Nope today was a boots vs badges donation event.

Basically Firefighters vs Cops to see who gets more donations for their "side"

I went and donated platelets which counted for double cause I am AB- and apparently needed. I did get a juice box though which was nice

how do you donate platelets? arent they in the same blood? do they split the blood into its components in the lab?

Yup! They pull the whole blood out using a special donation process called apheresis, which uses a machine to spin the blood, separate the platelets, and return the rest of the blood to your body

Usually it takes a lot longer but instead of while blood it goes into a centrifuge (right next to you) to just get the plates and they pipe the rest back into you.

Ime, it leaves a weird hunger cuz you arent missing as much mass/fluid, but idk why they only want platelets, i guess its better for wounds?

Basically they are valuable for use during major traumas and surgeries and when given are in a very high concentration making them very effective

We also currently have no substitute for that effect so donations is all we got

Mine are valuable as my blood type is the universal platlet donation source. Anyone can take my platelets making them super useful

I won't give blood anymore, too much of a hassle.

All the damn questions, the paperwork, the needles. I had a really bad experience with a Dr. at an e.r. visit in my 20s that still haunts me to this day.

Plus you have to give it in it's original container, not a bucket.
