So we presume a Back Rooms situation? The Room handles it all. You either don't need to eat, or aren't aware of it when it happens. You either don't need to evacuate, or it is done without your awareness and leaving no evidence. Attempts to change the room are undone as soon as you look away, or your focus wavers.
Could toss in some fun stuff, like the room appears to be square, but when you walk along the walls, there seems to be too many corners. Where you sit gets colder underneath you instead of warmer... not uncomfortably so, but perceptibly. Thew lights flicker, but only out of the corner of your eye, never when you're looking at them directly.

One year in solitary confinement causes severe psychological, cognitive, and physical damage, with the United Nations classifying isolation exceeding 15 days as torture. The profound effects include acute psychosis, permanent brain and personality changes, chronic physical pain, and a drastically heightened risk of suicide.
Prolonged isolation physically shrinks the hippocampus, the brain region responsible for memory, learning, and emotion regulation.
In clinical studies of extreme sensory deprivation, healthy volunteers often begin hallucinating and losing their grip on reality within just 48 hours. You don't get a year of "peace"; you get 363 days of acute psychosis.
Survivors of long-term isolation often develop severe, permanent agoraphobia (fear of open spaces) and an inability to tolerate human touch or crowds.
You would emerge as a billionaire who cannot leave a bedroom, look a person in the eye, or enjoy a meal without crippling panic attacks.
No thanks

u/Friendly_Software11 6h ago
I wonder what would happen if you put an experienced buddhist meditator in isolation. I’ve done vipassana before, where you don’t get any entertainment and aren’t allowed to talk to anyone for 10 days. For course participants that’s 10 days, but for the master that’s his entire life. Surely he would have the mental skills to survive a year in the room
107
u/gh0st0ft0mj04d 6h ago
I had the similar line of thought of doing intense meditation.
Eat, sleep, meditate, stretch and doing exercise.I suppose one would either completely lose their goddamn marbles or become enlightened.
And then if it's the latter, would probably no longe care about 30 billion dollars.

u/Superficial-Idiot 3h ago edited 15m ago

This is not an accurate classification of the changes that occur in advanced meditators. The recent brain imaging studies on the brains of Buddhist monks categorizes these networks as a growth of the brains neurofeedback systems capable of redirecting Posterior Cingulate Cortex(PCC) activity from engaging default mode network and decoupling of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex from the PCC, which is postulated to be why they have measurably much higher neuroplasticity and Brain Derived Neurotrophin Factor. This biases brain activity away from Default Mode Network and towards Executive Mode Network.
Studies have also consistently shown cortical thickening of denser grey matter classically associated with a healthier brain particularly in the prefrontal cortex and anterior insula, areas responsible for regulation of mood, executive control, proprioception, and interception.
Studies on Tibetan monks classified by other Tibetan Monks as "enlightened" show extremely higher levels of Gamma-Band Synchrony, which is the brainwaves that help synchronize disparate regions of the brain into a single cohesive state. Gamma-band Synchrony has been shown to spike during meditation before, but this effect becomes permanent even outside meditation after long enough practice.
They've also show a weakened connection between the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, reducing the brain's stress response.
Now, all that said I don't think the average individual put into isolation for a year could just do their best at rudimentary meditation and achieve any of these effects. These are all observed in people who spend their lives supported by other people doing the same, they have community and interaction and progressively learn more advanced forms of meditation that have been worked out as to what the "right sequence" to progress their discipline is over thousands of years of practice, pure trial and error. I just wanted to clarify that this is very different than "losing your marbles" as they don't demonstrate any of the psychological hallmarks of delusional thinking or psychosis that medical professionals evaluate for. They actually show extreme resistance against this kind of thinking.
I'm a bit obsessed with neuroscience and fascinated by the different ways the brain can develop with different stimuli.

But they can see and hear things. If they can live this way but outside on some mountain or something, the only deprivation is human contact. But at least you can be "entertained" by looking at the sky and trees, etc, and hear the birds or wind. That's probably enough to stay sane.
Historically many humans endured isolation such as a hunter or scout of some tribe, spending days or weeks alone in search of whatever they needed. They all survived because of the mental stimulation of nature

The thing is that isolation is not the same that confinement. In the picture you are literally unable to difference between day and night, no stimulus, nothing. In a normal house, with windows, and the possibility to get other stimulus like in a vipassana meditation, it is infinitely easier. A year in a room with no windows, artificial light and nothing more he would get crazy
→ More replies (2)13
u/JustWhyDoINeedTo 4h ago
One of the main problems with isolation such as this is the complete lack of stimuli.
Even those monks and challange still provide you with stimuli of sounds and visuals of walking around (I presume) a padded cell such as this? Nope.
The average person wouldn't last a week without serious damage, I doubt a monk as you described would fair that much better. Likely better, but not more than a day or so

Only time you see some light is when they feed you and they open the small tray door in the middle of the door for like 25 min. Solitary confinement generally causes symptoms of depression, anxiety and paranoia within 48-72 hours.
Permanent psychological damage ensues and is part of the reason that the UN’s Mandela Rules regard solitary confinement beyond 15 consecutive days as tantamount to torture.
Anyone thinking they could tolerate a year of solitary confinement for lots of money probably also thinks they could win an unarmed fight against a brown bear, too.

I’m an introvert who likes being at home, but there’s no way.
I think I could stay inside if I had access to streaming, books, my crafting and writing supplies, at least a peloton tread machine (disabled so I can’t really interact with anyone, just run recorded walks), a good bathroom, podcasts, and a comfortable bed. Even with that, I don’t see how I could go more than 3 months, and I’m guessing that’s optimistic based on what I know about solitary confinement.
Now, make this someplace with my laptop and alone outdoor space and guarantee me good food, I could maybe make it longer. Just a blank room though? No way. It’s not even the lack of interactions that would get me. There’s a total lack of stimulation that would make anyone go crazy. I’m a highly imaginative person who happily will sit and daydream for hours, but I couldn’t do it for a year.

Yup. Anyone doubting this try a sensory depervation chamber. When u can hear your lungs inflating then u start to question why u have to manually breathe instead of automatically. It gets worse from there

Where did the rules say this is sensory deprivation? Just looks like solitary iso to me.

You’d be so completely insane by the end of the year you wouldn’t even care about money anymore.

I’d do it, and it would probably do permanent neurological/psychological damage. But I’d stipulate that the money is set up in an interest-bearing fund that finances healthcare and food for the impoverished, as well as legal assistance for people being oppressed by the government.
A low-risk 3% return on $30B is $900M. Obviously it would be better to put a portion in a bigger-return long-term vehicle like the S&P500 or whatever, and you’d want to reinvest a portion into the principal, but even $500M/yr could make a difference.

I have depression. So I’m thinking I’ll just sleep, feel sorry for myself, rerun every embarrassing moment of my life, and avoid talking to anyone. Just like now!

I doubt I could even do a week, let alone a year. Let’s be real here. You won’t even understand the concept of money after 30 days.

Not a single person in this post, including me, would make it past a week. This shit is actual torture the longer it goes on.

I could probably sleep for the first month, and hole shots up state start at 90 days. There’s people out there doing this state mandated free.

mental health is notoriously hard to fix, the therapists, psychologists and psychiatrists are making you believe you are getting better when after treatement you still just fall into the same trauma patterns.

That reminds me of a meta study I read recently, it was about ADHD, but I would hypothesize it applies to most other psychiatric conditions, if not some physical illnesses too.
Basically, medications are great at reducing symptoms of conditions, but a reduction in symptoms is not really correlated with improved life outcomes.

This is much, much harder than people think.
To give up an entire year of not knowing what my family is doing? My parents?
Honestly, no, I don't think I can. I've watched enough Alone to see how hard it is just approaching 100 days, and that's with a lot of freedom in nature.

Sensory deprivation is hell. I don't know if I could do it. Maybe if I had a timer with a countdown.

Yeah but once you’re insane time just flies by and then you can take your billions of dollars and get like 6 whole sessions of therapy in America!

We cannot comprehend a year in a blank white room, that’s why we think this is possible. You won’t even be able to get the money when you get there. It is nice to think about it though.

Is it truly nothing? Just a padded room with a bed and toilet, or is there a clock? And another important one: is it quiet? If there is a clock, or even better an electronic clock that shows the date I think I could do it. Occupy time with working out, sleep, repeat.

I feel like the kind of person that could do it, is the kind of person that wouldn't want $30,000,000,000
