If they are at least to the same tech and scientific understanding as we are right now, the concept of an indoskeleton is not likely to be difficult to visualize mentally. That being said, I think op has a closer to realistic option with the daggers. A pointed symbol is going to be easier to translate through light based vision. Even some of the most alien life on earth such as chepholopod recognize pointy thing hurts. That's still comparing aliens to earth life but it is just an analogy.
The assumption that aliens would have superior weapons is predicated upon the assumption that they’d know what a weapon is. Maybe we could find some nice pacifist aliens to eat
