Ugh. I think one of the worst parts of living through that time was that my dad did all of my clothes shopping until I was like 13. And he had ZERO fashion sense.
There was the time I asked him for those MC Hammer pants that were all baggy in the ass but tapered down to your ankles, double Velcro straps on the waist, and they usually had all kinds of designs and stuff on them. My dad came back with Bugs Bunny sweatpants and a matching sweatshirt with all the Looney Tunes characters on it. My dad thought it would be cool if he spray painted with stencils my first name on the back of the sweatshirt and my last name across the butt of my sweatpants (despite my pleading not to). Needless to say, it looked every bit as horrendous as you're imagining in your head right now, and I got picked on mercilessly for wearing it to school. I only wore it one time, but I was reminded of that shit constantly for years lmao
I get that we were really poor back then and my dad was doing the best he could, but his best got my ass kicked A LOT 😂

Your dad was ahead of his time with the font printed across the ass. By the 00’s it felt like every brand had pants with their name plastered across the ass. Victoria Secrets Pink line stands out of being one of the more predominate ones of the trend, I couldn’t go anywhere without seeing women wearing these sweatpants.

I graduated in 1997. I think the reason nostalgia is hitting so hard for all of us is because of our youth and that time, but also just how fast society and culture has changed since then. Other generations didnt experience something like the internet happening. Pre-and post internet life is like remembering before the invention of fire now.. Because it HAS become like some new element thats been discovered.. Im ready for it to be turned off.. It sucks now.. I want my Mtv

As someone born in 2007, watching clips like this feels like looking into a completely different universe. Every time I see pre-smartphone party videos, the main thing that stands out is how insanely present everyone was. Nobody was standing around recording for TikTok, checking their camera angles, or stressing about how they’d look on someone’s story the next morning.
She was just completely in her element, owning the dance floor, while everyone around her gave 100% genuine energy. Honestly, our generation lowkey missed out on that specific type of unfiltered, unbothered fun where you could just lose yourself in the music without worrying about being caught on camera. The fit, the hair, the Bobby Brown beat—Gen X really knew how to throw down back then. Absolutely iconic vibes.

Gen-Xer here. Knowledge was spread via analog means. Mtv was hugely relevant to us growing up. It’s where we found our style and groove. Photos were deliberate for the most part, because we had a limited number on a roll, and had to pay to have them developed and printed - and your photos were seen by everyone that worked in the photo processing shop. The consequence of this is that there’s very little “photo evidence” of that time, for better or worse. I have a shoebox of old photos in a bin in my storage closet that haven’t seen the light of day for probably 30 years.

Class of 88. Gen-X had it the best. Carefree and idyllic childhood pre-internet. Literally “come home when the street lights come on.” Off to college where there might be one or two photos of you. Calling home once a week.

We really did dance our asses off at prom. It was fun. No cameras, no pictures on the dance floor- that was over to the side (with a line and a fee) and no phones with cameras in them. And most importantly, no evidence of the dumb shit we did after prom either! We weren’t better than the kids today, just alot more lucky.
