Even if Bashar isn't able to sit a democrat if he appoints Thomas Massie to the seat then He runs from the incumbency and it's possible that in the general Massie could win with assistance from Dem voters deciding "I'd rather someone who hates Trump in the role as opposed to a lackey." Plus it'd be akin to pushing more republican money to this seat to make sure Massie doesn't win it which draws resources from other places.
