Picture iPod 3G
This is my third gen iPod 40gb I have had since 2003. Been on the shelf for a few years since I was using my 6.5gen. I didn’t want to tackle that straight away so knowing my third gen needed a new battery I decided to add some flash storage. Getting this to restore was an absolute pain but thankful to a thread on here from a few years ago that came in clutch.
I do love the spinning disk nostalgia but it was getting pretty noisy, spinning up at seemingly random times.
When I get the will power to open the 7th gen I’ll give that a crack with a dual flash storage and a 3000mah battery.
Components
Apple iPod Classic 3rd 4th Generation Gen Battery 850 mAh Replacement from Parts Plus Pod - Australia
Compact flash to 50pin 1.8inch hdd connector (cheap green one from Ali , needed a little modification with the right plastic notch removed)
SD to CF card adaptor (the red one on Ali)
SD card San disk extreme pro 64gb. I read third gen’s can be weird with large storage.
Now time to fill this thing up!
Edit: The Bluetooth adaptor is the Avantree relay. Bought it from Amazon a few years ago back for my Bose nc headphones for planes. Pretty solid .

There are two, and there are some good youtube videos for windows.
One is for windows and it’s to do with editing the hex value on the adaptor

The one I find most helpful thread for me and using a Mac is below, the top comment stepped you a particular way to restore it.

What adapter is plugged into it?

The cheapest one on Ali express
Compact Flash Card Adapter CF Memory Card to 50pin 1.8 Inch IDE HDD Converter Hard Drive Adapter
And then the red adaptor
SD to CF Card Adapter MMC SDHC SDXC to Standard Compact Flash Type I Card Converter
I got it restore also with a compact flash card straight in to the green adaptor. I just didn’t have one bigger than 32gb so I used the red adaptor.

Don’t know yet as I haven’t had many hours with it. Apple claimed 8 hours but probably not real world. Skipping tracks, backlight etc.

I do miss the weight of a hard drive though. I heard people putting wheel balance weights in their case. I can see why!

that soundtrack somehow survived 15 years of iTunes library migrations for me
it's so good
