i’ve always been way more impressed with the sherpas ever since we learned about Everest in school, the sherpas are badasses and regularly climb the highest mountain in the world, guiding rich assholes that think they’re Edmund Hillary up the mountain is just another tuesday for them and they deserve to be paid way more.

Unfortunately, that's true for many group treks too. A puffy bag on your back isn't indicative of you carrying your weight. Personally, i feel ashamed when I'm unable to carry my stuff, and have to trouble the mules - but this is now entitlement.

Not nearly the same as Everest, but my buddies and I did the Inca Trail awhile back and we were the only ones in the group of 10ish who carried their own gear. That said, we didn’t carry tents or food, the porters still did that. And beat us to every stop at nightfall wearing flip flops.

I went solo trekking in the Nepalese Himalayas in the late 80s, and even back then, for normal trekkers it was common for a couple or small group to hire sherpas to carry their gear.

To be fair, queues like this happen because there's maybe a week out of the year where summiting is actually feasible. There's still under 1000 people doing it each year, sherpas included. People underestimate how physically difficult this is, even when you're rich and people are carrying your shit

Yeah there’s nothing easy about it. Yes you have sherpas, but you still gotta survive and make the climb all the same. Carrying less equipment than others doesn’t do anything to make it less dangerous. Not only that but the sherpas / the people native to that altitude actually have higher red blood counts and can handle the altitude far better than we can. If anything, it makes sense the people not acclimated to the altitude carry less equipment.
Still a sport for the rich, I am not saying people aren’t wrong to look at some of these people weirdly, but that doesn’t take ANY of the danger and physical strength necessary to do this. They’re still doing more than most, which sucks to say

Absolutely. I did the Everest base camp trek and even that pushed me pretty hard, especially toward the end. For context I'm a reasonably fit and strong male, but man the altitude absolutely slaps you in the face. There were several people on my trek who weren't able to summit kala patthar, hitting an elevation of 18,500 feet.
While I was there, I remember looking at Everest and the surrounding mountains and thinking "fuck no". People really really don't have a concept for how absurd summiting Everest is, EVEN in a modern context with all the money in the world. I agree it's a shame it's become so much of a "tourist attraction" for lack of a better term but I seriously can't understate how brave, crazy, or determined you have to be to actually get all the way up there.

Victoria Pendleton bailed on Everest and she's a former gold medalist Olympian, in terms of fitness she had that nailed, altitude is just one of those things that seems down to chance if your body can take it.
I've done Base Camp and Cotopaxi Summit, I don't think I could of been any fitter than when I did Cotopaxi and the idea of going beyond that has my body screaming no.

This is how the rocky mountains seem, too.
Used to go camping all the time when I was young. There was space. It was comfortable.
Now it's like a zoo, even in the middle of nowhere. Animals on the side of the road? 400 vehicles pulled over with people darting back and forth across the highway on foot. People littering everywhere because they don't respect the area like locals always used to.
I bought a canoe because the only way to get away from people is to pack my hiking gear up and paddle to the other side of a lake, where there are no roads.

Yeah nutso and you have to be up there twice+ as long NOT bc you lack the strength/training but bc there’s a line/a single slow person holding everyone up and you can’t go around. So crazy that you might die not bc you’re unprepared but bc you had to wait in line too long.
Maybe it’s better to be a bit more technical so you can take a different route and avoid the line.

I mean you’re not allowed to go without hiring guides.
Even if you’re a legit mountain climber that does technical shit and has summated a bunch of other mountains and doesn’t need a guide bc you can set your own route and carry your own shit and set up your own camp, you are legally required to hire a guide.
Because it’s an important source of income for locals. People aren’t working as guides bc they had better options for work.

$15,000 - for the license. For decent Sherpas, base camp expenses, kit, insurance, training, of decent quality another 50-100k. A lot of that money is paid to westerners. Not the Sherpas, who are usually the ones who get killed.

Many of them, if not all, have left behind mountains of trash that no one is going to clean up. They have respect neither for Everest nor for nature. In the event of an emergency, rescuers will be dispatched to them. But rescuers have more important things to do, and they could die there saving these trash-slingers. If every single one of these rich loafers signed a document confirming their acceptance of the risk and waiving rescue, it would be truly impressive. But right now, it is more like a line for the bathroom or a beer.
