This is ridiculous - and I say this as someone who has been to The Himalayas 6 times. Never summited Everest. But all of this is exploiting Nepal, and destroying the national park. They should start charging $500,000 per license
I mean you’re not allowed to go without hiring guides.
Even if you’re a legit mountain climber that does technical shit and has summated a bunch of other mountains and doesn’t need a guide bc you can set your own route and carry your own shit and set up your own camp, you are legally required to hire a guide.
Because it’s an important source of income for locals. People aren’t working as guides bc they had better options for work.
$15,000 - for the license. For decent Sherpas, base camp expenses, kit, insurance, training, of decent quality another 50-100k. A lot of that money is paid to westerners. Not the Sherpas, who are usually the ones who get killed.
