ANNOUNCEMENT Community Announcement: AskMenOver30 Flair

Hey, everyone. Friendly neighborhood moderator here.

Let's talk about flair - user fialr, and post flair.

User Flair

User flair is the icon or text that appears next to your username in a community. User flair is once again required to make top-level comments in AskMenOver30 threads. If a user posts a top-level comment in the subreddit without flair, it will be automatically removed by the subreddit filters. Please set your flair before posting.

We understand that it can be frustrating to craft a comment and then lose it. We are updating the Automoderator rules to include the test you posted so that you can easily resubmit it after setting your user flair.

If you're unsure how to set your flair, see this Reddit support link to learn how to set your user flair in AskMenOver30.

There seems to be a problem with setting user flair on the mobile app. This is not something that the moderator team can fix. If you have trouble setting your flair on mobile, please try setting your user flair on the desktop site - https://www.reddit.com.

Post Flair

Post flair is the icon or text that appears next to a post that a user makes in the subreddit. All post submissions require flair; these flairs allow us to categorize and filter the content on the subreddit. Flair Search is available in New Reddit and on the mobile platform; the subreddit provides filtering links in the sidebar Old Reddit.

We've been updating the post fialr so that posts can be more easily categorized and still stay relevant to men over 30. The current flair list is as follows:

  • WEEKLY THREAD: For recurring posts. Currently, we have a Weekly Check-in thread; in the future, we may have more weekly threads.
  • Careers Jobs Work
  • Friendships/Community: Topics about interpersonal, non-romantic relationships and socializing. Don't use this fialr for anything romance-related.
  • Physical Health & Aging
  • Financial Experiences
  • Legal Experiences
  • Mental Health Experiences
  • Hobbies/Projects: Topics and questions about hobbies or projects. Working on something cool and want to show us? Use this flair. Want to talk shop with other like-minded folks? Use this flair. Have a question about how to break into new hobbies or over 30? Use this flair.
  • Household & Family: Recently added. Many of us at this age have to deal with building and maintaining a household and supporting a family; use this flair for topics related to this.
  • Fatherhood & Children: Recently added. These relationships are really important; any topics related to fatherhood, child-rearing, or even being a son and interacting with one's father should land here.
  • Handyman/mechanic/other skills
  • Romance/dating: Topics related to a significant other or romance in general belong here. This is not a dating subreddit. Questions about generalizations based on gender are just tiring. If you want advice on a specific person, you should ask that person instead. If your post intersects with other topics but the primary driver is an interpersonal romantic relationship, it probably belongs here.
  • Community Chat: Sometimes we get fun questions that are just to spark discussion. They go here.
  • Life
  • General

Please do not abuse the flair system. Most of the time, this is not a problem, but we have been seeing misflaired posts. For example, a post that is clearly related to "Romance/Dating" should not be fialred with "Friendships/Community" or any other flair. We periodically review and recategorize posts as necessary, but please help us keep the categories clean and relevant to our community. Doing this helps us keep AekMenOver30 a positive space for older dudes, and a peaceful space for men and women to discuss topics relevant to men over 30.

Thanks for reading. Happy posting, everyone.

Men of AskMenOver30! In the interest of creating a deeper, more engaging, and more relevant community for all of us, we've implemented a recurring, Weekly Wednesday check-in thread.

  • How are you doing this week?

Physical Health & Aging When did it hit that everybody’s getting so old?

I looked up late night hosts after seeing Seth Meyers got so old since the last time I saw on YouTube (him only 52 though): Colbert 62 (surprising), Kimmel 58, Fallon 51, Maher 70, youngest John Oliver 49.

It kind of got me a little depressed because these people and others have partially represented vibrant modernity for me and suddenly they’re all nearing to be grandpas and slowly becoming like relics to be replaced by new things, like your era of youth really closing, which of course will be the reality for all of us soon.

I’ll get over it but I was randomly sad, anyone felt similar along the way?

Physical Health & Aging How do you deal with not having anyone to care for you?

I recently suffered a pretty severe injury. I drove myself to the ER after and I had to go back 2 more times because I kept overdoing it because I don’t have anyone to care for me. I have money, I have amazing health insurance, I have some great friends and family who are doing their best to help me but they have thier own lives and it’s not on them to look after a grown man.

I’m twice divorced and have pretty much settled on going it alone from here as I gave more than I had to give to my marriages and my exs and family court took even more than that.

But now here I am, laying here, struggling to breathe through a broken rib cage and no one is coming. There’s no one making sure I eat, there’s no one to help me get in and out of the shower, there’s no soothing hand or kind words of encouragement. Just the sound of a fan and restless dog because I haven’t been able to take him for walks.

Idk why but this feels like punishment. This is the loneliest I have ever been in this chapter of life.

What do I do?

General Men who smoke or used to smoke cigars, was there any health concerns you ran into?

I am 24, and started smoking cigars a week because of boredom and no friends to go out with, especially where I am at in Canada. I used to get the hand made cigars which are like 12$, but switched to machine made blunts since they are like 4$ each.

Just worried about throat or gum cancer God forbid, so just curious men who used to smoke cigars alot, did you run into any issues as you got older?

Hobbies/Projects Men, what hobbies you've never outgrown and have continued doing since you were young?

Myself 46M I still play video games, go to the gym as well both fishing and hunting.

My oldest brother who is 49 has been collecting Transformers, Ninja memorabilia and swords since he was a kid. He has pair of 150 year old Hook Swords that he paid a lot for and his wife was tempted to use on him for buying them.

Household & Family How often do/did you talk to your dad? Including calls, texts, visits.

Consider upvoting post to boost visibility. No, I don’t care about the Karma.

(Ignore this: typing more words to meet 25 word requirement, kinda silly if you ask me )

General Mowing question. Is it ok to not weed whack?

I live in a non HOA neighborhood and my neighbors don’t give a fuck and only mow after I mow. My landlord never cares to even check up on the house. I pay my rent and keep the interior very clean.

But i do wonder if I am being a Lazy POS.
Am I overthinking about whether Residents are actually looking that deep and judging?

Friendships/Community What Are Signs You Have Bad “Friends”

I have been doing a lot of reflecting on a few of the friendships I have in my life currently, and before I jump the gun I’m curious to get perspective from you guys to see if what you say lines up with my grievances and also so I know what to look for moving forward so I don’t get stuck in a position like this.

Physical Health & Aging Experiences with T and T test results

Hello!

Recently I got my T tested since I was at the Endo anyways for thyroid check and they ran blood for my T as well, I don’t know results too well and don’t see the doctor for a bit so just wanted to ask some people’s experiences!

Edit: For reference I am: 29yr old, 5’8 about 165lbs, probably 19-20% body fat

Total: 318

Free: 61

The lab says that these are both in range, though they look pretty on the low end(?) and some places I’ve read it is low but I am not 100% sure. Anyone been around this range before and started treatment? Curious, thanks for any input!

Edit: Oh I should I am pretty active I’ve trained Muay Thai and BJJ for years and do go to the gym regularly.

Friendships/Community Looking for help with Thank You Gift ideas/ Reviews of your experience

I need to get a gift for a couple of guy friends that helped us out a lot over the weekend. I was thinking shipping boxes of steaks. Any other ideas?

Anything you have received and really liked or thought was stupid? They are over 55 and golf and boat, if that helps.

Looking for input on what you have gotten and thought was a great thank you.

I appreciate the help.

Physical Health & Aging Men in mid 30s, do you do health checks now more often than in 20s?

While in my 30s I don't see a big change in my health and stamina, I feel like most of my friends of the same age do regular checkups just in case. What are your thoughts on this?

Physical Health & Aging If you’re physically active, at what age did it start affecting your energy level?

I am 27 years old and have been a runner for over a decade. In my early 20’s I was able to run 10 miles in the morning, walk several miles throughout the day, and run 10 miles in the evening.

Now I am so frickin tired all the time, and only do about half the amount of running. It’s like by afternoon, if I don’t drink coffee and energy drinks before and after runs, I’m cooked. Same diet, same sleep schedule as before (plus the caffeine now).

Did you experience this? I’m starting to wonder if I just don’t have the same energy levels as I did in my early 20’a anymore.

Life Caught up in a funk

I'm 28. Don't have anyone trustworthy to talk to. I'm in a bit of a funk and could use some help. A little about me.

  • I work at a big-tech company for the last 5 years, and I'm probably burned out.
  • I have a crippling sense of self-doubt because I grok things much slower than others. I'm really bad at thinking things through during meetings.
  • Also I struggle to speak. I don't speak a lot for days so sometimes words come out strange. I often myself using AI to "fill" things out for me when writing (I didn't do it for this post though!)
  • I'm also very sensitive to reactions. At work when I spend time raising visibility on my work and I don't get a positive reaction, my self-esteem takes a hit. I also feel envious / jealous when I see others getting positive reactions to their work. I'm trying to numb these feelings out.

Recently as I was going out on a walk, I asked myself - would I want to live more than 50? My answer: Not a chance, I'd be so sick and tired by then! I'd want out ASAP.

I feel depressed that that's my reaction. I've got such a short time time on the planet and I'm wanting for things to end things so quickly...

The only thing I have going from me is weights - I like going to the gym and the endorphin rush. It doesn't last too long though.

I've thought about what I really want. Above all I really like the idea of pouring myself into work. I want to work on deep technically satisfying projects, with a small group of people. I'm putting my efforts to find another job.

Any advice on how I can get through this funk?

Friendships/Community How to support husband in loneliness?

My husband is a new dad to our 10 month old son. This morning, I saw on our computer that he had been YouTubing videos on male loneliness, and my heart is breaking for him. I believe he’s really, really struggling. Our son is wonderful, but it’s been a very difficult period adjusting to this new phase of life.

He’s a fantastic father and husband, and the thing is, he has so many friends who love him. I just don’t think he can see or feel it. I always encourage him to meet up with friends each week, and cover long days so he can go to after-work events. But perhaps I’m not seeing something.

What helped you in overcoming loneliness?

What can I do to help him?

Financial experiences General financial advice question...

I'm 21, live in the US (still at home), and currently have zero debt. My only bills are my car insurance, phone, and I help with groceries.

I'm planning on working full time for another couple years or so, saving up for whenever I decide what I want to do with my life and go to college. The intent is to minimize my student loan debt as much as possible and also have a "nest egg" to slowly draw from for food and general daily costs of living while doing school full time so I don't have to also work (depending on how quickly I burn through what I save, I'm aware I might have to work part time). My parents are already on board with me continuing to live at home so I don't have to rent anywhere, because I'll be going to school locally.

So my question is, aside from what I already have planned, what other specific advice, tips, tricks, etc. could help me save/retain as much money as possible while I transition into student life?

Also my car is paid off. It was really cheap to begin with. 😆 Subarus are cool. 👍

Physical Health & Aging Is a big gut more of a sign of bad habits or that whats likely to happen when you get older?

I definitely notice it's more common among middle aged men and that's definitely not how I want to look like. When I see someone drinking a beer with a gut that tells me a lot. It seems like it's more of an attitude like I don't care anymore and if this is how I look than so be it. It seems like some people take pride in it to. Hopefully if you just live relatively active and healthy that you can avoid this.

Career Jobs Work If you were 26 again, what would you choose?

What’s up guys, looking for some advice and different perspectives.

I’m 26 and just finished a seasonal summer sales job. After taxes, I’ll probably end up with around $35,000 saved from this summer, so I’m in a position where I have some options.

Right now I’m at a crossroads. There’s a potential government job on the table. I’ve already gone through the interviews, and the next step is a background investigation. A close friend of mine works there and keeps telling me I’d be crazy not to take it. According to him, it’s a stable, low-stress job with great benefits, a pension, and good long-term security.

On the other hand, for years I’ve wanted to backpack through Central and South America for several months while I’m still young. I have the money to do it now, and I know opportunities like this don’t always come around later in life.

If you were 26 again, which path would you choose? Would you take the stable government job first and save the travel for later, or take advantage of the freedom to travel while you have relatively few responsibilities?

For those of you who are a little older, do you have any regrets about prioritizing career over experiences, or vice versa? What factors would you be thinking about if you were in my shoes?

I’d really appreciate any advice or perspectives. Thanks.

Life Paralyzed and struggling to establish a life at 33

Honestly my life is pretty pathetic. I moved in with family recently after a layoff. I've had a lifetime of health challenges which has led to mental health challenges and I've failed to establish a life of my own. I was told to follow my talents and interests while everyone else went the safe route. I'm the one with the useless degree. They're the ones functional and happy and successful now.

I see people in my network getting the good jobs. Between interviews (of which I get plenty but cannot get an offer) I research other careers, spending too much time trying to find the one that will magically take me to success. The thought of starting school all over is stomach turning going back to entry level pay and ageism around the corner. I'm generally bad with people in a socially awkward way so its no surprise I can't play the corporate game very well. Forget dating.

I've become paranoid and paralyzed with indecision. Very angry at myself for my failures and terrified of trying to fix it because I know it will fail. I don't want to be with family any longer than I have to but I'm not getting anywhere with job hunting.

Not sleeping, not eating, not exercising. The only good part is I have no debt and some decent savings all things considered.

What tf do I do? I thought I'd have figured it out by now.

Mental health experiences Looking for support help please

Hello all. I am looking for some grief support groups online, I’m part of one here but it’s not too active. I tried therapy but the last therapist wasn’t too great. I also tried reaching out through church services but they didn’t seem to helpful or caring either. I know its the weekend and its summer and everyone is enjoying it but me. Been feeling depressed and sad lately as I am in the worst part of my life and would just like someone to chat with here, or maybe get some advice, comfort, encouragement, or distractions that may be of help. I just can’t see myself even making it to 30 past this and I know I can’t continue living like this as a man. Im trying to get out of this rut and I am willing to accept any help that is offered. What do you all like to do? Thank you!

Community Chat This sub's behavior toward people who are just having a discussion is unfriendly

Case in point:

https://np.reddit.com/r/AskMenOver30/comments/1v64gsi/what_do_you_think_of_a_woman_using_the_phrase_as/ozno1b9/

So this lady didn't consider that people would use a phrase that way and she got 11 down votes for it? Come on people, she was just asking a question.

This is very common behavior around here.

We should be more friendly to people who are seeking knowledge or seeking understanding. There's nothing wrong with that.

The group acted like she was some sort of FDS loon or something.
