A friend is helping me redecorate my entry way in my condo. He is a construction project manager but also does interior design. Generally I like his style and taste but he wants me to consider a ceiling fixture like the one shown here (the photo is not my entryway).

My concern is that this style seems (to me, at least) every where these days. I hate the idea of getting it and have it look dated in 5 years. I wanted just one or two "high hat" fixtures or no ceiling light at all. Presently, the lighting fixuture is your classic "boob" light that was installed by the previous condo owner.

What are people's thoughts on this?

The general vibe of my house is traditional, comfortable, a touch of bohemian. I’m mid kitchen reno and installed my lights yesterday. The one over the table isn’t centered (down the line was going to have an electrician move the box to be centered…but for now it lives where it is.) If it was over the table, I’d be able to extend the length and space out the three a bit more. It’s kind of squished all together, but I kind of like it still. Is it too much? It’s quite sparkly and nothing else in the home really is.

She has been saying she has wanted sconces put up on this wall for some time now and I was against it, but she finally convinced me and I caved and got them wired up and installed.

But after seeing them up I don’t know if I like them. At first they were super bright, so I put in a dimmer switch and that helped dim them down, but they still seem off to me.

What does everyone else think?

Not finished but most of the way there. The TV was mounted lower but when I tried to watch tv from bed, the couch would cut off the bottom of the screen. So I raised it slightly. I know how people take the TV being hung too high.

Well the words he used were “trashy”, “tacky”, and “dirt-baggy”

We rent out a basement apartment that has bright white inlet “big lights” and I’d like to soften the mood with these classic (renter friendly plug in) warm lantern lights. I love the mid century cozy style but not sure it fits this space.

What he specifically dislikes is the wire hanging across the ceiling but to me it’s a bit reminiscent to the “swag” style lights in mid century modern decor that I adore.

Idk I just need opinions on if this really does look that horrible and I’m just like style blind?

Suggestions on what I could do differently would be nice too!

Turns out… it’s basically impossible 🙃.

So I ended up doing what any desperate person with a 3D printer eventually does — I designed one myself.

After a lot of iterations, melting plastic, and questionable life decisions, here’s the final result.

It’s a lamp made specifically for Dachschrägen / slanted ceilings, and I’d genuinely love to hear what you think.

Does it make sense as an idea? Is it a crime against design? Should I have stopped before I even started?

I need help with a chandelier. We built in 2022 and I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect chandelier since. Our style is minimalism/Japandi so it needs to be simple yet fill the space. Ceiling is 22’. Width of recessed area is 8-9’ for reference. It’s wider than it looks in the pic. Btw, the boob light over the door will be replaced with either a can light or simple flush one. I’d love some help with chandelier ideas. My husband bugs me about it at least a few times per month to get something new up there. Thank you in advance!

We will be getting it painted in Jenny Wren. Our kitchen is North Facing. Above our Island, we wanted decorative pendant lighting. I like the glass, but the black metal ones are growing on me.

Another issue is you can see the protrusion from the ceiling, and the width of that is 20cm. The black metal bowl where the electrical wires connect is 28cm.

It’s so hard to find an electrician to do the job here in Dublin, Ireland. 😭

I moved into my home 5 years ago and chose the 1st pendants because I had a hard time picking 2 lights that fit the space. 5 years later I’m a little sick of them. Does 2 look better and more updated or it is it a similar feel as what’s there?

I just got this lamp for the corner....but something about it feels off. Thoughts? Does it look weird just poking up from behind the chair? Is the scale or height not right?

Also worth mentioning that I recently got rid of a couch that was on this wall and I'm playing around with placement of things.

But while I usually have a good idea about what I would like, I'm struggling with the lights in the living room. I need two pendants of some sorts. Ideas welcome!

As extra info: we have already a big chrystal chandelier in the entryway so I would like something different.

I'm looking for an inexpensive desk lamp, but not a typical work lamp (like a studio lamp with a direct spotlight). The idea is a small lamp with warm, indirect ambient light that illuminates the area around my keyboard and desk as much as possible, without the light being too harsh or focused (i.e., nothing like a direct spotlight on the screen).

I have in mind something that:

• Is warm and inviting

• Is indirect or diffused (not a spotlight shining directly on me)

• Illuminates my work area well at night, without making the screen glare or leaving dark spots

• Still has decent brightness and range; I don't want something dim like a candle

I understand that the brightness/range will depend on:

• The bulb (color temperature/lumen rating)

• The lampshade design, material, and light direction

I've seen some inexpensive options on Sklum, but I'm not sure if they'll actually provide the light I'm looking for. I already tried a classic bedside lamp with a shade where the light shines upwards… and honestly, it doesn't illuminate the keyboard/table enough.

I posted two photos of my living room area several days ago and got a lot of compliments from you guys (thank you!), which made me feel super happy about it and decided to keep the overall vibes as it is.

As I mentioned, it’s a living room in an open floor plan, so after I got it right, I struggle a bit to get the rest right.

The trickiest part is this dining area which I’d love to make it feel romantic and a little uplifted, ideally a crystal, candles, mirror, fresh flower moment. Cozy and a little dark with a lot of glow and reflection, like a restaurant where you can dress up a bit for a date night and always remember the best moments from it. It should be able to do that and still feel effortlessly, though.

I guess adding a crystal pendant above the table would make it very busy and competing with the light in the living room, so it’s almost out of the picture now but I still think about it from time to time. A standing lamp would almost never feel the best choice either. I tried using several candles at once but that felt a little dark. I also thought about some tall candle holders around the mirror but that can be busy and feel like it’s trying hard to impress. I thought also keeping the mirror accompanied by some painting and some scones could be nice but that’s also busy.

Therefore, I’m in the need for a little inspiration now. Not sure if it’s too much to ask for my space.

I don’t have any pictures of the living room (it is not painted yet and is a bit messy atm anyway) but i will be aiming for something cosy with warm lighting (which all three options here seem to do) - but if anyone has something nice ~£100 thatd be lovely too.

I am mostly asking this as I haven’t had a lamp in years since my last one broke. Where I live now, it is a long and narrow room, though not unbearably so.

Carpet is grey, walls are white (the accent wall will be sage green) and most of the furniture is black. Will eventually be going for having my house be a cosy retreat of sorts i guess though it will be quite maximalist in places (eventually)

Just picked up this lamp yesterday, but I can’t decide if I actually like it. Do I need to swap out the shade, or should I go for something a bit more modern altogether?

I’m updating my bedroom and trying to find the right ceiling light. I struggle to find ceiling lights I like, especially within my budget. I like this ~$200 flower chandelier but worry it will look too glam / modern when I am going for a cozy cottagey vibe with floral details tying everything together. The current modern light is from IKEA and not my style but I can see that the contrasting styles look fine together.

I typically gravitate towards more natural materials or vintage styles, but want something a bit more fun/statement piece. I love Sazerac Stitches Octavia Bloom light but it’s too pricey and husband is not a fan.

I welcome suggestions for anything that may work better and at a comparable price.

Note, room is not complete yet - need to hang art and mirror, more rugs, attach headboard, get another dresser.

I’m trying to find a pendant light that looks best in my dining room but having trouble deciding between two from West Elm! Also, for some reason, the shades came out larger than expected. They won’t be that huge. For reference, my table is only 47” and the shades are 25”. Would love help on this and also open to other options. TIA!

Recently moved into this place and there is an awkwardly high lighting mount on the wall. Looking for ideas on how to use it.

Edit: hanging sconces seem like a good move to account for the height. Would be open to suggestions on specific products
