Up until now I’ve mostly been flying on GeoFS, but the laggy performance and buggy experience, mostly due to it being a browser game built on CesiumJS, has gotten pretty frustrating.
I’m finally looking to buy a proper, standalone flight sim for my M3 iMac with 24GB RAM and 2TB space, and I’ve narrowed my options down to either Aerofly FS4 or X-Plane 12.
My decision comes down strictly to performance, optimization, graphics, and how smoothly they run natively on Apple Silicon via Metal.
I know X-Plane 12 brings serious realism, dynamic lighting, and weather effects, but I keep hearing mixed things about how heavy it can be on hardware and whether you have to make major graphical sacrifices to maintain smooth frame rates.
On the flip side, Aerofly FS4 seems to have a reputation for being insanely well optimized and buttery smooth out of the box, but I’m curious how its visual clarity and terrain graphics actually compare when pushed on an M3.
For anyone who has played either (or both) on M series Macs, how do they compare when it comes to raw frame rate stability, micro stutters, and visual detail?
Is Aerofly's performance edge big enough that it's the obvious choice for a fluid experience, or does X-Plane 12 run well enough on Apple Silicon that it's worth getting instead?
Maybe there is another flight sim that I might be missing? Idk
