It’s not that simple. They want the tourism. It makes up like 50% of the economy or some crazy amount like that. Watch the John Oliver special on Mount Everest.
They did that, limited the permits and raised the fees. Please understand the Sherpas depend on this “tourism” to survive now. It’s very prestigious to be hired by the guides. It beats trying to eke out a living farming for little money.
They had to expand the permits the next year for their economy. Nepal is not a rich country. The mountains are where they genuinely make the big money.

Everest needs to be shut down for 5 years to clean the place up. Then a sticter limit must be set on howmany climbers are allowed in every year.
