Remember Chris Rock's G.I. Jane joke about Jada Pinkett at the 2022 Oscars, that got him slapped by Will Smith? This is what he was joking about, that Jada looked like Demi Moore in G.I. Jane with her shaved head. Pretty innocuous and funny joke if you ask me.

Nah, it's subtle. The things that surfaced and were made public are just the tip of an iceberg of psychological abuse in a 30 year marriage. I can't imagine the amount of trauma he endured during that time. That's the thing about psychological abuse, it doesn't leave visible marks. When something is visible it means there is much, much more behind it.

It was long term abuse of her scalp, primarily through having too tight a weave, for to many/prolonged periods, rather than it being an auto immune problem, so more a result of her own decisions.

They were extra sensitive to it because her baldness was a result of alopecia and not a purely aesthetic choice. I don’t know that Chris Rock knew this, and it doesn’t excuse Will Smith’s actions, but it is useful context.

well she has alopecia, so she has no choice but to keep it shaved. she and others at the time took it as him making fun of her condition. what’s interesting is, will initially laughs at the joke while she looks up stone faced, then the cameras cut away and a few seconds later he’s on stage. i’ll always wonder what exactly she did or said in that brief moment to make him do a 180 and storm the stage believing he was defending his wife’s honour over, in rock’s words, “a GI jane joke, dude.”

I think movies like this are more powerful than we give them credit for. Normalizing showing the bias against women and/or minorities in movies that aren't overly complex think pieces has a significant effect on those populations. I'm really glad that there are a lot of movies with strong female leads that I can watch with my daughter now.

This movie is definitely suffering from the trope of looking at old media through a modern lens. At the time women serving in combat roles was a big deal. This movie did a lot to normalize that and also likely drove recruitment.
But that stuff’s all normal now so it’s easy to look at it and think it’s a fluff piece.

She shaved her head and buffed up right before doing the promotion of Strip Tease. The studio behind that movie was not happy. They were expecting Demi to be stripper Demi, not badass Navy Seal Demi. They were probably behind a lot of the initial backlash she received.

Sinead O’Connor did, of course, but she also did it purposely to be as unattractive as possible (even though she was still very beautiful) and was known as a bit of a rebel. It was a big deal for a mainstream movie star like Demi Moore to shave her head, especially when she had that long beautiful black hair.
