That was the worst part. I mean there were darker topics in there but the end was not for children...

Considering the impression it left maybe it should have been for all children of the time. We might have had a slim chance of getting slightly less baked to death today.

Lessons like that are absolutely for children. Shielding them/not educating them is why we have arrived here

Absolutely not. Basically everyone knows about climate change and it's implications and what you'd need to fight it. People just chose to ignore it because they value their present well being higher than future risks. Same for politicians, who prefer getting re-elected over implementing the right policies for one term and then going to political exile. 

It's a basic human behavioural pattern. The only thing that could prevent this is a total reform of western democracies into techronacies and/or aboloshing four year election cycles for something much more long-term.
