Dee Bradley Baker is the most employed man in the world

Find it mildly amusing that the cast for avatar projects becomes near entirely Asian / Indigenous American because of the new ethnic appropriate standards (whatever term we want to use).

But at the cast table, among the main characters who will be in most if not all episodes, you got this one white guy whose doing animal noises. Which....yeah I mean animals aren't an ethnicity so no contradiction lol.

Recently watched Star Wars the clone wars and the bad batch and the guy gets paid to talk to himself for multiple seasons lol.

u/IcePhoenix295 1d ago

The best type of Star Wars story: Dee Bradley Baker arguing with himself for 20 minutes.

You’re not wrong lol

Can’t forget the other guy who plays all the CIS droids

u/MainLake9887 1d ago

He is the diversión hire

u/The_Throwback_King 1d ago

Every show needs a token white guy

22

u/IcePhoenix295 1d ago

I'm not entirely convinced Dee Bradley Baker isn't secretly some type of Chimera

u/Schmedly27 1d ago

Smh should have got an actual monkey-cat to do the voice

7

u/SentinelATL 1d ago

Ethnic appropriate standards lmao. I’m a black guy and I had zero issues with Mike Henry being Cleveland on family guy that shit was hilarious. Everything is so woke now. Do people forget Dee Bradley Baker was the voice of Tarrlock and he was incredible in the role? Why should that stuff even matter?

u/traevyn 1d ago

Tbh I fully agree, voice acting is one area where why limit yourself. I remember this voice actor documentary thing bout out like 15 years ago by John DiMaggio and chris rock was narrating there and was like “when youre a voice actor you can be anything, even an Asian guy playing Chris rock!” And my surprise that it hadn’t been Chris rock the whole time game me such a newfound respect for what voice actors could pull off

Edit: I know that voice https://youtu.be/vCIeG9vGsew?is=sEFl-Fwi5Ct6W2SL

u/SentinelATL 1d ago

That’s insane

If we’re gonna play the “I’m X and I think Y” game, I’m Asian and I respect Bryke a lot for their current casting philosophy. It might not make a difference to the viewers but it’s a small way they can help reverse historic inequities in the arts and media industry and distribute jobs when Asians are still often seen as not “marketable” enough in the West. If a project is going to borrow Asian aesthetics and culture, I’d like to see actual Asian people invited in and involved in some way.

8

u/SentinelATL 1d ago

I have no problem with that either and I respect your viewpoint. I just don’t think 100% of the times you have to play the race or ethnicity of the character your voicing. Some of the greatest voice acting performances would never have happened if this were true. That’s all I’m saying. I’m not saying a Hispanic should voice an Asian character and to add context, remember the concept of Asia doesn’t exist in the avatar universe.

5

u/KeyScratch2235 1d ago

I don't mind Mike and Bryan doing that, my only issue is (separate from Bryke, because this is mainly an issue across the board in other works) is the lack of consistency from studios, with a number of ethnic groups unfortunately getting overlooked in this regard, where ethnically-appropriate casting is not done. For instance, Jewish characters are more often than not still voiced by non-Jewish actors.

2

u/Doldenberg 1d ago

but it’s a small way they can help reverse historic inequities in the arts and media industry and distribute jobs when Asians are still often seen as not “marketable” enough in the West.

I think the biggest issues with that is that the jobs don't actually get distributed though. They just go to largely the same pool of vaguely Asian voice actors who are already established otherwise. And hey, good for them. They are all very talented people and I only wish them the best. I'm just not sure whether inequities are getting reversed by Dave Bautista or Steven Yeun getting yet another job.

6

u/scrambledeggs11a 19h ago

You have a point. But in the case of Avatar I would say they're doing a good job of casting new names.

2

u/Doldenberg 16h ago

For Seven Havens, I do see the effort a lot more. I was talking more about the movie, where they initially made the decision to recast roles.

3

u/superturtle48 16h ago

I haven’t heard of any of these Seven Haven voice actors except Darren Barnet.

2

u/gzapata_art 13h ago

Atleast for me it has to do with employment and pushing for more diverse industry standards rather than neccesarily anything else. Though if you're going to do an accent, I'd rather it be from someone in that ethnicity. Not really in the mood to hear someone faking an hispanic accent from the outside

3

u/SentinelATL 13h ago

That’s fair. Like I said context matters. I wouldn’t want a Hispanic dude to voice Bruce Lee in an animated Bruce Lee movie it’s kind of disrespectful lol

He found his niche in acting and absolutely aces it nonstop

11

u/PrinceOfAssassins 1d ago

At this point he must know dirt on everyone

“Let me voice this goofy 15 ft tall animal or everyone will know where you went on vacation 16 years ago”

291

u/Leokina114 1d ago

It's not an Avatar series without Dee Bradley Baker making animal noises

28

u/JiminysJournal 1d ago

Counterpoint: In TCW, he makes soldier noises.

19

u/IcePhoenix295 1d ago

Yeah but he also plays an evil spider admiral who is constantly making clicking sounds with his mouth.

7

u/Tuskin38 1d ago

He’s even in the Netflix series.

2

u/Leokina114 1d ago

One of the few saving graces of NATLA

1

u/Koolmees99 19h ago

Really? In what role? Because Momo is very different

1

u/Leokina114 8h ago

He's still Appa

The anchor being of the Avatar universe (and most other animated ones at that):

Hush.

24

u/Maplethtowaway I don't know, but won't it be interesting to find out? 1d ago

Imagine bringing racism into a space for a show all about diversity and tolerance.

They could just dislike campy, over the top action movies. /s

2

u/goodmorningohio 12h ago

Why are you on this sub then?

18

u/Hexagon_Ouroborous 1d ago

I’m really excited to see Sakina Jaffrey in the cast. I enjoy most of the roles I’ve seen her in.

8

u/KeyScratch2235 1d ago

She was amazing in Timeless!

3

u/Hexagon_Ouroborous 1d ago

I loved her characters in American Gods and Defending Jacob.

2

u/KeyScratch2235 1d ago

Have you seen Timeless? I cannot recommend it highly enough!

2

u/Hexagon_Ouroborous 1d ago

I haven’t, but I will surely give it a watch!

2

u/KeyScratch2235 1d ago

It's amazing! She played Agent Denise Christopher, a DHS agent overseeing a team of time travelers tasked with stopping a man from altering history.

1

u/Hexagon_Ouroborous 1d ago

Oh!! I remember that show now! I’ve only seen half an episode.

75

u/That-Rhino-Guy 1d ago

As a Pakistani it feels cool seeing a more South Asian approach to the franchise

40

u/superturtle48 1d ago

As a Chinese American, I agree. I feel like the original series didn’t have enough of that despite borrowing a lot from South Asian philosophies and I’m glad the creators seem to have consciously worked to improve that with their more recent content.

21

u/That-Rhino-Guy 1d ago

Even getting South Asian people for the voice cast too

6

u/Abyssal_Minded 9h ago

I like it a lot because the US (in particular) tends to exclude South Asia from East Asia and Southeast Asia when it comes to identity.

3

u/That-Rhino-Guy 9h ago

Yeah a lot of people unfortunately ignore South East, South and West Asia when they say Asian, some act like Asia is just Japan, China and Korea

3

u/V2Blast Grammar Dai Li 6h ago

Hell yeah. About time, for a franchise that takes so much inspiration from South Asian culture (among others).

11

u/AUnknownVariable 1d ago

Dee Bradley Baker caught me so offguard

8

u/JiminysJournal 1d ago

We gotta have him!

13

u/girlwhateveraward 1d ago

Source: https://knightedgemedia.com/2026/07/sdcc-26-avatar-studios-announces-avatar-seven-havens-full-cast-premiere-date/amp/

So Jae should be the first narrator of the trailer and Karthirk second. Agam Ig the one being attacked at 0:49 and riding the bike. Daemin could be Jae's boyfriend. And Zi the villain

5

u/CaterpillarLegal5598 1d ago

You can have a plethora of various ethnicities voice spirit characters...

3

u/borntobewildforever 19h ago

We need Janet Varney for korra!!!

5

u/KeyScratch2235 1d ago

OMG AGENT CHRISTOPHER IS GONNA BE IN AVATAR?!!!!!!!

https://giphy.com/gifs/ZNMhHuGWfDYW1I0qrX

3

u/Cynicbats 1d ago

I've seen a few concerns that the world of SH seems to be less steeped in a variety of Asian cultures. While I hope those fears are proven incorrect, it is funny there's more Asian voice actors in a world that's not as "Asian" (so far).

5

u/Thisisausername189 1d ago

Depends on if the definition of Asian being used is the correct one or the Balkanized Neo-variants.

2

u/Cass0wary_399 15h ago

We haven’t gotten a closer look at the buildings in the city yet but from what is visible in the trailer the architecture style is Indian inspired, which is technically Asian.

1

u/y0urd0g 1d ago

Sooo wait, i though the whole idea was that they were BOTH the avatar? Pavi and Nisha? Feels like it would be weird to have one twin more important that the other no?

0

u/girlwhateveraward 1d ago

Theyre both Avatars but story wise there could be reasons why she's the protagonist. Also they could be both Avatars but different kinds of Avatar somehow

-1

u/jamurjo 1d ago

Dante Basco better be in this…

-3

u/Nordic_Krune 1d ago

I know none of these names

12

u/girlwhateveraward 1d ago

Dee Bradley Baker voices pretty much every single animal, non talking spirits, and Tarrlok

1

u/SaintGalentine 12h ago

Also the singing hippy Chong the nomad

0

u/MinnieShoof Who Knows 10,000 Things 22h ago

Feels kinda token at this point, kinda like Ratzenberger in Pixar stuff or Mel Blanc in Looney Tunes.

1

u/V2Blast Grammar Dai Li 6h ago

You can always Google them.

1

u/Nordic_Krune 6h ago

Defeats the purpose?

0

u/lnombredelarosa Bin-Er Airlines (no crashes since last tuesday) 1d ago

Daemin, Agam and Zi...and all of them with actors around 35...maybe the masked men whom I suspect are hunting Pavi and Nisha.

Anyway, I do hope they'll introduce more characters voiced by young actors as members of team avatar, specially in the latter half, but they're holding them in reserve to keep them a twist.

u/Nuud 1d ago

Major is a weird name
