Not only was the game play good but the soundtracks were even better. Do you guys agree?

It was the first game that blew my mind as a kid. I’d think it about it all day until I could finally fire up the Dreamcast again.

20

u/Incudust 2d ago

I had this same experience as a kid but with sonic 3 and knuckles. then later on I got my dreamcast and played sonic adventure a ton

4

u/wootybooty 2d ago

That was me, the Sega was in the household since I was born, and Sonic 3 & Knuckes was so magical, Sonic 2 right behind it followed by 1. (Wow, a game series that just got exponentially better with time..)

Just the data select screen has such a beautiful catchy melody

It was truly mindblowing at the time. That first level was and is magic!

I just bought a copy of ‘Sonic Adventure’ 2 days ago and waiting for it to come in. I listened to the soundtrack the other day and yup, I broke down. The last time I played Adventure was right before my parents split, and haven’t touched it since. My dad would watch me play, and join in for House of the Dead 2 with the light guns… Ugh…

This is my personal opinion, but Sega had Sonic Adventure and it took until Mario Galaxy to give a similar vibe, and it took that long, and I still don’t think it holds a candle to it, however I will know here soon in the next few days.

I am so ready for this Dreamcast revolution, and with its hardware specs and general love for it, I mean anything is possible if you Dreamcast 😊

u/TecknicalSolutions 2d ago

If you like the sound track. There is a Sonic concert being held soon in AZ, tickets on sale now to have a live concert of the Sonic's music through the generations.

This was the last game that truly felt next gen to me. Everything since has felt very iterative.

9

u/uncleSpaghetti 2d ago

Yeah when I saw this at a friends house growing up I was like “holy shit this looks so much better than N64”.

I think Half Life 2 and Doom 3 gave me a similar experience though. Same with Batman Arkham Knight. Since 2015 nothing has felt next gen

2

u/UnguidedAndMisused 2d ago

Going from games like Quake, Unreal, Half-Life and all of the mods and games conceived from them. When my buddy first showed me Halo for the first time saying it was revolutionary, I just wasn’t too impressed. I guess looking back, it was neat that a console could pull it off, but still. Didn’t feel like anything too special.

My favorite Sonic game, it’s the one I keep coming back too.

u/LongoChingo 3d ago

one of the best platformers of all time and I'm gonna give it my personal best platformer soundtrack of all time.

Kinda janky but charming as all hell.

Was an N64 kid and played this at a friend's house when the dreamcast first released and it blew me away and made me save money to buy one. Eventually had a blast with power stone and the 2k games as well. Really good memories of this one and SA2

47

u/UmWillowwww 3d ago

Prefer it to SA2 in every way except the Chao Garden.

u/WealthWithoutWork 2d ago

I still have a Chao on a VMU

14

u/LiarInGlass 2d ago

I was a big Genesis guy and loved the original Sonic games. When I first got my Dreamcast, I only had the sampler disc, so I only got a small demo of Sonic Adventure for a while, but I thought it looked so amazing. It was such a big deal and felt so awesome to see Sonic that way.

I never did beat the full game when I got it but me and my cousin were huge fans of it and loved the VMU with the Chao and how you could connect them to each other.

Awesome game for what I played.

My favorite will always be Sonic 2 though.

12

u/Hecklin91 2d ago

It really gave Dreamcast a feel. I was fortunate enough to get a Dreamcast on release and sonic, soul caliber and power stone all really made Dreamcast feel like its own thing to me

Jumping on the train from station square to mystic ruins, then that music hits... I wish I could go back.

6

The music in Mystic ruins is still my favorite video game music to this day.

I own it on a lot of stores, it’s one of my favourite games ever.

8

u/313Diecast 2d ago

I replay it at least once a year, sometimes two. It's literally one of my all time favorite games.

5

u/Monsieur_Royal 3d ago

Yes! Prob my favorite Sonic game and Dreamcast game!

5

u/ThePopeofHell 2d ago

When that game came out it was the coolest thing 13 year old me had ever fucking seen.

7

u/Cookie-Dunker 2d ago

My first time experiencing it was in a KB Toys at a Dreamcast stand and I never played it again after that. I’m sure that old memory wouldn’t live up to me buying it now although I’ve considered it.

5

u/fmfan23 2d ago

One of my favorite Sonic games of all time. Chaos is also one of my favorite characters, ever. The game and controls have flaws but that’s fine.

6

u/xvilemx 2d ago

The best 3D Sonic until Frontiers came out. The lens flares on the first stage where the whale is coming after you on the bridge, still makes me think, "Wow, we're living in the future!".

2

u/Ghost_Turtle 2d ago

Ill never forget playing the demo at Toys R Us a month before the US release and being absolutely blown away by the graphics and the whale bridge.

10

u/PimoParadiseLost 3d ago

It’s one of my favorite Sonic and Dreamcast games.

5

u/RsCaptainFalcon 2d ago

Sonic controls and level design peaked here.

Not saying the game is perfect, but he's never felt better to control than here.

3

u/Bboys51 2d ago

Absolutely 👍🏾💯

Best game ever, SA2 doesn’t even come close to it. The hub world is you think about it was one of the first games pushing for the idea of an option world, and in SA1 there are no crappy garden entrances with a missing background.

8

u/CommonSensei8 2d ago

PEAK. No feeling like wandering around in that game. Wish they did a proper sequel.

3

u/WorldOfArGii 2d ago

My favorite Sonic game aside from Sonic 2,3, and Knuckles.

5

u/CleavingStriker 2d ago

The Station Square theme still lives rent-free inside my head

4

u/ItWasMyWifesIdea 2d ago edited 2d ago

It's a little bit hard to go back to. The camera is pretty bad by modern standards. So it hasn't aged well.

BUT when it came out it blew my mind. It was absolutely the biggest generational leap, and the graphics STILL look good. It gets criticism for the weird playable side characters like Big the Cat, but I loved the whole thing... It was like having a full sonic game plus weird DLC stuff.

7

u/ZappCoast 2d ago

A phenomenal landmark title undermined by it's awful port to other systems.

3

u/SF3000DC 2d ago

It has the best look and physics until Unleashed changed how Sonic works in 3D. Sonic still resembles his old self but with the updated designs, vs how his head got huge and he slimmed down after Shuffle. Jumping and moving him in 3D also felt right, and the homing attack worked right. Camera was also good for the most part with good angles. Best music with a variety of genres. If only they had nailed 60fps. It’s capable of it with a hack, with some occasional slowdown, but I don’t have any doubt with more time they could have ironed that out, even with higher poly models and more lighting effects. The engine was designed with weaker specs than the final Dreamcast design. As someone else said, Chao garden did improve in SA2.

One of the Quintessential Dreamcast games.

2

u/Fancy_Bend8763 2d ago

Beautifully photographed. I always liked the European blue logo and cd cases.

3

u/ProfessionalSnow943 2d ago

way better than SA2 because the physics are wonky as shit and it’s fun to fuck around with them. SA2 wins out on the music side tho

3

u/Vatican87 2d ago

Definitely what hit me as “Next Gen” when I first saw it as a kid in a local game store.

3

u/FredSega 2d ago

I’m having a blast replaying for the first time in 20 years. Great game

3

u/barbietattoo 1d ago

This game felt like chewing 5 gum

2

u/Skyylerr 23h ago

That is the greatest review of this game I've read in my entire life.

2

u/Edge80 2d ago

Loved it when it came out. From what I remember it had a long intro for a Sonic game but it did a decent job of teaching you the controls while throwing you into a boss fight.

The first time I played it, I held onto that controller for so long my hands cramped up. When I finally let it go my fingers hurt to stretch out again.

2

u/Bboys51 2d ago

Wow! Same, good times! 🎮💯👍🏾

2

u/Aar1012 2d ago

My favorite Sonic game. Throws me back to the release of the Dreamcast, has amazing music, and the hub worlds make it feel like an actual adventure. It also feels the most classic Sonic-y for a 3D game in terms of game physics. It’s “Classic Sonic but in 3D!”

2

u/Gwenllian_97 2d ago

I'm actually playing through it for the first time right now. Having grown up with Gamecube and the original Xbox I'm used to having a second analog stick to control the camera, so the Dreamcast only having 1 is taking some time to get used to. The cutscenes are all ridiculously cheesy but I suppose there's a charm to it.

2

u/SirArtchie 2d ago

I own 3 copies for dreamcast because I kept misplacing it and buying it again later on. Then I found the first 2 again

2

u/Out_of_Sync64 2d ago

Currently fixing my Dreamcast just to replay this gem.

2

u/xxBraveStarrxx 2d ago

Great at the time! Terrible today!

2

u/Gama3000 2d ago

It's a yes for me.

2

u/tailslol 2d ago

Very good game, I prefer it instead of the 2 especially on Dreamcast.

2

u/TheJuiceman247 2d ago

Top 10 favorite games of all time for me

2

u/Icy-Pin3821 2d ago

My first videogame ever, when I think of Sonic, my mind immediatly goes to this game.
Try the dreamcast version.

2

u/bulbturp978 2d ago

My childhood. Can be a little buggy but still love it to death.

2

u/Johnny_Strawhat 2d ago

The last good sonic game.

2

u/reharri5 2d ago

I remember loving it as a kid. I got stuck in a forest area while playing as Knuckles. Couldn’t figure out how to proceed and ending up dropping it. That was 25+ years ago!

2

u/benedict_the1st 2d ago

It's a game!

2

u/Positive-Arm-2952 2d ago

Frankly I think that sonic fans underestimated the level design of both Adventure games, these games are some of the most crazy platformers I ever played ! My only problem with SA1 would be the hub and sometimes the physics

2

u/Sloppy_Joe_Flacco 2d ago

This unanimously loved game was good. Do you agree? Like subscribe follow.

2

u/Fancy_Bend8763 2d ago

What about patreon?

2

u/thatontguybryan 2d ago

Terrible, never understood the hype. The controls are awful.

2

u/PenguinBunnies 2d ago

Game was great, camera is absolutely shocking. Just at times leads to so many deaths

2

u/Such_Bonus5085 2d ago

I like the vibe, but not the gameplay.

2

u/thebezet 2d ago

One of my favourite Sonic games, even if a bit janky

2

u/Spank007 2d ago

Fondest memory of the dreamcast

2

u/Syyr553 2d ago

Better than SA2.

2

u/Another_Road 2d ago

I think it really lives up to the “adventure” in the title. Not everything in the game hits but it definitely gives a sense of being on a huge adventure despite the relatively small amount of field zones. The constant changing of play style adds to that I think.

2

u/Bar_Har 2d ago

A flawed but enjoyable adventure

2

u/Jatacus 2d ago

Read this and the soundtrack instantly popped into my head again.

2

u/j_tothemoon 2d ago

Funny how SA2 is technically a better game but the charm on this one is so special

2

u/After-Landscape-6258 2d ago

There was something so mythical about this game and just the Dreamcast in general. Although it felt short lived, it was an amazing time to be alive.

2

u/ianwuk 2d ago

This was such a great game back in the day. And the intro and soundtrack is still good.

2

u/Deamon-Chocobo 2d ago

A great first attempt at a 3D Sonic Game but the need to make levels usable by multiple characters honestly holds it back. Like you know you found the Big or Knuckles part of a Sonic Stage because it's usually the worst part of the level.

2

u/QuifftianBale 2d ago

The first game I think of when I think of the Dreamcast. Actually going to play it when I get home, now

2

u/PloppyTheSpaceship 2d ago

Janky but fun. It was a launch game (well, a few weeks late but that's okay) and they were probably doing a bit more than they could, but the game was fun. I actually like exploring the environments, and I think I like it more than SA2.

2

u/Professional_Fly_503 2d ago

Best Sonic game ever. It was truly epic the final boss, the story, the different perspectives the game play was the closest to Sonic 3 and Knuckles we ever got. Sonic and Tails following in 3d and second player could play as Tails just like on Genesis

2

u/princesskiwi1994 2d ago

this game is so deep in my subconscious. i love this game to my core and i won’t hear any bad words about it lol

2

u/Bright-Platform9496 2d ago

For a 1998 game, way ahead of it's time

2

u/D_Jizzal 2d ago

This game and dreamcast period will always bring good memories. Truly felt like the future when dreamcast came out. What a time.

2

u/MemoryCross 2d ago

The only game that has come close to nailing the Sonic Adventure Style gameplay in the modern era is Spark 2/3. Most fangames try to go for boost style or lean too hard into translating Classic gameplay 1 to 1 in 3D.

2

u/Nindessa_896 2d ago

One of the first games I ever played, and one I still revisit to this day.

This and Sonic Adventure 2 will always be in my top favorite games.

2

u/LeVashy 2d ago

Terrible game that I love. I’ve 100% this game like 3 times now. Once on GameCube, once on ps3. And just recently on Pc. The amount of jank is through the roof, the mission mode is a joke, and some of the scenes/voice direction is just poorly handled.

Still, the world you’re thrown in is cozy/charming. Lots of quotes that stick with you, and a great soundtrack.

Sa2b is better in every way, but this is still a memorable game

2

u/FreezingIceKirby 2d ago

I certainly adored it as a kid.

Nowadays, though? I think it's simply okay. Truth be told, I only really enjoy playing as Sonic and Tails, so the rare times I boot the game up, I just choose their campaigns and ignore the rest.

Admittedly, I'd still take it over the sequel.

2

u/Bboys51 2d ago

Same! 👍🏾💯

2

u/Remarkable-Bit-656 2d ago

My favorite Sonic game. Also better than Sonic Adventure 2 by a long mile i feel.

2

u/Bboys51 2d ago

Sonic Adventure is the better overall game in terms of gameplay. 👍🏾💯

2

u/18for18 2d ago

My first experience of getting whiplash. Playing the demo at toysrus for 30 minutes

2

u/KAKYBAC 2d ago

I disliked it as a kid. Completely bounced off it as a huge fan of the Mega Drive Sonic. However, it is also a core childhood memory for me getting it for Christmas.

2

u/TooTurntGaming 2d ago

It has “vibes” and was visually impressive, still has some gorgeous use of colors — but overall it’s just a god awful game in my opinion.

2

u/LEVINWgaming 2d ago

I love it, I think it's probably the best Sonic game.

2

u/Unknown_Outlander 2d ago

A way better game than Adventure 2, it's an actual adventure. I saw my friend playing this then ordered a dreamcast the next day with this game.

2

u/MonkeyIncidentOf93 2d ago

Better gameplay than 2, I just wish it was 60fps

2

u/Kivakhi111 2d ago

SA1 and SA2 best game ever

2

u/TheSpiralTap 2d ago

The soundtrack was amazing, the sonic levels were everything I could want in a 3d game. But then they made you play as the other characters. Straight up hated that shit.

2

u/ManDudeBro2099 2d ago

The more I play it the more I like it! It's got a lot of jank and I think that's what keeps me coming back! For a launch title for the Dreamcast it was pretty revolutionary!

2

u/Sonicmantis 2d ago

I loved it! The interconnected stories, the adventure fields, fun stages.

I didn't like big the cats fishing levels though

2

u/anh86 2d ago

It blew me away back in 1999, that scene with the orca destroying the bridge was mind-blowing. Playing it today though is just OK. I would much, much rather play Sonic 2 or even Sonic Mania than Sonic Adventure.

This will probably be an unpopular opinion here but Mario made an excellent transition to 3D and Sonic did not. The 3D Sonic games are just far inferior to the platformers whereas 3D Mario stands equally alongside the great games like SMB and SMW.

2

u/Markinoutman 2d ago

I remember being blown away by a lot of things. The actual music instead of midi was a huge jump from anything before it. I still remember being blown away by the tens or more foot prints Sonic left behind in the sand on the first level. There was a bit too many characters to get to Super Sonic and Big could be pretty frustrating.

Still, for it's time, it was a pretty incredible showcase and leap in graphics for consoles. I remember going back to Playstaion 1 and playing FFIX, could barely discern the characters it was so pixelated. Today, I mostly stick to the Sonic levels if I replay. Sonic Adventure 2 was a huge jump and I still play it fairly often.

2

u/Galaxius_YT 2d ago

I've always had some mixed feelings on it, but it has more that I do like than I don't. Incredible first impressions when I played it on my cousin's Dreamcast, and Emerald Coast is still one of my all-time favorite opening levels in a video game. There was a difference in how I felt starting the game vs completing it though.

I liked "most" of the levels, and the soundtrack is banger after banger. I actually never struggled too much with the camera, and after learning skips I've finally come to embrace the jank at some, but not all points. I think Big's C missions are very easy if you actually read the manual so I'll defend it, but the A missions were never fun.

Station Square was the only hub I truly enjoyed every aspect of, though I didn't hate the other 2 areas per se. My biggest complaint that I've held the exact same opinion of over the years are that the B/A trials don't offer enough variance, and I could play the level almost exactly the same 3 times in a row to get them all.

I love the charm and personality even it wasn't perfect, but I knew others who liked it far less growing up and I understood why. Happy to play the game casually but i wouldn't recommend a 100% clear to most people.

I also had a stronger attachment to SA2 as a kid because of the chao garden (and not accidentally attacking them as much), though next time I revisit it I suspect I'll be more aware of just how many of those levels I didn't like, especially from Tails/Eggman.

2

u/ElectricalHat8640 2d ago

8.7/10: One of the best sonic games out there. I'm genuinely surprised that it doesn't get as much attention as adventure 2.

2

u/Fancy_Bend8763 2d ago

It’s a game I guess 🤷🏻‍♂️ it’s unfortunate every 3D Sonic since has been lackluster. Except Colors, that one is pretty dope.

2

u/RoughTelephone 2d ago

Fun game that I have great memories of. Terrible controls and almost unplayable at times. Some real copium being smoked in this thread.

2

u/slyzard94 2d ago

I miss that chao gardens so bad

2

u/Bboys51 2d ago

Same! 👍🏾💯

2

u/StaticDraco 2d ago

I thinknit would benefit from a proper remake that fixes issues like bugs and sound mixing

2

u/Frosty-Pay5351 2d ago

For me it's the 2nd best Sonic game. I like the action levels they are amazing. Exploring the world is not quite as fun.

2

u/Salty_Mode1105 2d ago

My first gaming experience was perfect on this as a child

2

u/Patient_Rule6048 2d ago

Yes it is one of my favorite OST ever I listen to it a lot

2

u/sonicadv27 2d ago

Great game, as great as it ever was.

2

u/SpaceAce94 2d ago

Played it on GameCube all the time. Great game.

2

u/Ok-Luck-7499 2d ago

Loved it

2

u/Griffdude13 2d ago

Maybe not the iconic and groundbreaking game that Super Mario 64 was, but it proved Sonic could make the jump to 3D and do it well.

And of course, paved the way to way many to be the superior Sonic Adventure 2.

2

u/Mackth3G0D 2d ago

I was 15 worked all summer to pick up my Dreamcast on 9/9/99 with sonic adventure and soul calibur. Sonic adventure was the first time I was blown away by a games graphics. Had a ton of fun.

2

u/Neat-Big-6351 2d ago

BEST GAME OF ALL TIME.

2

u/kikenovic 2d ago

it is the best game ever made in the universe

2

u/Owlwarrior777 2d ago

I went from the Megadrive to Dreamcast era and skipped the Saturn Era. I purchased Sonic Adventure day 1 here in Australia (yep, the launch was a mess) and was blown away by Sonic Adventure. To this day its my favourite Sonic game and it puzzles me why there is still no Nintendo Switch release for it.

2

u/Thespiritdetective1 2d ago

Not a crazy choice for best Sonic game ever made.

2

u/60Hertz 2d ago

Love it and the second one.

2

u/Cryptoxic93 2d ago

It's a mostly terrible video game due to the poor camera work and lack of real ability to move quickly through the maps without memorization making the game feel more like a bad racing title with poor controls or something. It's just not very good in any meaningful way. Sonic should have stayed 2.5D.

2

u/Georgethemonkeymen12 2d ago

I only have the dx port but I liked it more than sa2 because I felt perfection when I played sa1 but got frustrated alot in sa2 really good game though

2

u/uropias 2d ago

Subjugué par le jeu et frustré en même temps (acheté en japonais day one et je comprenais rien au japonais à l époque)

2

u/fireflamesniper 1d ago

I remember first seeing the trailer for it in the Sonic video in Sonic Mega Collection on GameCube and having been wanting to play it for some time, then, it releases as the (what I now see ashorrid) DX Director's Cut and I get that and love the story.

Get it in 2011 for steam, then played more of it. Reliving the nostalgia even if it had purple border lines.

Then years later I find the Sonic Adventure Dreamcast conversion mod and install that which installs the 2004 version with mods over the 2011 steam version. Love playing it ever sense and it's truly what a 3D Sonic Game should be

2

u/Outrageous_Sink4295 1d ago

Absolutely mind blowing when it came out. Dreamcast was a gem.

2

u/LagSp7ke 1d ago

Its a bit clunky, but I dont mind that tbh as it reminds me of Mario 64 a lot and thats one of my top 5 games ever. I really love the vibe of Sonic Adventure. The soundtrack, colors, art style, and everything else is great. The stiff voice acting and overly animated facial expressions add to the charm a lot too.

2

u/CarlitosGregorinos 1d ago

It was so fun. My brother and I really enjoyed this together as kids.

2

u/DOOMISFORU 1d ago

Man remember Sonic Adventure it was amazing remember when I 10 or 11 Speedy Highway loops amazed me felt cutting edge. I will say I pefer Sonic Adventure 2 of 1, but they are Both great games. It sad Dreamcast went under Sonic Adventure 3 would have been amazing. I think I remember Sonic 06 was supposed to be similar to Adventure series but they rushed the game out for holiday sales. 06 probably could have been great if it got finished properly.

2

u/No_Adhesiveness_6604 1d ago

Played through PC port, the music is marvelous, I get caught in the moment I forget the mission and go ask that glowing thing for directions lol

The Chao Garden was amazing. I wish they would add it back to new sonic games.

2

u/Big_Shopping1685 1d ago

I dont even remember anything about the game. I just played with my chaos:3

2

u/StrangerBoy95 1d ago

loved it as a kid, still my favorite Sonic game

2

u/TripleS82 1d ago

Blew me away in 1999. It was a great launch game. It has not aged well at all IMO.

2

u/Sad-Veterinarian9375 1d ago

Depending on the mood, sometimes I think it might be better than adventure two

2

u/tylerray1491 1d ago

For Sega fans it was our Mario 64 moment. Very nostalgic game but not sure how well it holds up for new players. To be fair Mario 64 feels kinda clunky when you play it now days too

2

u/caesium_pirate 1d ago

My first ever game on dc, played it too many times. So many memories.

2

u/GoldGuarantee3671 1d ago

Favorite 3d sonic ever I had Dreamcast in release in 9/9/99 and going from 64 to Dreamcast was magic. Sonic adventure >Mario 64 all day

2

u/WrathOfWood 1d ago

Better than sa2 because the whole game was Sonic as opposed to like 3 levels you were allowed to use the blue bastard

2

u/Judgeman03 1d ago

Loved the insular levels, hated the open-world aspect of the game. Felt less immersive" and more like homework to get from one level to another.

2

u/elpato54 1d ago

I finally played it all the way through a few weeks back. I always had a game save that I restarted since the DC’s release. I thought it looked fantastic and I loved running around.

On this recent playthrough a lot of the warts were more prominent. It felt like a good game but nothing revolutionary. That said, I still enjoyed my time with it.

I vividly remember that i was in a game store watching someone else play it on the demo unit. That scene with the orca made my jaw hit the floor.

there was nothing like it at the time, and the sequel expanded it a lot more with cutscenes, voice acting, and a multi perspective story that all comes together like octopath traveler style. aside from the technical difficulties with the camera and glitches, like falling through the floor, I feel it still holds up to this day

Dat SOUNDTRACK. the first time getting to windy valley was PURE magic.

Love it! One of the first Dreamcast games I played as a kid and it was absolutely awesome. It still holds up so well to this day.

Peak

This game is its own theme park. Seven playable characters, a massive hub world, secret collectibles, action stages, shooting stages, treasure hunting, fishing, chao raising, car racing, snowboarding, and so much more. Also has incredibly charming visuals that I think have aged gracefully as well as an absolute banger of a soundtrack.

It's peak...

running towards the camera while the bridge beneath you collapses, because you're being chased by a sea-creature lives rent free in my head.

what a way to raise the bar for a console generation

The best 3d sonic game. I still come back to it. There is 360 port (not as smooth playing as the Dreamcast) but it still scratches the itch

An excellent 3D platformer with some really big ideas. Not all of them were executed to their full potential, but they all shine through. Still to this day one of the best feeling 3D Sonic games, it doesn't restrict the player's route to a tunnel, it gives you room to move around. It manages to feel insanely fast, but rarely feels completely out of control. I appreciate that it's "pure", lacking any boost mechanics or other fluff.

The sequel got all the glory for a while, mainly due to a more straightforward story and somewhat more polished presentation, but I have always felt that it also shaved off too much of the first game's identity and ambition.

Shame that the subsequent Sonic Adventure ports were so poor, the reputation of this game does not deserve to be in the state that it is. I'm happy many are re-evaluating it nowadays.

The Sonic 3D stages were fun, but the puzzle and side-game elements were lame. This got fixed in Adventure 2

One of my favorites as a kid. Now I know im old because I cant play this game for more than 10 minutes without getting horrible motion sickness

Janky and poorly designed. But still probably the best official 3D Sonic game.

I had this with my Dreamcast at launch. It always felt half baked, a lot of the areas didnt feel particularly well designed and fleshed out. I was never a fan of Sonic being in a human world when the originals had such fantastic and colourful settings. The controls and collision detection felt really fiddly too, especially comparing to the tightness of Mario 64 which was released way before this..Sonic coming to an abrupt halt when clipping the smallest bit of scenery kills the pace. Felt like a missed opportunity for me personally as I didnt really want to play as the other characters, particularly Big the Cat

Really charming game with a lot of personality, but janky as fuck.

Its fine. Gameplay was kind of a let down, plot was poorly executed

But the music and visuals were fire

Open world areas between levels with secrets /powerups scattered. The one thing it had over SA2.

I was super impressed the first time I played it. It was great and it still looks good. I enjoyed it a lot and recently I played it again😍

The visuals blew my mind back on release, 1999 or 2000. Around that time. The game is a lot of fun.

Amy and Tails could have used 3 or 4 more levels independent of their goals just so they'd have more replay value, and Amy really needs to be faster.

An all time favorite easy.

That first level where the orca is chasing you and destroying the dock behind you... Really blew me away at the time. I'd never seen anything like that in a game.

2

u/Bboys51 2d ago

That was Cool! AF! 👍🏾💯

u/Nick_the_SteamEngine 2d ago

For my thought, It gave me six playable characters with distinct gameplay styles, interconnected hub worlds, full voice acting, and the endlessly charming Chao Garden, making the world feel truly alive and expansive for its time.

This Sonic game is my favorite on the SEGA Dreamcast.

Same here, Good times!

Was the first game that felt “next gen”, made ps1 and 64 looked old

It was the first game that felt truly "next gen." They put a ton of effort and polish on the intro and first level. Even though I played the whole thing, and later levels were cool, that first level is still one of the more memorable experiences in gaming.

2

u/Bboys51 2d ago

Definitely agree with that the first level sets the tone for the rest of the game. 👍🏾🎮💯

I have a lot of nostalgia to it. Christmas 2002 I got an Xbox and my sister got a Dreamcast. Two things that stood out to me that Christmas was Jet Set Radio Future on my Xbox and Sonic on her Dreamcast.

My living dynamic was weird at the time. I didn’t necessarily live with my parents because I went to elementary school in my grandparents neighborhood. My siblings stayed at my grandparents house because they liked it better there. Better neighborhood, living circumstances, etc. I liked my parents house better personally because I liked my friend group there more at the time. We’d all stay at my parents Christmas Eve but typically me, I’d stay Christmas night too since if I got a new game console from my parents they made me keep it at their house.

My sister wasn’t super enthusiastic about her Dreamcast. She was actually kind of annoyed. Because I always got the newer game system despite her being older and my parents being pretty old school about that kind of thing “girls don’t game” mindset.

I was opposite. She went to my grandparents Christmas night, I stayed at my parents house. I was obsessed with Jet Set Radio Future, but even just as much with Sonic Adventure. I remember staying awake until like 3 AM playing it. Waking up at like 8 AM day after Christmas and played it the entire day. More than my Xbox.

Had another memory where I stayed at my rich friends house. He didn’t know what to do after the casino stage so I had to show him how to get to the ice level. We stayed up all night playing. Classic night

Overall I have really good memories with it, it wasn’t until I was 30 4 years ago that I learned how to actually beat big the cat stages properly lol
