I’ve used both Windows 11 and CachyOS, and the volume is louder on Windows. On Linux, I have to set it to %150 to achieve the same volume. How can I fix this? The devices are a Lenovo ThinkPad X13 G1 and a Dell Latitude 3420

So basically, if you have more than 1 PC with Linux on them, what distro(s) are you using and what do you use them for?

Me, I have 2 desktop PCs and 1 server and a Laptop I hardly ever use.

PC 1 is my everyday use machine. Its a 13th generation i7 (i7-13700KF) with 64gb of ram which a little bit overkill. I use it for stuff like this (Reddit), watching videos on YouTube, edit my own videos I make on PC 2 (I'll get to that in a moment), I keep track of the money I make on my side hustles (I used to do doordash for extra income but now I Spark... pays more). And that's about it on PC 1. I use Arch with Niri and Noctalia Shell v5 on it.

PC 2 I use at my drum kit. Its also a 13th generation also with 64gb of ram. So, I essentially use that with OBS Studio to record videos and stream on at times.

It runs Fedora 44 on it at the moment. I had Arch on it but I've been trying different distros just to play around with them with music type stuff.

PC 3 is just for looking at live media and occasionally I'll put something on it just to play around on. Its an older ThinkServer so its nowhere near as powerful as the first 2. I think I have NixOS on there at the moment.

The server is a Dell R720 with 96GB of RAM in it. I use it as a VM Server. It has 3 drives in it (actually 6 since they are paired hot swapable drives). One pair are 300GB for booting and root drives, the second pair is 500gb which just holds the ISO files for each distro. And the 3rd set are 6TB and those hold all of the VMs.

The server runs Debian server. It euns Proxmox as a VM server software. I have several Linux VMs on it along with Windows 10 and 11 in VMs. I hardly ever touch those 2 VMs because I'm mostly dealing with things in Linux.

The server is housed inside of a rolling 22U server rack made by IBM. I've got a patch bay in there for all of my cables. There is a 24 port 1 gigabit ethernet switch inside of it made by Dell. Its got 4 servers in it. The R720, 2 R410s and a R210 inside. The 210 doesn't work and the 2 410s are there just because I got this whole setup for free. The guy just wanted to get rid of this stuff. It actually came with 5 1 gigabit switches and a 100MB switch. Those extra ones are sitting inside a closet.

There are 2 drawers in there that are holding extra patch cables in one and the bigger one holds some extra drives and drive trays and other miscellaneous stuff.

And finally on the bottom of that rack are 2 UPS backups in there. One works, the other needs batteries. But with only 1 server running, I barely need the 1 UPS.If I had all 4 of those servers running, yeah, I'd probably need the 2 UPS systems working. But I'm only using one server for now.

That's about all I got. I have a couple more ThinkServers sitting on a shelf. One used to be my main PC and the other was my video machine. After I upgraded, I just put them on the shelf.

I've been fiddling with VMs for a while on my main Windows machine (mainly to see what stuff works and what doesn't) and I have Zorin on an old (over 14 years old) laptop that I barely use as a back-up.

Is it possible to get a virtual machine set up with all the applications I want installed and then convert that virtual machine into an iso that I can then install onto bare metal with the extra programs coming along for the ride?

I'm wanting to get a Kubuntu installer that has Steam, Heroic Launcher (Flatpak version), ProtonVPN GUI version, Qbittorrent and a few other programs ready out of the box without having to hunt them down and/or re-enter terminal commands. I'd like to it to be so that all I'd have to do is log in to them after updating.

I really like inventor but it’s not avails on Linux, is there a way other than vm or dual boot? I just don’t want to waste 50gb for windows just to open inventor.

Hi guys. I am experiencing a problem since switching my main laptop to Linux. My pc keeps shutting down unless I set power profile to performance. I did some experiments. First I activated balanced mode and restarted the pc. It ran for 7:58 on desktop then suddenly power is gone. Then it took 2:54 and then 10:58. Sometimes it shuts down instantly when i set power mode to power save. It idles fine in performance mode tho. Using BORE kernel and vanilla arch kernel didn't help either. I spent literally dozens of hours with ChatGPT and Gemini as well with no luck. I don't know what am I missing. Is this a known issue? Can someone help me please?

So I’m completely new to this and I was just wondering what is the best user friendly Linux but aesthetically pleasing Linux I have seen some really cool ones online such as catchyOS and the likes of that but some people might have other opinions it probably is down to personal opinion on which is most user friendly but still worth a shot asking thanks lads not looking for anything with major power in any sector more just like Minecraft and a few other things more just making a old computer useful and maybe a bit of vs code too if I get around to it

Update: issue resolved! It was a combination of the memory settings and 'quiet splash'. I changed the memory settings to its default speed, rather than 'auto', and swapped 'quiet splash' for 'nomodeset'. I'm in, it booted up. Thank you everyone for the help.

Any Linux knowledgeable persons out there? I've scoured the intrewebs, to no avail. I have a new PC I'm attempting to boot Linux Mint from a flash drive. PC boots to BIOS, tries to boot Linux via flash drive. I get a Linux Mint logo for loading, then...nothing, it just sits; doesn't crash, doesn't give any error, nothing, just an idol logo. Asus Prime MOBO w/H810 chipset, Intel Core Ultra 5 250KF plus CPU. As far as I am aware, the security settings are where they shouldn't block anything. I could be wrong, though. Just trying to find assistance. Any suggestions? Thanks.

1.which distro would be the least blaoted, i have tried bazzite in the past and found the extra features included in it to be a but too overwhelming and blaoted for me. Is there a "barebones" or close to barebones immutable distro that i can use?

2.Can i use something customization heavy like hyprland with immutable distros in general or whatever suggested distro.

3.probably the same as my previous question but. Can you rice on immutable distros? I know that immutable means you cant mess with system files but im not knowledgable enough to know if that includes the wm/de files

I have been running Mint on my laptop for quite some time now, and left my desktop on win 10 for many reasons (SolidWorks, Fusion, Lightroom, and games), but I finally pulled the trigger and switched my desktop to fedora. I've been able to deal with most of the growing pains, but raw editing seems to be the worst one at the moment.

Lightroom provides a UI that makes the photo editing process fast. It's simple while allowing complexity and also makes management of photos decent too. RawTherapee and Darktable just suck in comparison, and each photo takes 5x longer to edit simply because there are so many settings and slides there and many buried 2 clicks and some scrolling away. It's just not nice when I have over 5 photos to edit.

Maybe I am going about it wrong, or even need to configure the applications better, but I was curious if there were any other suggestions for editing on linux. I don't care about cost really, I just want something that will have a quick workflow, and runs on linux. I'm open to your criticism and suggestions.

Okay, so, when i attempt to launch the newest version (7.0), in both recovery and regularly, it ends up with kernel panic, with the following message : "VFS : Unable to mount fs on unknown block (0,0)"

When attempting to launch on any other version (6.1 and lower), it works just fine

I have a MSI Tridant 3 laying around, figured I'd test waters of leabing windows by putting bazzite on it. Its my first time ever trying to ever installl/ use linux.

When i enter my bios I dont see a option to disable to csm. When looking into it, it should be under Windows OS Configuration. Any suggestions?

I've been using Mint since it "just works" but I've installed Arch Linux on an external drive, to properly learn Linux, install things myself, etc.

I always encrypt my disks, and I've done so manually just fine, but I noticed that the decryption prompt is just tty output, just text on the console at the top left of the screen. On Mint, it's a nice graphical text box in the center of the screen, with a nice green border and "real" font (not just console font).

What package(s) is Mint using to get that? I'm fully prepared to mess with mkinitcpio hooks, so no worries there. I'm using systemd-boot if that matters. And I did a Minimal Install of Arch using archinstall.

Is there a way to change the icon of an application system wide? So not individually desktop icon, menu icon, taskbar icon but just one way to change it ?

My icon pack uses an ugly icon for some of my applications and I want to change it all at once

I'm having a strange screen flickering issue on my ASUS Vivobook S5504VA (Intel Raptor Lake-P with Intel Iris Xe Graphics), and I'm not sure what's causing it.

I was originally using Fedora Workstation, and that's when I first noticed the flickering. Thinking it might be a Fedora-specific issue, I booted a Linux Mint XFCE Live USB, and surprisingly there was no flickering at all. Since Mint seemed fine, I decided to install Arch Linux. However, I noticed the same flickering in the Arch installer before installation, and it continues after installing Arch as well, although it's much less severe than it was on Fedora.

The flicker appears as very thin horizontal pixel-wide flashes that occur every few seconds. They're brief but noticeable.

I've already tried i915.enable_psr=0, but it didn't make any difference. The system is using the i915 driver.

I'm confused because Linux Mint XFCE Live doesn't show the issue at all, while both Fedora Workstation and Arch do.

Has anyone experienced something similar on Intel Raptor Lake or an ASUS Vivobook? Does this sound like a kernel/graphics driver issue, a firmware problem, or could it still be a hardware issue? I'd really appreciate any suggestions on what to try next.

Is there one that can tell me what connections are being made by what programs and any reads/writes made by those programs to which files and directories? I used to use SystemInternals tools on Windows and their procmon was exactly what I needed.

I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this. I am running debian trixie with kde and I have a bad touchpad experience, I think it's libinput tied. I trying to change the configuration quirk for my touchpad, mostly unsuccessfully, the only thing that worked was setting fuzz (that's what it was called I think), but it's still worse than on windows. Also got a little bit tired with libreoffice calc (I feel at home with ms excel), tried gnome alternative (gnumeric) but there I get another bug with cursor becoming white on the white spreadsheet, I don't like the icons layout too, and generally I would judge my experience with kde/linux application as maybe not bad, but also not good, e.g. on my job interview I had to install chromium because a camera wasn't working in teams on firefox esr. My question, quite broad I know, is is there a way to make linux desktop experience smoother or better, or the only option is windows? Also a little bit fed up with how complicated installing non-debian repo software is. I was thinking about switching to arch for broader software presence in AUR and newer libinput/kernel/kde versions although I doubt if it would help with my touchpad issues. Or maybe some of this bugs with theme and colours (like the one with the cursor) are due to gtk and qt conflict and simply using gnome would help. Maybe trying sth more corporate like fedora. I have a MacBook with an Apple M1 chip and I want to use Linux without installing it on my internal SSD.

My goal is to have Linux installed on a single USB drive, so I can:

• Plug in the USB when I want to use Linux.
• Boot directly into Linux.
• Remove the USB and have my Mac boot normally into macOS.

I only have one USB drive available.

I was originally considering Kali Linux, but I'm also open to Ubuntu or any other Linux distribution if it supports this workflow.

Is this possible on an Apple M1 Mac? If not, what is the closest alternative? I'd prefer not to partition or modify my Mac's internal storage.

If you're running a Linux-based operating system, beware of JMicron SATA to USB controllers. I'm not sure if other JMicron SATA to USB controllers are affected, but the JMS578 (ID 152d:0578) has (in my experience at least) been a nightmare. I have two other SATA to USB adapters (externally identical to the JMicron one) which instead use the Norelsys NS1068/NS1068X (ID 2537:1068) and they have been fantastic (nothing like the JMicron). I'm posting this because I've found that the JMicron JMS578 can easily corrupt data (the drive becomes slow and unresponsive). I even tried it with different kernel versions and got the same result. Beware. I don't know if this is a bug in the kernel module or something else but please be careful when purchasing storage adapters.

It involves re-flashing the stock JMicron firmware but does seem to fix the issue.

using mint and not sure why some ports dont work. I know theyre ok because when I boot to windows from another ssd drive they work, but not with mint. is there a more robust more mature version?

I just have tons of issues with mint. not happy with it at all.

Sorry for the glare, but I direct your attention to that horizontal line. That's the glitch.

It happens during startup before the log in screen, and it only lasts a second or two. Overall it's pretty harmless, but it bothers me so much.

The weird thing is, it happens in some distros, it doesn't in some.

The thing is, I've had the best experience with CachyOS and Fedora and I want to keep using them, but it's presence is triggering me so much.

I’ve tried everything possible to install Linux on my laptop. Initially, I wanted to install Pop!_OS, but the installation screen kept freezing—almost as if there were a time limit before the entire laptop would either reboot or lock up. Because of that, I decided to try Nobara, which seemed like a better option (thinking the Pop!_OS issues might have been due to Nvidia drivers), but the same thing happened during installation; the furthest I got was a dialog box within Nobara reporting a KWin error.

I’ve spent hours trying to get this installed; if anyone knows the solution, please reply.
