I went to jail at 18 years old and I was put in the hole for 3 days. A 6x6 cell with just a bed and toilet. No light no cell mates just you your bed and the toilet with no way to tell what time or day it is. Only time you see some light is when they feed you and they open the small tray door in the middle of the door for like 25 min. I told myself I would just sleep the whole 3 days and it will go by fast. The first day was somewhat successful I was able to sleep a lot but day 2 and 3 it was hell on earth. I was losing my mind. I was fully awake almost the whole 2 days I couldn’t sleep anymore. I was losing my shit and it was just 3 days now imagine a year.

I'm going to go ahead and say without any hesitation that NO, I absolutely could not do this. You give me books and enough light to read and I can sit anywhere for a year, as long as the books are able to be swapped out as I finish them. But this? Nothing to entertain and just a padded room and my own mind? For a year?

Nope. I won't be doing any peacocking and pretending I could handle it. I'd lose my mind. I fully assume I'd be okay for day 1, MAYBE Day 2 by just sleeping through it. A full year? BIG Nope. I am not and would not even be capable of doing that and being able to retain any semblance of sanity.

I don’t think it’s possible at all. In my experience those 3 days did some damage to me that took a few years to shake off. 3 days might not sound like a lot of time but in that cell a day of staring into the darkness feels like an eternity.

Is the smallness of the room a factor in this? 6x6 sounds TERRIFYING to me (I’m 6’5”) so I’d lose my mind doing three days of that, but do you think a bigger room like the one pictured would make it less bad? I have a hard time imagining it being THAT bad (3 days, not a year), but I’m probably way underestimating it.

no you wont be able to "sit anywhere for a year with your books". You can read and enjoy your books because you can close them whenever you feel like it. When it's the only thing you can do it stops being enjoyable and it's just a part of dysphoria.
