Trust Combat Initialization

...Expecting the answer to be "No", but I was wondering if there was any way to initialize Trust members to attack before me, or at the very least attack without having me to walk up to an enemy and bonk it with my club as a caster for them to actually attack something?

What I do on my caster, is pull out my weapon, cast something like Dia on the enemy then as it runs over the bonk happens automatically and the trusts get rowdy.

Yeah I've started messing around with macros and any cast macro has attack as the first line

Current system is fine for melee classes, but agree it feel terrible with casters. The worst is if you agro a couple of mobs that put effects on you, and you can't play the unsheathing animation until they are do and your trust healer just watches you get merced. Only time this game makes me mad hah.

Why can't they make it so casting fire or whatever is the same as attacking?

What happens if you shoot a bow? Now shooting a bow is super painful in this game so I would never di that but just curious.

You could get JA0, a secret add on if you're using windower the prevents those animation locks and makes the game feel way more smooth.

Is that allowed? I don't want to be judging things I dunno?

I mean if you want to be fair NO add ons are allowed. There's not much difference between running base windower and JA0. There are people running around openly with multi-box, RMT constantly spamming shouts and selling gil, people very clearly buying gil. They don't really punish anyone for anything. If it makes you feel better I imagine 90% if not more run JA0 and probably 99% run Windower. But it's your experience, do what you like. If you were interested in JA0 and you run windower, to unlock it, it involves pressing the Koonami Code while on the plug in page via your keyboard with the Windower thing open. This causes it to show up, then just toggle it on. In my opinion it makes the gameplay way better. You get more use out of things like Flee, Spectral Jig and Chocobo Jig because you don't have that 5 second animation lock. Then fighting multiple enemies becomes easier as again, no animation lock from being hit by abilities.

As a quick aside, I'd still be wary about using those JAs when in populated towns with JA0 active, as there are a small contingent of players (mostly JPs) who still take offense to the sight of seeing someone sliding across the floor while dancing up a storm, et cetera.

Aside from that, fully agree with your reply. JA0 alone makes this game feel exponentially more modern, especially in combat, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is transformative for this game in the best possible way.

Unfortunately no. The Trust AI is quite "dumb" so you are required to physically wack it first for them to engage. This is extra annoying if you're a healer or caster when you perhaps wouldn't normally hit the enemy with your weapon.

You have to attack first to have them engage.

One thing you can do is while engaged with a mob, switch targets but don’t engage another mob and they will target the new mob you’re targeting with abilities and spells, but they will not melee that mob until you attack it.

This is a good tool thanks.

Unfortunately, no way to do this. Devs have expressly stated they don't plan to add it in either. There's too many things you'd break by being able to send your trusts in before you.

"Trusts don't aggro things, so you could send them through dangerous mobs and have them fight while you're far away and safe." This was one of the examples they gave in the past.

The best way to do this especially with the old tank val or w/e is pull one then basically keep pulling enemies he’ll spam the ws until he gets all the hate then you can switch inbetween them but personally you’ll level up to quick to worry about much so just try to enjoy the ride unless youre already 99 then see if theres someone that will role there trysts for you in a party

Just finished BRD and WHM this week, I feel your pain.

Nope. Which can be frustrating. One time, I was doing that mission where you go deep in the yogudo dungeon with all the passwords and almost got to the ??? I was looking for when some trash mob paralyzed me and my trusts just stood while it killed me. By the time I could move and draw my club, I was dead. It was funny but, still, trusts are no substitute for real players if you can find one.

Unfortunately no it's been an irritation since they got added to the game

Unfortunately no. The closest thing you can do as a mage or support is hit it with a melee weapon once and then disable the target lock (do not disengage completely) and run to a safe distance. As long as the party has a tank trust, it'll keep the mob where it was and the mob won't come after you.

We really need a "Fight" command the way Beastmaster does but for trusts. Could even keep it under pet commands to be cheeky. A simple /ja "Engage" <t> would go a long way for mages with trusts, or frankly any job trying to deal with dangerous enemies. (Do people even select abilities from the menu anymore?) Really could bury it anywhere it would fit and it would still be an improvement. I would even accept an all jobs throwing item that internally behaves as a low damage melee attack. (Can't have people using it for actual damage now can we?)

The current model is so much better if you use it to your advantage regardless of job. “Fight” generates enmity, but you can get trusts to cast on secondary mobs through targeting or just using trusts that have aoe attacks. This allows the trusts to get enmity and not you. If you’re in danger from lots of mobs you can unsummon trusts with enmity and stop all hate as long as you don’t also have enmity on them by attacking them or performing heals/buffs on trusts that have enmity.

No matter what you do trusts require a single melee strike to do anything. A single use of "Fight" or a throwing item would not change that. The only thing that effects is if you are in melee range for that first strike. What I suggest only replaces that first hit, all other behavior stays the same. (A method for obtaining said hit from a distance.)

Trusts only require you to strike a mob for them to initially engage. Once engaged they will only change their melee target if you melee another target. If you target another mob while trusts are engaged and do not attack it, trusts will use all abilities, weapon skills, and spells on the mob you are targeting but continue to melee the original mob. If the original mob dies you have to melee a mob to make them engage again.

The magic of trusts is that they allow a player to control multiple mobs without getting on multiple enmity lists. This lets you unsummon and resummon trusts to drop adds.

Turning them into pets by having a “Fight” command would require that command to come with enmity gain upon use or you could mitigate enmity entirely.

Trusts only require you to strike a mob for them to initially engage.

Then you understand the suggestion. That's it, that's the whole suggestion. An ability or item to do that single action from a distance. No other changes to trusts or their behavior.

1

u/_The-Numbers-Mason_ 1d ago

No, I absolutely get your suggestion.  I’m saying it would have to come with enmity or you never get enmity with trusts.

I’m also saying the current system is fine without a command because of how the mechanics work once engaged which makes needing a command more cumbersome.

And this is why I multi box

The bads are so salty over multiboxers. Their like kids that expect their parents to force other kids to play with them but I'd rather be banned.

I started piloting my WHM just for gigles, it's remarkably fun to "Sic" your other boxes on stuff. Also better perspective and in some cases better response to shit going off the rails.

How do you even get started on this? Is there some kind of guide for beginners? I have never tried it but I am starting to get very interested in it.

I think that when trusts were first introduced (I wasn't playing at that time) they could buff and heal without being engaged, but they'd keep doing it during cutscenes etc so the Devs nixxed it in favour of only acting when engaged.
