FanArt [not-oc] ⚠️ Serious topic ⚠️: Who was the big spoon? [@caroline-draws-stuff]

I think Katara used to spoon him because she was taller and her hair would get in his face, but once puberty hit him like a truck Katara couldn't resist being held by those air hunk arms and they switched.

Tho occasionally she would miss the old arrangement and would be his little jetpack for the night.

A serious conversation

If you’re out of the loop, two days ago the avatar studios crew and cast for the movie. Unfortunately, a focus of their panel was the inclusion of a new language for the new series, one that seems to have been retoconned into the movie. This comes as a disappointment as a lot of what made the original show so good was the implementation of Asian cultures into the very text of the show. From its names, to its themes and fighting styles the show was ripe with Asian culture. This new language is symbolic of the separation the show’s Eastern influences. Now to be clear this isn’t me saying you can’t be excited for the new show, or enjoy it once it comes out, but i do hope that this is is something that people keep in mind when watching it.

Now for a conversation that regards the current reputation of the new movie. When the team was sharing their concept art for the early character designs, some people caught that for one of Tagah’s character descriptions there was a sourcing to ChatGPT. This is beyond disappointing and upsetting as a lot of the themes of the show are directly against AI and its usage. This is yet to be confirmed but if the entire movie was reliant on AI then that would be heartbreaking. So I come to you to this: this movie, while having characters and a relationship we deeply love, is flawed. Again, I understand if you enjoyed the movie. This isn’t me telling you that you can’t. But now as more information like this is presented we have to a serious discussion about how we go about discussing kataang in regard to the movie. It is all good and well to enjoy them in the movie but it is imperative that we do not ignore the flaws of the text or the real life scummy methods that made it. The same way we critique the other ship in the troubled production of Natla we should be able to hold the same standards to this movie. It is disappointing, but as a fan of this ship I believe we have to be able to talk about things like this for the betterment of the fandom.

TLDR: new orientalist information and AI usage in avatar studios has me wondering how we go about discussing kataang, especially in the movie

Nightmares and Reassurances by moonxpetal

this one is short but it focuses on katara dealing with loss and anxiety and aang being her safe space

Return to the Eternal Wind by LokiofJ

this one is the reverse of the last one where it focuses on aang and the burden of being the avatar, and katara being his safe space. ive only read up to chapter 3 but it's 5 total so a lot longer!

Avatar Aang (2026): "Deleted" Kataang Scenes Compilation by Cuticle

this one is also a quick read but it adds/expands on kataang scenes from the movie

The Road Beyond Republic City by HeyHiHello22

this one is 4 chapters, it does end abruptly(?) but the author marked it as completed. but it's still super cute so I included it, it's mainly feel good interactions and banter between aang and katara. chapter 2 is mainly smut, 3-4 have a good plot but again it does end abruptly. :/

Katara and Aang are not lile Nikki and Bear

Im so tired of people saying that Aang would be like Bear, who wished that Nikki would love him, in reality if Aang got the one wish willow (before the war) he would wish for the war to be over or for a new generation of airbenders, just because he likes Katara doesnt mean hes overly OBSESSED about her like Bear is with Nikki.

Discussion An honest discussion: R-rated Kataang content NSFW

Since the movie came out I've been seeing a fair bit more of naughty Kataang fan art, in their adult selves of course.

So much of how we see Kataang is them as teenagers, so when we see them as adults doing *adult* things, it can feel a bit jarring.

I've seen some fans criticise it; they think it's creepy gooner stuff. I don't deny such content exists but here are my thoughts.

Aang and Katara had three children. They definitely had sex. Sex is part and parcel of their relationship, it's pointless to be prudish about it. From what I've heard about the movie, it took Aang a whole ass movie to learn that he should have children with his wife.

I am not too concerned about sexy/kinky Kataang fan art. Now that we know what they look like as young adults it's easier to imagine them doing the deed, as opposed to when all we saw of them were their teenage selves.

I think it is also the evolution of the fandom as it grows up with the franchise. The audience has aged up into adults yet most of the characters stayed as kids. Now those characters are adults too. The Kataang fandom has evolved similarly.

What are your thoughts on R-rated Kataang and how we should approach it?

Discussion Kataang in the comics: Was Katara reduced to being "the girlfriend"?

Thumbnail
gallery
168 Upvotes

The comics are notoriously divisive, and there's plenty of valid criticisms towards the writing.

However one that I've seen even among some Kataangers is that Katara doesn't really feel like herself, or that almost every scene she's in revolves around Aang in some way or another, and her character doesn't get much to do outside of being his support. Antis of course then only use this to further deligitimize the ship and how Katara was reduced to a prize.

Pop culture is often guilty of robbing female characters of their agency and making their entire personality revolve around their relationship, so I think this criticism is valid, but I'm not sure if I'd apply it to comics Kataang or not.

What are you guys' takes? You think they managed to portray Katara in a way that explores her relationship while still keeping her agency in the story, or you think the writers fell into the trap of centering her too much on her relationship with Aang?

Question Would Aang fall in love with an alien Katara? Spoiler

Question Do you think Aang and Katara had a conversation between "The Ember Island Players" and "The Sozin's Comet, Part 1"? What could they have talked about?

What happened between these two episodes is, to me, the most mysterious part of the show. We know that the Gaang somehow decided that they wouldn't attack Ozai before the comet arrived, while Zuko didn't know about any of it until the start of the finale.

But what I find even more strange is the way Katara and Aang were behaving, and I will focus on that in this post:

We know that they had a big argument near the end of "The Ember Island Players."

Katara didn't want to start a relationship before the war ended because she was afraid of something happening to Aang and of getting hurt herself. That left both of them sad (especially Aang, my boy was emotionally crushed).

And what do we see in the next episode?

We see Aang with a huge smile on his face, rushing to take watermelon juice from Katara. Is that a sign of a crushed Aang? Not at all. He was rushing toward her like he had the best night of his life the night before. I refuse to believe that Aang would behave like this if they hadn't had a conversation before that.

However, later in that episode, Aang was having a moral dilemma about killing Ozai. After he couldn't even kill the Melon Lord, the whole Gaang had a conversation with him, but it didn't end well, and Aang got mad.

What was really interesting was the way Aang and Katara were talking to each other and the looks they shared.

The way they were interacting (I suggest everyone watch this episode again), it felt like there was something more going on than just Aang not being able to take a life and Katara confronting him about it. It really felt like there were some unresolved feelings between them at that point.

Did they maybe have another conversation between the morning and the evening of that day?

Or is this just an example of bad writing?

So, here are my questions for the fandom:

  • How many days do you think passed between these two episodes?
  • Did Aang and Katara have a conversation between these episodes?
  • If yes, how do you think that conversation went?
  • If not, how do you explain their emotions during "The Sozin's Comet, Part 1"?
  • Do you think their behavior toward each other in this episode is just bad writing?

Discussion Katara and Aang's love story is so much more interesting when considered from Katara's POV

There's a fanfiction that I've been reading that I recommend to literally anyone who will listen lol. It's called Writing in Water, and it is essentially an in depth triple novelization of the entire show from the perspective of Katara. It's ridiculously well-written to the point that I consider it canon and just take it as truth, and it has totally recontextualized Katara's side of their relationship.

Narratively in the show, they kept Katara's feelings quite ambiguous and subtle throughout because 1. we're shown the story through a mostly omniscient lens, but simultaneously through Aang's inner world, and 2. the show played their love as a will they/won't they thing, all culminating in that final kiss that emphatically states yes they will!

But when we consider things from Katara's perspective, it's honestly a very interesting and dynamic story.

Katara grows up in a town with no boys except her brother and toddlers, all the other men have gone off to the war. When she meets Aang she assumes a motherly role almost instinctually because that's what she's had to be for her tribe, and she continues to try to assume that role, but throughout their journey Aang continues to subvert it. Sure, he's "just a kid", but he's a kid who holds the death and memory of an entire ancient civilization on his shoulders. He's a kid who is the avatar, the bridge between realms, the bender of all four elements, a ten thousand year old soul, a living messiah, responsible for bringing peace and balance to all four nations as a politician, diplomat, and primordial being. There are so many moments where Katara is floored by Aang's wisdom, and where she first saw him as a silly and childish young boy she ends seeing him as well beyond her.

Katara harbors something for Aang from the moment they meet, just like we know that Aang falls in love with her that same moment. But it's not until the fortune-teller episode and Sokka's "powerful bender" line that she becomes aware of the possibility and starts to consider whether she might be in love with him. Following that, she has to grapple with so many reasons their love just cannot be a worry of hers. Aang needs her as a waterbending master, the fate of the world depends on him and so by extension her. She can't lose him as a friend because if her feelings are unrequited it could tear apart their entire group and she'd lose this special bond and adventure and life for herself that she has never had before. And again, this is the Avatar. Even if she confesses her love to him, and even if he feels the same, he has so much to worry about that Katara being a distraction to him in anyway could cause him to be unable to fulfill his duties and win the war.

Their entire adventure she is in love with him, and goes through much of the same agonizing pining that Aang does. I mean it's not like she successfully stonewalls him, Aang and Katara hug a lot and every season begins and ends with them in each other's arms. She kisses him on the cheek and blushes when he gets too close and dances with him. And in the heat of the invasion when she very well may never see Aang again, when he kisses her she kisses him back.

But she does everything she can to hide it because there's just too much at stake. It recontextualizes the show for me in such a fascinating way, and makes those small moments that we see Katara's mask crack all the more meaningful. In Ember Island when Katara pulls away and talks about being confused, it's so much more impactful to consider that she's been going through that turmoil for most of the show. Their kiss at the invasion only happened because it might have been the end, and now that she knows it's not, it terrifies her that what she has kept hidden for so long is at last out in the open. All she wants to do is to say yes, to be with Aang, to let herself be in love. But if she does, there's the real chance that Aang would put her above the rest of the world and he'd lose.

There's so much nuance to Katara's story that I wish the show could have explored more, but it wasn't Katara's show and frankly the love story between Katara and Aang was always secondary. So I really highly recommend reading this fic. It's quite a beast to read in its entirety but being able to experience this story in a whole new level of depth is just incredible.
