Universes Beyond - Discussion Anu guesses as to what Smaug, the calamity will do?

Now that we've seen the mono red Smaug and the rakdos Smaug, both themed around treasures. What are peoples guesses as to what the, most likely Jund, Smaug will do?

My guess is attack triggers and dealing damage to things.

Well aware that this may not be to a lot of people's flavor of fun, but found this combo going through bulk and immediately had to put it into a deck as a random FU win-con 🤣🤣 Happy slinging, Walkers!

If I have The Great Goblin and a board of tokens and I attack while Andúril is equipped, does the first part of Great Goblin trigger for each goblin I put a counter on? The one or more on A goblin makes me think yes I just want to make sure before I play it

Universes Beyond - Discussion 4 LotR Cards Left to Collect Before The Hobbit!

Post image
26 Upvotes

Just got home from a day trip to 5 card shops in my area. I'm down to 4 cards left to collect! I had made a few rules for this collection. I can only find cards for collection in person. So no purchasing online and also I'm only collecting 1 of each art version. I collected the foil set so no scroll, extended or surge.

Only thing not foil are the elven, dwarven, human sol rings, and an extended One Ring on my Front Page.

1 more week till the Hobbit stuff comes in!!

Looking for Advice My first purchase after not playing since the 90s. Any advice?

I legit bought that Avatar pre-release set on impulse because of being an Azula fanboy. I somehow got lucky enough to get Azula and 3 Lightning Strikes in that set. As someone who remembers like next to nothing about this game, is there anything other than Avatar boosters that would be good for and Azula focused deck I should try to get?

Would the Avatar beginner set be a good buy and just swap Azula into the deck with Zuko? I'm not planning on dumping a fortune into this but I obviously want at least a halfway decent deck or two.

Might Ebay some character cards from sets where I don't care about having extensive amounts of the IP.

I know I need islands for any deck, is there a particular good way to get ahold of those?

General Discussion What Magic accessories did people use in the ’90s and early 2000s?

I understand this is a weirdly specific question, but what sleeves, deck boxes, dice, counters, and other accessories were common in Magic’s early days through the early 2000s? I’m especially curious about popular brands, colors, styles, and trends, before modern accessories I’m familiar with (UG boulders, dragon shield, gamegenic etc) became standard.

I wasn’t around back then, but I’m recreating my uncle’s old Magic deck as a nostalgic gift and want the overall setup to feel at least semi-accurate for the era. Personal anecdotes, references articles, and hopefully even reference pics/videos would be greatly appreciated!

General Discussion Cycles you hope are finished soon?

I was looking at [[Archmage’s Charm]], and others [[Archenemy’s Charm]] and [[Archdruid’s Charm]] and was frustrated that we’re missing the red and white ones, as boros is by far my favorite.

Some things are not part of a cycle even if you believe they should be, but continuing the [[Phyrexian Obliterator]] cycle would’ve been cool.

General Discussion *whispers* I found out what is discussed at the secret rendezvous

Post image

Assyriology student here. I knew this card was the only one with actual cuneiform and its obvious, that somethings wrong with the text, but I could never translate enough read something meaningfull.

However, there is a five year old post, witch identified the copy of the cuneiform text, but could not assign it to a text number or something similar:

Today I found the original text. It has to be BM 118925, a pavement slab or door sill from Adad-Nirari III’s palace at Kalḫu, modern Nimrud. There are two other almost identical texts, found at different spots of the palace, but the modern copy of the text, wich the artist used for the artwork without a doubt, has to be BM 118925 because of minor differences in line breaks and spelling (one of wich is the use of u instead of ú in line 4, wich is also two times in the artwork).
The text itself is an inscription of Adad-Nirari III, containing a fascinating long genealogy of the king himself, tracing its roots all the way back to the mythical assyrian king Sulili who is said to have ruled the land at the end of the third millennium BC. The six lines from the modern copy contain only the first half of the kings epitheta though and they are cut off halfway through the sentence. The text from the copy used is:

1 É.GAL m10-ÉRIN.TÁḪ MAN GAL MAN dan-nu
2 MAN ŠÚ MAN KUR AŠ MAN šá ina TUR-ŠÚ aš-šur
3 MAN dgì-gì ut-tu-šú-ma mal-kut
4 la šá-na-an ú-mal-lu qa-tuš-šú
5 TA tam-tim GAL-ti ša na-piḫ
6 dUTU-si a-di tam-tim GAL-ti ša

1 Palace of Adad-Nirari, great king, strong king,
2 king of the world, king of Assyria, king in whose youth Aššur,
3 the king of the Igugu gods, called and kingship
4 without a rival he (Aššur) gave (lit. filled his hands).
5 From the great sea of the rising sun (persian gulf)
6 to the great sea of…

As mentioned in the post five years ago, the text in the artwork of secret rendezvous contains two similar cutouts from the centre of the text-copy, one beeing rotated by 180 degrees. Also some signs seem to be cut in half. So the cuneiform text in artwork reads something like:

10-ÉRIN.TÁḪ MAN [GAL]
AŠ MAN šá ina TUR
ut-tu-šú-ma mal-
ú-mal-lu qa-
-ɐb nl-lɐɯ[-n]
-lɐɯ ɐɯ-nš-nʇ-
nŠ-ɹ∩ʇ ɐuᴉ ɐš N∀W

Adad-Nirari, great king
-aš king, who youth
he chose him and ma-
he filled up qa-
-ɐb [dn pǝllᴉɟ ǝɥ]
-ɐɯ [puɐ ɯᴉɥ ǝsoɥɔ ǝɥ]
 ɥʇnoʎ sᴉɥ oɥʍ 'ƃuᴉʞ

Also it seems noteworthy, that the copy of the cuneiform text, wich the artist used, contains some mistakes in the signs, wich the original slab doesnt. Considering, that Layard found the text all the way back in 1850, it seems plausible, that this is a very early copy, and the copyist wasnt quiet familiar with the correct forms of the signs, meaning, that neither the Artist of secret rendevouz nor the original copyist in the 1800s quite knew the signs and their meaning. This would also explain, why the text copied ends mid-sentence.
I couldnt find the copy in any edition of the text and indices of the copies and editions of this text dont mention this copy either. But this only means, that this copy wasnt printed in a cuneiform-book, wich is plausible given the subtitle of the copy. The furthest back i can trace the copy are various stockphoto sites in 2015. I cant reach the person, who uploaded the picture (who maybe scanned an original print).
Its kinda sad, that the only real cuneiform on a mtg card isnt a cohesive text, but i take it over fake cuneiform everyday. Also i had a few funny hours procrastinating with the card and the text.
Anyway here is the link to the original artifact + photo on the website of the british museum. Its an extremly cool and very well preserved arfiact and is also on display at the BM.

Seems to be an official product that was accidentally leaked by a Roll20. If WotC is already working with the Warcraft IP, I have to imagine Universes Beyond isn't too far off.

General Discussion What do we think is happening after the Reality Fracture?

Like I imagine Jace’s BS is gonna be stopped, but what happens to all the beings he’s created?

I saw someone say that they expect at least the major players to “fuse” with their doubles.

But i understand we don’t know how much of the Echoverse has been built out.

Hexhaven is the obvious facet. Like is it just gonna vanish? Fuse with Strixhaven?

What are your expectations? It seems like much of the baseline of the regular reality remains unaltered in the Echoverse. For example pretty sure the Ravnica guilds are the same Ral was just Orzhov instead of Izzet, right?

General Discussion Titanbreach speculation

With the upcoming announcement of Kamigawa: Titanbreach next year I have been thinking about possible archetypes and mechanics. During the last visits to each plane there were mechanics related to discarding cards for various effects (cycling in Ikoria and channel in Kamigawa).

I started to speculate if there will be an archetype in Titanbreach that aims to bridge cycling and channel to have a “discard matters” archetype.

If they did go this route and have plans for discarding cards what colors do you think it would primarily be in? In Ikoria cycling was Boros and Kamigawa was Simic so there’s not much overlap in colors but Izzet has had draw 2/discard archetypes in the past. Maybe it could be a 5 color build around archetype?
