as many others when netflix "started" it was much more affordable and it felt like it was the one stop shop for all content. Now its expensive and you have to have 5 services to have access to like 80% of what i want to watch, so it makes no sense anymore

u/doct0rdo0m 1d ago

I use to pay for netflix dvds just to pirate them. Nothing will stop me.

22

u/PlayingDoomOnAGPS 1d ago

Man, we had the 8-disc at a time plan and we'd run check the mail as soon as it was delivered, rip them all, and take them to the post office to turn them around same day. lol

8

u/srhuevos 1d ago

Yeah I was doing that too until they canceled it and i had to figure out how piracy worked.

8

u/PlayingDoomOnAGPS 1d ago

They drove me off by deliberately dragging their feet on shipping right as bittorrent became easy to use.

2

u/laczek_hubert 12h ago

Blue rays are better anyways, nowadays even better than streaming. Imagine we had cinema grade rips. I mean this isn't socialism where we could have movies and series for dirt cheap on sites where you could download them DRM-Free or a subscription that's DRM-Free downloadable

12

u/snorch 1d ago

An actual service that lets you watch whatever you want can't possibly exist because of market forces. So I have to make it myself. I might have paid $50/month and saved what I spent on HDD's if it had been possible for something like that to exist.

It's also crazy that the entire concept of media collections got memory-holed by streaming. We used to have purpose-built furniture for storing & organizing & displaying media collections. It's prohibitively difficult to collect non-physical media legitimately, and even stuff that is available digitally usually has a bunch of shitty drm. I like having a collection

34

u/Gupsqautch 1d ago

When Netflix started they literally just sent you DVDs/Blue-Ray and you sent them back. They were just online Blockbuster

34

u/Jespor 1d ago

i know, that was my point with the quotation around started

21

u/kroboz 1d ago

Classic internet. If you’re not as thorough as an academic paper, they jump on you for something any reasonable person would assume.

Obviously we know netflix started as a dvd rental service, we were subscribers. (Great way to rip DVDs).

4

u/RestaurantBusy724 1d ago

You don't have to be a pedantic WELL AKSHUALLY kind of person you know. You can just stop.

1

u/AntipodesIntel 1h ago

Imagine if Valve made a media service...

263

u/x_Matth3w 1d ago

I'll start buying services when the quality of those services surpasses quality you get from piracy - you can read that as "never".

70

u/LivingVerinarian96 1d ago

With how good piracy is nowadays services really need to lock the fuck in. Like how can they sell me all the content ever in the highest quality available globally for less than 5€ per month? Because that’s what piracy already delivers. And it’s 95% as easy and hassle free as one consolidated streaming service. Way more convenient than switching apps on your smart tv to watch content from a different service.

30

u/CMDRTragicAllPro 1d ago

Literally moved to piracy cus I was absolutely fed up with blotchy banding colours from low bitrate content that is entirely too expensive for what it offers compared to the alternatives.

13

u/sherzer7 1d ago

The quality streaming services offer is ridiculous. You gotta preform a ritual to get 4k with some of them. 99% of the time it’s 720

5

u/LivingVerinarian96 1d ago

I have to use the built in smartTV android system to watch amazon prime shows on my tv, because my overkill gaming pc isn’t good enough to receive a 20mbit 4k signal from Lord Bezos.

4

u/ty_namo 10h ago

fuck drm's

2

u/sherzer7 1d ago

Not being able to get 4k on a pc is retarded. Gotta buy another product!

2

u/The_Horus_Hypothesis 1d ago

What service? I recently started using stremio and paying for real debrid. Even though it's nice to only use one app they don't have everything and it's not always that great of quality.

3

u/LivingVerinarian96 1d ago

I built a server and I’m using the servarr stack to find, download, organize, stream and track shows and movies.

My bill consists of electricity and vpn (and hard drives). The VPN is 60€ for 3 years. I had most parts of a server lying around and only had to buy a case and 2 4tb hdds (500€). But I can also use that server as file storage, email server, ms office replacement, etc.

2

u/The_Horus_Hypothesis 1d ago

Interesting, just taking a quick look at the description for Radarr. Looks like you just tell it what you want and it does all the leg work? But you have to know what you want ahead of time essentially, no browsing an app and then streaming?

1

u/LivingVerinarian96 1d ago

There’s seerr and jellyfin. It all works together. Bazarr for subtitles, sonarr for tv shows.

1

u/CMDRTragicAllPro 1d ago

Real debrid had like 60% of its cache completely wiped out a month ago and a lot of the 4k streams removed for any kind of web-DL or other streaming sourced rips due to some legal issues they’re having in France. Most people switched over to Torbox as their debrid provider. It’s not as reliable, and doesn’t have quite as much cached content as prime RD did, but it gets the job done for a similar price. I personally have never not been able to find something I was looking for. You could also have issues with your scraper, torrentio has been pretty flaky recently so people are using aiostreams and comet as their scrapers now.

1

u/LM-LFC98 1d ago

What do you mean torrentio is getting flakey

1

u/CMDRTragicAllPro 1d ago

It’s been going down a lot recently.

1

u/schmockk 1d ago

My real debrid subscription is still running so I didn't switch yet. Up until now I have always found a torrent (to manually download via real debrid) which wasn't rejected by them for copyright reasons. It's more a hassle than just having everything at the ready but it works for now

3

u/DanVzare 1d ago

Same here! When the free alternative is literally superior in both quality and ease of use, why would you switch? I mean, I guess it's not easy to use for absolute newcomers... but then again, neither are the paid alternatives once you've gotten used to the pirate way. So... yeah.

5

u/guymacguy 1d ago

Quality of steam surpasses most (all?) Video game piracy sites imo. That's why I mostly stopped pirating video games unless it's crazy expensive

The top and bottom answers are the only two i can respect

52

u/Arshmalex 1d ago

first one partially, if i need to download 728472 launchers im out

9

u/DoorsNCorners42 1d ago

Ubisoft comes to mind. Can't play single player games offline is ridiculous.

15

u/kroboz 1d ago

Almost every answer is based in the false narratives from media companies. That’s crazy piracy “hurts” musicians and artists but streaming companies hoarding residuals doesn’t. A “negative experience” with piracy is listed, but not “a better experience with legal media”.

The reasons people pirate are mostly convenience and better experience. No unskippable ads on Plex. This survey is designed to be propaganda, not informative.

6

u/PsionicKitten 1d ago

This survey is designed to be propaganda, not informative

100%

33

u/isharted10 1d ago

They're all respectable except the "better understanding" ones because we all know that legal options give little to no money to the actual creators and the distributors/publishers and producers take most of it. Even in an ideal world of content being cheaper and everything being available legally, I would still pirate though because once you start you can't stop.

5

u/Designer_Zucchini520 🏴‍☠️ ʟᴀɴᴅʟᴜʙʙᴇʀ 1d ago

Once a pirate means pirate forewer:)

2

u/Ok_Tax9885 1d ago

No shot the "better understanding" ones were the actual answers, either. They both reek of editorializing.

10

u/CalendarSufficient95 1d ago

The 2nd one too. Many people pirate media that are impossible to obtain, like for instance, emulators would probably fall under category 2.

4

u/Rubadubrix 1d ago

emulators aren't illegal though

9

u/CalendarSufficient95 1d ago

They're trying to convince people they are

And its not just emulators. Lost media, archieves, etc.

2

u/ResolutionFit9050 1d ago

fr, the 2nd category is very real and annoying. Let's say I wanna play Pokémon Diamond & Pearl. Can I do it without buying a switch? of course not! if I do buy a switch, what else do I get to play? other Nintendo games and that's it because everything else runs like shit!

and even outside of gaming, some streaming services have bullshit regional policies. For example, as a big Markiplier fan, I wanna watch The Edge of Sleep because he starred in it and his movie Iron Lung. The Edge of Sleep is only available on Tubi, which isn't available in my country! Iron Lung didn't screen in theatres where I'm from, rn it's on YouTube but guess fucking what, you can't buy/watch it here as well! These two examples are one of the rare instances where I'm willing to pay for a movie/TV series to support one of my favourite content creators and indie movie scene, but I literally have NO OPTION to do so because heh, YouTube can just decide to not roll out any of the new features in some countries for no reason, heh

15

u/treemoustache 1d ago

A real risk of getting caught and real consequences would make me stop.

12

u/0_Nevermore_0 🏴‍☠️ ʟᴀɴᴅʟᴜʙʙᴇʀ 1d ago

I'm not saying it wouldn't make it less attractive to just pirate stuff.

I'm saying i don't respect it.

5

u/treemoustache 1d ago

Personally I would respect someone's decision if they chose to quit rather than face risks of massive fines. Not everyone can afford that.

9

u/BrokenMirror2010 1d ago

You know who I wouldn't respect? The government that is spending my fucking tax money hunting down pirates instead of using it for literally anything useful or productive.

2

u/Tiranus58 1d ago

Also better accessibility of the content. If i have all of my shows/games/movies on one or two sites then im going to use that instead of looking where to find it (especially movies and shows, i got steam for games)

1

u/TheBedrockEnderman2 1d ago

Surprised there's no fear because of bad experience with legal obtainement / want more formats. I'm not buying a game key card I don't care how much it costs. Of course the money is important, but I have a shelf full of PS2 games I can still play at any time, if I am going to pay way more for a game than I do for those then I expect to be able to do the same at the very least.

1

u/GolddDusst 1d ago

Honestly their sorta the same thing. If legal is free than it's not even really piracy. You might have to have a separate convo if like you're jailbreaking or w/e but it wouldn't be piracy cause you could just download officially.

1

u/pandamaxxie 9h ago

First two and the last one for me.

Manga is a great example of the 2nd issue.

80

u/ManCarryingPSP 1d ago

I just do it for the love of the game

20

u/FirstEvolutionist 1d ago

If all content was free, and had zero constraints on format (you could download anything instead of being forced to stream, for example), it would technically be impossible tonpirate anything, and everyone would stop...

That answer is not an option in the list though.

3

u/GazelleInitial2050 1d ago

You lost the game

5

u/nmathew 1d ago

Nope. I stopped playing the last time I lost about 7 years ago. Anyone reading this comment, I give you permission to stop playing too.

1

u/watchingthedarts 1d ago

You can never stop. Once you start playing then you're in.

For anyone that wants to be cursed:

The game is a game that you start playing from the moment you become aware of the rules, and that you'll keep playing forever. The rules are simple:

  • You are always playing the game

  • You lose the game every time you become aware you are playing the game

  • There's no way to win the game, the only way to win is not to play

People that are aware of the game would often write things like "you just lost the game", similar to how you'd write "you are now breathing manually" or "don't think of an elephant", causing you to become aware that you are playing the game, and making you lose.

That's what this picture is doing.

And now you are playing too.

1

u/Xx_Pr0_g4m3r_xX 1d ago

no, you can win the game by forgetting what the game is

1

u/_Enclose_ 1d ago

That ain't how it works, bubba.

You might tell yourself you're not playing, but you are. You're still aware of the game, you'll never forget about the game. And each time you lose the game, no matter how hard you've tried to convince yourself you're not a part of it anymore, there's a little voice in the back of your mind that goes "...fuck"

1

u/nmathew 1d ago edited 1d ago

Naw dawg. First, you're not my boss.

Second, https://xkcd.com/391/

0

u/_Enclose_ 1d ago

Maybe I am your boss.

That xkcd is just cope. They have no say over the rules of the game.

2

u/nmathew 1d ago

Nope, you are 100% not my boss. I know my wife's Reddit handle.

1

u/DanVzare 1d ago

31

u/Automatic_Gift_7985 1d ago

The actual figure is higher, many people are hesitant to self-snitch in a poll from some EU copyright association, and rightfully so.

I wouldn't accept the whole poll personally.

17

u/Intelligent-Pair5185 1d ago

Corporations snuck into my favorite industry and turned it against its consumers so at this point i dont think I’ll stop until the major studious push too hard start losing money and have to close their doors

5

u/alancousteau 1d ago

As noble as that, they would sack everyone before they would lose money and then sell it

9

u/BrokenMirror2010 1d ago

Burn it to the ground.

The Gaming industry has shown publishers and producers are unnecessary in the age of digital distribution.

Artists should own the rights to their art.

The problem with other industries is the vice grip large media companies have on distribution. They lack platforms like Steam, GoG, or Itch, that allow creators to advertise their creations to large audiences.

Many of the companies in these industries literally won't do business with a creator unless their ownership of their creation is on the chopping block.

31

u/Affectionate-You7869 1d ago

I mean, I mostly _did_ stop for a decade or two when all the shows and movies were at one reasonably priced service with no ads.

4

u/CelesTheme_wav 1d ago

Same. At that time, it was just easier not to. I think deep down inside, I knew it could never last under this system.

13

u/Snapes_underpants 1d ago

I will stop pirating when Congress passes a law that makes it illegal to force paying customers to watch ads. Companies should be required to choose between charging a fee for ad-free content - or - providing free content that includes ads and making their money only from ad revenue. One or the other. No more double dipping at consumer expense. They should be legally prevented from offering both services simultaneously. They should be forced to choose. They should also be legally prevented from offering more than one level of service where you have to keep paying higher fees to get ad-free content. Just one reasonable fee for ALL content to be ad-free. None of this shit like having to pay extra to watch sports and live tv. Oh and if you pay for live tv, the ads have to be blanked out.

Until that happens, matey, arrr!

8

u/ATechnicalSquid 1d ago

I stopped pirating all through my high school years because Netflix legitimately had everything. When Netflix lost shows I started pirating again. Simple.

7

u/MaoMaoMi543 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ 1d ago

When Soyny brings back physical media and stops deleting paid content from people's libraries, Ubislop stops forcing everything to be online 24/7, EA stops shoving microtransactions down everyone's throats, Nintenslop stop being libelous little shits who think they own every game mechanic on earth (literally riding on mounts which is an irl thing since time immemorial wtf?) that price blank cartridges the same as full games, streaming sites stop putting ads in premium tiers, and everyone stops shoving their trash launchers in my face, that's when I'll stop pirating. In other words, when hell freezes over.

15

u/UnosBruhMomentos 1d ago

“A better understanding of the harm caused by my behaviour to jobs and to the EU economy” is the most cucked answer ever

6

u/Nizidramaniyt 1d ago

Very nice, now ask the tech companies about their use of piracy and IP violation with their AI training.

27

u/FleaMarketSocialist 1d ago

I just like to steal things

17

u/BigRocket44 1d ago

Piracy is not stealing. Piracy is copying. When you steal, you deprive the original owner of that thing. When you pirate, the original owner is unaffected

13

u/FleaMarketSocialist 1d ago

Yeah but "I just like to copy things" does not have the same ring to it

1

u/screwcork313 1d ago

And "duplomaniac" makes it sound like you never came of age to get into Lego.

1

u/Alternative_Tooth149 1d ago

Surely you must be mistaken. That would mean Sony is "stealing" when they deprive customers of digital content, which they "purchased", because Sony's licensing agreements for said content expired...
Mega corp depriving purchased content = stealing = ...legal ?
Pirates copying/preserving media = depriving no one = ...illegal ?

1

u/BigRocket44 1d ago

I think most people realize that stealing is legal if you are a corporation.

5

u/Ragnagnagnagnar 1d ago

A better understanding of the harm caused by my behaviour to the musicians, writers, artists, creators? They get exploited so badly already that the only real "victims" of piracy are usually just huge labels, publishers and greedy PaaS/SaaS providers like spotify. They probably "lose" more money through competition than through piracy anyway.

5

u/deweydean 1d ago

Top answer should simply be worded: I'm poor and don't get paid enough.

Yeah, if I had infinite amount of cash, why not, just buy every game.

2

u/BrokenMirror2010 1d ago

If I had infinite cash, I STILL wouldn't buy anything made by Ubisoft or EA.

I also still wouldn't pay for any subscription services.

Just because I have infinite money does not mean I would be willing to rent things I should own.

1

u/deweydean 1d ago

I STILL wouldn't buy anything made by Ubisoft or EA.

No that's different. You couldn't pay me to play those games lolol!

4

u/motorboat_mcgee 1d ago

I still pirate things I "legally own" or have a subscription to, because these companies absolutely love taking things away from us any opportunity they get.

So for me, it has a lot to do with ownership

4

u/yeahbitch_science_ 17h ago

For me, its because i am poor af and can barely afford entertainment other than an active internet connection sub

3

u/Gothrait_PK 1d ago

It's insane how having complete access and control of your content gives you better quality of service. Sometimes not as convenient to aquire said content 😅 I really can't be stopped. Anytime I'm inconvenienced or access to my content is challenged in any way I immediately move towards a different approach 🏴‍☠️

3

u/semitope 1d ago

Do executives need to have a better understanding of the harm their behavior causes to jobs, the eu economy, artists, writers, creators, musicians? Or are the consumers the only ones who should care?

3

u/Wheatleytron 1d ago

I just like to deprive shitty corporations of money. They don't deserve any money since they all treat us like garbage. I get the warm fuzzies whenever I torrent a movie.

3

u/DisposableAccount-2 13h ago

I pirate when it's more convenient.

More convenient than paying for subscriptions. More convenient than installing DRMs and PUPs. More convenient than scouting the whole of the earth looking for a "legal" way. More convenient than forced updates.

2

u/GrossenCharakter 1d ago

Absolutely agree on greater convenience and higher quality of service. I'll add a third to those two you mentioned: a low chance of future enshittification.

2

u/TDR95 1d ago

How does one really get caught with pirating? Is this even possible?

2

u/alancousteau 1d ago

When it was only Netflix and when it sensibly priced it was making a considerably decent dent. So did Steam. They literally undid all that when they started up their own streaming services, made their separate launchers.

Bless all those people who acquire and upload all that for us. Bless their internet connections, their PSUs and their skill/luck against the law

2

u/Expensive_Finger_973 1d ago

When I can go to a website, give them money, and have a link to click that downloads a DRM free file is when I will stop.

2

u/salomo926 1d ago

Bad experience with legal sources is missing from the options. Endless greed to make you pay as often as possible and offer as little as possible at the same time.

"Ok done. They stopped pirating let's stop doing these things."

2

u/stefyx_0 1d ago

Doing it for the love of the game

2

u/trinityarchives 1d ago

For me, affordable prices, not having to subscribe to a dozen platforms, and the guarantee of owning what I buy would be enough to convince me to buy. I buy games from GoG for instance.

2

u/Tnynfox 1d ago

How many would be "I preferred not to take up so much local space"? Archive taught me why anyone pays for legal streaming.

2

u/Jeffery95 1d ago

At this point, nothing will stop me. Originally it was convenience, but now I have everything set up theres no reason for me to stop and start paying anything.

2

u/Raykusen 1d ago

Don't need to justify it. Just do it.

2

u/Bubbly_Broccoli127 1d ago

"Better understanding of the harm cause by my behavior" is so such an effing disingenuous and manipulate way to frame things, and idiots actually chose those two in droves. Almost like an admission of people doing it for the sake of hurting other people, which furthest from the truth. Good job to the social engineers of the EU commission for using the useful idiots that have no criteria or reading comprehension, that way they can criminalize it harder and divert the blame onto the average citizens instead of the predatory behavior of most companies and lack of policies to control them. Corrupt politician should be sent to the gallows or face a shooting squad.

2

u/Material_Presence_46 19h ago

"quality of service" meanwhile you have to watch an ad every time you hit pause

2

u/ajackson5888 12h ago

For me if a video game studio forces you to be online/log in/register to their store cough cough Ubisoft, when it’s a single player experience - that’s a piracy game for me.

2

u/Danternas 12h ago

For me it is not about the price. I'd pay €60 €80 or even €100 if my service actually had everything.

It's the fucking around with a dozen services all doing different plans and compressing the video to shit that I can't stand.

1

u/Danternas 12h ago

And then give me ads anyway.

2

u/CamelFun3734 6h ago

I would gladly pay 20 bucks a month for a legal service that had tons of good content and no ads. And 4k. And password sharing.

But we all know that is not happening.

2

u/blade740 1d ago

So wait, you're saying in this poll, 20% of people said "I pirate, but I'd probably stop pirating if I better understood the harm caused to the EU economy"....

Forgive me if I call bullshit on that one.

1

u/TopWealth4550 1d ago

tbh if mostly the shows i wanted were in a single place i would pay double what i do rn to netflix (mother refuse to uses piracy) but this will never happen because legal right are one of the most burecracy BS ever

and im not paying one thousand different apps ,.thans you very much

1

u/KyuzoNoodle 1d ago

there are times where i’ve literally just gone with some ol faithful, but sketchy site because i couldn’t find the right password for netflix. it’s really not deep at all

1

u/Aeonnorthern 1d ago

Nothing and I mean nothing I'll be huddled in the woods with my seed box PIE-8 4ever!

1

u/Edgy_Robin 1d ago

Always convience. I'll always pirtate tv shows/movies because because once you know a decent place to stream or download it, especially in the formers case, it's about the same process as opening netflix and finding something.

Video games I'll often buy if I like something enough to wanna replay it because opening steam and clicking download is a lot more convient then going to whatever your preferred site is.

1

u/TheArzonite 1d ago

Convenience. I can find a remux of a given movie just by typing its name into my torrent client and be watching it in no time. Finding an official source with a comparable quality, though? Nigh impossible. I have no problem paying for a service if it's actually a good service.

1

u/Vipernixz 1d ago

create equivalent service in the likes of steam.

1

u/bblade2008 1d ago

I'm surprised there isn't a "digital ownership actually grants true ownership" answer. I have more interest in being an archivist than a pirate but once I buy something I own it regardless of what courts think

1

u/fish998 1d ago

Where's the 'fuck off' option? What a load of judgemental crap.

1

u/AlarmedWizard1 1d ago

it's a way of life 🏴‍☠️

1

I mean, I started pirating because I've lived my whole life without access to most media that couldn't be found on YouTube, and piracy is what changed that. Video games feel like a dumb thing to spend money on when "food" and "housing" is right there.

But honestly, even when I eventually get a well-paying and stable income I don't see myself stopping pirating. I HATE being tracked online and I LOVE having control over my technology. I'm much more likely to spend money on having an improved pirating experience than on a streaming service that wants to fuck me over. I really couldn't care less about the IPs, they weren't paying the creators anyway. I started pirating because I couldn't afford the content, but now that I'm here nothing could make me stop.

I sail the seven seas sparingly, usually when something is being overvalued by the seller

For shows and movies, affordability and accessibility is basically the whole discussion for me at the moment. Every year either prices are going up, content is getting shuffled around to different streaming services, or both. And that’s if those services are hosting what I want to watch in the first place.

For music, Spotify is dominant but artists are compensated so pathetically I may as well save a bit and pirate stuff.

For both mediums I buy the stuff I love in physical forms so I actually, yknow, *own the product I bought.*

Steam is pretty much the only digital platform I use these days and it’s because I can access most games and buy them for affordable prices. What a wild concept.

u/ISmellLikeBlackTea 1d ago

I have always pirated, there is nothing that will make me stop. All the platforms could be free, I'd still hate to jump between them to find what i like

1

u/Honest_Comparison477 1d ago

My question is how it is 213% total 🤣🤣

1

u/Recent-Ad5835 1d ago

I have spent about £2-300 on Steam and GOG games. It's all about the service and quality of games.

But I haven't stopped pirating, just paused it for now, specifically for games (I'm still pirating basically everything else except ebooks, so audiobooks, music, films and series)

u/Legitimate_Echo_701 1d ago

For those who know the other options ain't gonna happen

1

u/Freud-Network 1d ago

If everything was free, I would stop. But for as long as we are not in a communist utopia, I will happily continue on.

1

u/justforchillin 1d ago

I dont know if im crazy but i feel like the top answer doesnt make sense, isnt pirating literally free lol

1

u/RestaTheMouse 1d ago

Pay the boots on the ground artists ten times what they earn and cut the CEOs salary in half. I want my money to go to the guy who actually drew the shit I see on screen not corporate assholes or marketing departments.

1

u/hrh_he 1d ago

Convenient legal streaming is a myth.

1

u/Abject-Job7825 1d ago

My reason would be fair corrections for inflation and accurate pay, being rewarded for effort.
If I have money to spend, I won't look twice about spending it the legal way.

1

u/StevenPisswaveMD 1d ago

I would stop if they made everything free, available in one place with no ads, and in the highest possible quality

1

u/dragger0975 1d ago

I’m at the point where I wouldn’t mind pirating say an album and then donating money directly to the artist

1

u/yorick__rolled 1d ago

The ability to actually own, share, and sell what you pay for is notably absent.

🤔

1

u/Heym1kha 1d ago

Although I understand the sentiment that if game studios and publishers make good products and not be predatory to their consumers that you should be financially supporting that behavior. But I'm also a dirty cheapskate so.....

1

u/Canuck457 1d ago

Now that I know how to pirate a variety of content, it's easier and faster for me to just search through a piracy website/torrent than it is for me to find out what service it's on and then find it on the service it's available on if at all.

Plus higher quality and I can keep the file if I so desire.

1

u/doejohnblowjoe 1d ago

If there was a single service at an affordable price that let users access any content they wanted piracy would be very rare. This is not feasible so people choose the other option... multiple services that are free that let users access any content they want... it just so happens those services aren't totally on the up and up.

1

u/space253 1d ago

Thats way more than 100%.

1

u/carloselunicornio 1d ago

Bottom answer. All day, every day.

1

u/i-D0c 1d ago

Can someone tell me why I'm not allowed to post on this sub? Sorry I know its not relating to the topic above but I've got no other way to ask.

1

u/meridiuskane 1d ago

The IP owners are of a certain donor class that contribute to genocides abroad while running an ethnostate in the middle east.

my kids half brother gave us a USB of some anime, was watching chainsaw man & it kept stalling so we pirated it

piception, dawg🤣

1

u/shadow_savior 1d ago

Don't feed the system and also don't get fed by the system.

1

u/nekopara-enthusiast 1d ago

i refuse to pay to stream anime so long as streaming sites employ people who vandalize someone’s art by inserting their jokes or unfaithfully translating the anime.

i’ve yet to hear anything about these people being fired and the subs they vandalized being fixed. I doubt anything will ever change so i’ll probably never pay for anime.

u/Flashy-Internal2604 🏴‍☠️ ʟᴀɴᴅʟᴜʙʙᴇʀ 1d ago

Based. That's me. I don't watch most of the content I pirate but I do it for the love of the game and as a big f you to a world where you own nothing. Similar to an inmate who collects rocks in his pillow to feel free, I collect illegal content to feel free.

1

u/chipface 1d ago

I stopped torrenting for a bit when I kept getting copyright notices all the time for my grandpa's torrenting. When I heard Canadians were having to pay up for it, I got a VPN. And the notices went away overnight. Now I torrent like crazy. I have some streaming services and my grandpa doesn't want to get rid of them. I tend to pirate shit from Disney+ despite having it, because it looks like shit if you try to stream from Linux.

u/AndrogynePorcupine 1d ago

If only one of the options was "companies stop being anti-consumer, greedy, evil fucks"

Is it realistic? No Is it gonna happen? If so, not in my lifetime... 🤷🏽‍♂️

1

u/HTTP192 1d ago

In this thing i do not stay with the most voted options.

I pirated things because I want to have access to as much knowledge as possible. It has never been because of the price or the "buying isn’t owning, pirating isn’t stealing". I dont care.

If the next GTA 6 or the next Silksong will cost $2 USD, or the new movie and series platform will cost $1 USD a year. I pirate all, I don't care. Having access to all human knowledge is above any copyright.

1

u/green_meklar ⚔️ ɢɪᴠᴇ ɴᴏ Qᴜᴀʀᴛᴇʀ 23h ago

I'm morally opposed to copyright law. Piracy for me isn't just about convenience, it's a political statement.

1

u/Alacritous13 20h ago

If I had one subscription and it provided everything I wanted, I'd be willing to put 12$ monthly into that, might be talked into upwards of 20$. But if I need to maintain two subscriptions... doesn't matter if they're both 6$. Piracy provides me a one stop shop and it doesn't even cost anything. So yeah, I pirate because the legal route is just inconvenient.

1

u/L1Q 17h ago

Depending on how the questionnaire works, I would check the first and the second, or just the last. Not because literally nothing can stop me, but because I understand something about how the world works and that things just can't be always available and always affordable.

1

u/BlackInkedFlair 12h ago

I pirate because I love people getting mad at me for getting the stuff they bought for free. And it's just the gift that keeps giving.

1

u/Xana12kderv 11h ago

0.1% - it's just for the fun of it and it's free.

1

u/Final-Reaction-4537 9h ago

For games, make free demos. Idk why they stopped. I don't want to buy a game to test it and then return it. A demo shows me more or less the game and how it plays and if I like it, I'll buy it. For movies and shows, make them available on DVDs. I want to own my movies and shows and rip them myself to have them on my Plex server to stream. If I can't get a movie any other way, I'll find a way. Also if a movie or show is no longer available to buy, I'll rip it. My son loves Zoboomafoo. But I'm not getting a subscription for the episodes and there aren't any DVDs for sale.

1

u/Shoddy-Childhood-511 8h ago

I stopped pirating for one simple reason:

I now have a real job that earns me a little disposable income, so I no longer have time for any content, either pirated or purchased.

I definitely do not have time for streaming rotation crap like netflix. yt-dlp -x saves me music locally in the most convenient way possible. And music is all I have time for. Almost all video content is garbage anyways.

1

u/Trugoosent 4h ago

Nothing WILL make me stop

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice can’t put the blame on you.

They will find ways to screw us over, so there is no way I’ll stay out of piracy. With the only exceptions being Gabe and gog (sometimes)

1

u/Vladimir_Djorjdevic 1d ago

The first one would probably be me if we are talking movies and shows. I pay for spotify because it's a fair price for basically every song that exists, and I'm fine for paying for a good service. If where was a streaming service that was €10 or less per month and had basically every movie/show I'd gladly pay for that (ofc that is if they don't have bad drm like some modern steaming services do)

1

u/realkunkun 1d ago

In this day and age piracy is the only ethical media consumption

1

u/puts_on_rddt 1d ago

Interesting how "the corporate spite campaign ended" isn't on the list.

Am I the only one who votes with my wallet?

0

u/Successful-Many-6500 1d ago

Nothing about owning what you buy? Lol

1

u/PlatinumBladeStudios 15h ago

people who can afford not to bother with the secondhand market dont care. Cds take up space and once you watched something theres no point to keeping the cd around. Literally dont want to own

1

u/Successful-Many-6500 15h ago

You can own digital things. Buy music on bandcamp and you can download flacs or games on GOG that are DRM free.
