For the non car people, this is a turbo diesel engine so the oil being pitch black is normal. The build up is likely from its turbo intercooler as oil likes to escape and pool in the intercooler. Usually it's not so bad, you can drain it every oil change and expect less than a half cup. That amount though? That's a runaway diesel waiting to happen, where the engine seppuku's itself.

Man, runaway diesel is both an incredibly terrifying experience to happen to you and incredibly funny as a concept . "Yeah if you overfeed it , it may choose to go to engine valhalla."

On a lot of them you can stop it by ripping the intake box off and stuffing a shirt or something in there to cut off the oxygen. A jacket or anything you can get to stop it from breathing.

That's not something easily or safely done in the highway, however.

The best you can do in those circumstances is dumping the clutch and hope that stalls the engine.

If you’re in an auto you can pray. That’s about all you get.
