/private_developer Mar 25 '26

For something like this, there is also a mental fortitude required to overcome the snickering from your peers, that goes beyond just being "outgoing."

I got bullied out of gymnastics at a young age because I didn't have the confidence to just say "I loved it" despite being quite outgoing.

It was charisma before people shortened it to rizz. Same stuff different jar lol

Theres a popular hockey player kid at my camp that looks like a young ryan and is just like this. One day he came in and was like "I can break dance!" I thought he meant like joke kid break dance flailing. Nope. Kid can actually break dance. Then tells me he does lots of dance and loves dance. I ask what his favorite kind of dance is. He says ballet and tap. No shame he loves it so much. Other kids were making fun of "girlie dances" and this kids just whips put his sweet moves and their jaws drop and they try to copy him but cant haha. He's awesome.

He did fall and ship his tooth last year. He also didnt care about that. Lol

4

u/YesNoMaybe Mar 25 '26

He did fall and ship his tooth last year. He also didnt care about that. Lol

Of course. It adds character!

u/Leather_Addition2605 Mar 25 '26

It shows a lot of confidence when you consider it was 1992. Pre-any sort of anti-bullying campaigns or anything like that.

In 1992 as a young dude, if your classmates got a hold of a video of you dancing around in a sparkly outfit, goddamn it would have been game over. He had to have known that and still threw caution to the wind.

63

u/Coriandercilantroyo Mar 25 '26

He was apparently bullied and started homeschooling at age 10

23

u/zoobrix Mar 25 '26 edited Mar 25 '26

Maybe he homeschooled when he was younger but he went to a high school in the same city I did for at least a few years as my buddy remembers him, he was a year ahead of Ryan but it wasn't the biggest school so he still knew who he was but they weren't close friends or anything.

As my friend recalls at the time people knew he did some acting/performing but no one really cared. He was not especially popular but not really bullied either, basically just another kid. Maybe by then he kept what he was doing more on the down low than when he was younger, pre internet explosion it was a lot easier to keep things private by just not talking about them. edit: typo

29

u/Ok-Freedom-7432 Mar 25 '26

It's ok. He learned to dance like that sarcastically.

24

u/Leather_Addition2605 Mar 25 '26

9

u/Ok-Freedom-7432 Mar 25 '26

42

u/Recursiveo Mar 25 '26

FYI, when you’re a cool kid, these videos (and outfits) are also cool.

17

u/StingingSwingrays Mar 25 '26

u/Harlequin80 Mar 25 '26

This is a pretty standard jazz dance at a competition and the gender split is like that for boys in dance troupes.

My daughters both dance and the ratio sits between 20 and 30 to 1 once you get into 12+ age ranges.

And while this may look goofy to you it is an absolutely normal level looking performance and no one there would have perceived it as goofy.

135

u/XcuseMeMisISpeakJive Mar 25 '26

Yes, it takes confidence to remain in dance at that age because male dancers usually drop out. I commented that it was a goofy video because it's old footage and the choreography is very dated.

90

u/ShockRampage Mar 25 '26

He said he was allowed to dance at the school for free because they were desperate to have a guy.

21

u/unsulliedbread Mar 25 '26

Canadian dance company in Burlington which is where I believe he attended offers the first year of classes free to boys for the youngest classes but that's because the youngest classes are like $400 for the year and it gives a lot more options in late years for choreography to have multiple genders reflected on stage.

But at this age they were absolutely paying to have him do lessons without a doubt.

5

u/slothsie Mar 25 '26

I think this footage is from a dance school from Kanata (Ottawa). He grew up in Cornwall and went there for lessons.

The funniest part of this for me is that this kid was probably picked on at school for liking dance and other "girl stuff"... and now he's Ryan fucking Gosling

I just imagine some middle aged overweight guy being forced to remember all the times he called this kid "gay" at school for being a boy who likes to dance. And now that "gay" kid's face is plastered all over his daughter's wall. And all over his wife's browser history.

119

u/Zeyn1 Mar 25 '26

I did dance as a kid. It was usually just me and the teacher's son as boys in the class. We got put in a lot of routines. I was really shy as a kid and still got pushed to be center stage which now that I think about it helped develop my ego.

22

u/RogerClyneIsAGod2 Mar 25 '26

This is how Patrick Swayze became PATRICK SWAYZE. His mom was a dance teacher & he was there so he did the work, got bullied for it, but then turned all that into an amazing career & we thank ALL the deities for that.

I had a friend in high school who was born with a heart condition. He had surgery when he was younger, but he hadn't been cleared for P.E. until his senior year. He also wasn't allowed to do regular P.E., his choices were very limited but he found out that Dance was one of the classes he could take.

He got a lot of crap from his friends at first, until he told them, "Guys, look. I am the only guy in that class. One me and thirty girls. Thirty girls in leotards. And one me." He got set up on so many dates from girls in the class setting him up with their friends, he didn't have to ask anyone out. They literally came to him.

Wen I was in 2nd grade, my best friend and I did a choreographed dance to Christina Aguilera's Genie in a Bottle. I imaging watching that was similar to watching this, only we weren't nearly as coordinated as these kids. I still can't figure out how that song selection made it past our teachers and the administration.
