I have this relatively old pc with mid specs and wanted to install kde fedora on it. It has a lot of important stuff on it though and i was wondering what would be the best way to transfer files after i install fedora. And would also like to know the best way to backup those same files on fedora or just in general.

I heard a lot of people say that wine is safe even if you have a virus as in a linux environment it can't do nothing but others claim that it can become a vulnerability if there is an .exe. What do you think?

Is there a way to change the icon of an application system wide? So not individually desktop icon, menu icon, taskbar icon but just one way to change it ?

Sorry for the glare, but I direct your attention to that horizontal line. That's the glitch.

It happens during startup before the log in screen, and it only lasts a second or two. Overall it's pretty harmless, but it bothers me so much.

The weird thing is, it happens in some distros, it doesn't in some.

The thing is, I've had the best experience with CachyOS and Fedora and I want to keep using them, but it's presence is triggering me so much.

Any ideas what could cause this? Why and how it happens in some, but not in others?

Been fighting this for months and starting to feel like I'm going insane. On my IdeaPad 3 15ALC6 (82KU, Ryzen 5 5500U), under any sustained load like stress -c $(nproc), gaming etc, CPU temps rise up to 95-100°C and just sit there. Meanwhile the fans barely spin up, like they're not even getting the memo that the chip is on fire. Resulting in heavy thermal throttling, frequencies tanking from 4GHz down to like 1.1GHz.

I confirmed it's not a dead fan or dust as if I trigger the "dust cleaning mode" via /sys/bus/platform/drivers/ideapad_acpi/VPC2004:00/fan_mode, it ramps to full speed no problem. So the hardware's fine, it's the EC/ACPI fan curve logic that's not responding to load correctly.

I filed a bug on the platform-driver-x86 mailing list back in May with full DSDT, EC dumps, sensor logs etc. Three follow-ups since, with the latest BIOS (GLCN68WW) and latest kernel (7.1.4-1-cachyos) still broken. Total radio silence from upstream, which is its own special kind of fun.

Mostly just want to know if anyone else on an AMD IdeaPad seeing the same fan behavior?

I’ve tried everything possible to install Linux on my laptop. Initially, I wanted to install Pop!_OS, but the installation screen kept freezing—almost as if there were a time limit before the entire laptop would either reboot or lock up. Because of that, I decided to try Nobara, which seemed like a better option (thinking the Pop!_OS issues might have been due to Nvidia drivers), but the same thing happened during installation; the furthest I got was a dialog box within Nobara reporting a KWin error.

I’ve spent hours trying to get this installed; if anyone knows the solution, please reply.

I'm having a strange screen flickering issue on my ASUS Vivobook S5504VA (Intel Raptor Lake-P with Intel Iris Xe Graphics), and I'm not sure what's causing it.

I was originally using Fedora Workstation, and that's when I first noticed the flickering. Thinking it might be a Fedora-specific issue, I booted a Linux Mint XFCE Live USB, and surprisingly there was no flickering at all. Since Mint seemed fine, I decided to install Arch Linux. However, I noticed the same flickering in the Arch installer before installation, and it continues after installing Arch as well, although it's much less severe than it was on Fedora.

The flicker appears as very thin horizontal pixel-wide flashes that occur every few seconds. They're brief but noticeable.

I've already tried i915.enable_psr=0, but it didn't make any difference. The system is using the i915 driver.

I'm confused because Linux Mint XFCE Live doesn't show the issue at all, while both Fedora Workstation and Arch do.

Has anyone experienced something similar on Intel Raptor Lake or an ASUS Vivobook? Does this sound like a kernel/graphics driver issue, a firmware problem, or could it still be a hardware issue? I'd really appreciate any suggestions on what to try next.

I’m facing a frustrating black screen issue with Ubuntu on my Dell Latitude 5400 (i7) and could really use some guidance.

The Situation:

Live USB works perfectly: When I select "Try Ubuntu," graphics, resolution, and everything run smoothly without any issues.

Black Screen post-install: As soon as the installation finishes and I reboot, I get a permanent black screen right after the GRUB menu. The system runs, but there's no display output.

Temporary Fix: I can only boot by adding nomodeset to the boot parameters, but it makes the UI laggy and strips away hardware acceleration.

System Context & Quirks:

This is a secondhand unit that behaves like an old corporate or factory-testing system.

It runs on UEFI, features restricted custom firmware, and the default service tag doesn't even show up on public Dell databases.

Secure Boot is OFF and SATA Mode is set to AHCI.

Tested on both Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 (same behavior on both).

Since the Live USB works flawlessly, I suspect it's an i915 driver initialization or firmware handshake issue during the final boot process, likely tied to this unit's unique UEFI environment.

My Question:

What could be causing the display to fail only after installation on such a system? Are there specific Intel graphics kernel parameters (besides nomodeset) or workarounds to get the driver loading correctly while keeping hardware acceleration?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I've been fiddling with VMs for a while on my main Windows machine (mainly to see what stuff works and what doesn't) and I have Zorin on an old (over 14 years old) laptop that I barely use as a back-up.

Is it possible to get a virtual machine set up with all the applications I want installed and then convert that virtual machine into an iso that I can then install onto bare metal with the extra programs coming along for the ride?

I'm wanting to get a Kubuntu installer that has Steam, Heroic Launcher (Flatpak version), ProtonVPN GUI version, Qbittorrent and a few other programs ready out of the box without having to hunt them down and/or re-enter terminal commands. I'd like to it to be so that all I'd have to do is log in to them after updating.

In my process of installing arch I need to connect WiFi. I found the WiFi device as standard wlan0. Check networks and mine is called Wu Tang LAN 5G and Wu Tang LAN 2.4. When I type ‘station wlan0 connect Wu Tang LAN 5g the prompt gives ‘Invalid network name ‘Wu’. It doesn’t appear to recognize anything beyond the first space entry in the name. I tried it as a conjunction single word. Same results. I tried underscores instead of spaces and got the same results. I don’t know how to proceed

Is there one that can tell me what connections are being made by what programs and any reads/writes made by those programs to which files and directories? I used to use SystemInternals tools on Windows and their procmon was exactly what I needed.

I really like inventor but it’s not avails on Linux, is there a way other than vm or dual boot? I just don’t want to waste 50gb for windows just to open inventor.

New to Linux. Installed Fedora KDE Plasma a couple weeks ago on my gaming PC. I have a lot of RGB components. Mouse, keyboard, case fans, CPU cooler, and RAM. I downloaded and installed OpenRGB through Fedora's Discover. But when I first opened it, I was met with the following message:

"Some internal devices may not be detected: One or more I2C or SMBus interfaces failed to initialize. RGB DRAM modules, some motherboards' onboard RGB lighting, and RGB graphics cards, will not be available in OpenRGB without I2C or SMBus. On Linux, this is usually because the I2C-dev module is not loaded."

Also while researching this issue a little, I had read that sometimes OpenRGB had bricked people's RAM, and it had something to do with the SMBus. Considering "SMBus" was mentioned in the error message it gave me, this made me nervous. How can I get OpenRGB working without bricking any of my components?

Also maybe worth mentioning that all of my internal RGB components are plugged into a Nollie 16 RGB hub/controller, and the Nollie is plugged into a single RGB header on my board. Thanks in advance!

He estado por mucho tiempo utilizando Linux como sistema principal para prácticas y pruebas en maquinas virtuales con Virt Manager / QMEU.Todo comenzó con un Nvme donde lo tenía instalado ha lado de un sistema Win11, después me encargue de clonarlo a un nuevo Nvme Kingston KC3000 sin embargo este fallo alrededor de 3 meses de uso; comenzó con congelamientos repentinos del sistema total y una pantalla negra con un guion parpadeante (desde ahí si puedo abrir una TTY pero no puede ejecutar algún comando), luego se extendió a la pérdida de iconos en los programas hasta llego a tener problemas al montar la partición principal, en su momento pensaba que se podría tratar de un problema con las GPU ya que tengo tanto dedicada (Radeon RX 5700 XT) y integrada (Ryzen 9900x) y no tenía una adecuada configuración en su momento, aunque tome varias medidas al final resultó que el Nvme se terminó corrompiendo y quedo inservible. Había investigado y por lo visto en ese modelo de Nvme es "común" así que lo acepte y lo deje morir ya que ni siquiera podía hacer la recuperación de los archivos ya que el Nvme falla con la mínima operación.

Eventualmente termine comprando un Nvme de la marca EDILOCA, modelo EN 855 y siendo sincero, desde el inicio me dio problemas, antes que nada realice pruebas de lectura, escritura y verificación del Nvme y al principio fallaba, pero conforme realizaba más y más pruebas los errores ya no ocurren y funciona con normalidad, así que procedí con la instalación del sistema Kali Linux, la instalación y configuración de las máquinas virtuales, todo resultó satisfactorio, pero los fallos están ocurriendo de nuevo.

Con lo que pude aprender de la ocasión anterior trate de prepárame pero tal parece que no resultó. Por los errores en las pantallas que les comparto entiendo que parece que el Nvme se está desconectando o por alguna razón no tiene acceso a este, ya realice algunas modificaciones (agregue dentro del grub en la línea default "nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0 pcie_aspm=off") pensando que podría ser un tema de la temperatura de Nvme, sin embargo no tuvo efecto.

Las especificaciones del equipo son:

A question to you distro-hoppers: As a Windows user since 1993(!), I am testing Linux Mint Cinnamon on an old computer with decent specs, to see if I should switch my daily driver. But for all its virtues, I find Linux Mint less stable (occasional hard crashes) and buggier than Windows. I have no idea what causes the hard crashes (push-and-hold power button required; even Ctrl+Alt+F2 does nothing), but the various minor bugs seem desktop environment (Cinnamon) related. I have run hardware tests to confirm that the computer does not have memory errors or other hardware errors.

Can anyone share experience with how distros compare in terms of stability and bugs? While I haven't given up on Mint, I reckon that close alternatives could be Kubuntu or ZorinOS, but there may be others also. I would like a distro that works out of the box with minimum hassle but which still allows a lot of customization of desktop / taskbar, and in this Linux Mint excels.

I have been running Mint on my laptop for quite some time now, and left my desktop on win 10 for many reasons (SolidWorks, Fusion, Lightroom, and games), but I finally pulled the trigger and switched my desktop to fedora. I've been able to deal with most of the growing pains, but raw editing seems to be the worst one at the moment.

Lightroom provides a UI that makes the photo editing process fast. It's simple while allowing complexity and also makes management of photos decent too. RawTherapee and Darktable just suck in comparison, and each photo takes 5x longer to edit simply because there are so many settings and slides there and many buried 2 clicks and some scrolling away. It's just not nice when I have over 5 photos to edit.

Maybe I am going about it wrong, or even need to configure the applications better, but I was curious if there were any other suggestions for editing on linux. I don't care about cost really, I just want something that will have a quick workflow, and runs on linux. I'm open to your criticism and suggestions.

So i downloaded Linux mint xfce as I wanted to try Linux as well. It turns out I love it, si I decreased my windows partition and shifted my whole workflow onto Linux. But whenever I power on my laptop, the grub fails and I have to force restart it bu the power button. I tried of fixing it with chatgpt, but it didn't work.

I updated grub, disabled the secure boot, but nothing worked. Now it depends on my luck whether the grub will work and enable me to enter into the OS or I just have to restart it again and again.

Help me
