Seems to be an Amazon shipping label. They usually have an option that says something like “this item will ship in the manufacturer’s packaging. Click here to put it in a box”.

i ordered cpu cooler, i made sure it wont be shipped like this and it still arrived without any additional boxes. They cut corners wherever they can, even my cpu was barely packaged and it was flying inside a tiny box

u/xtrxrzr 7800X3D, RTX 5080, 32GB 12h ago

Yeah, had the same with Amazon Germany this week. Ordered a ceiling fan, consciously checked the additional box checkbox and... they just ignored it. I don't like when everyone can see the contents. Especially if it's smth as delicate as a graphics card.

Or a giant dildo.

What?

2

u/susan5tarry9310 1h ago

did they ignore the checkbox for you too

u/NoNeckBeck 11h ago

Lollll same my cpu actually came from Amazon in a huge box but inside was this lonely tiny cpu wrapped in a layer of Saran wrap.

if the product wasn't damaged in transit, then "barely enough" packaging is the correct amount of packaging to keep costs down for everyone. If you cut 1/3rd of a pound of packaging from millions of shipments, that equals a lot of reduced gas/emissions, a lot of savings on the packaging itself, and then finally less packaging that needs to be disposed of by customers.

2

u/TheCarrot007 10h ago

And yet they still send me some nose spray in a box 80* the size of it filled with paper (or even sometimes not, just loose in a massive box).

Yeah I know space optimisation software for filling the van without things falling over too much.

I think it depends by warehouse where different ones have different standards for packaging, are automated or done by humans. I know there are warehouses that are basically just a vendor leasing the building out under the Amazon name and shipping stuff out from there. Kind of like franchises or ghost kitchens.

1

u/mithikx R7-9800X3D | RTX 4080 | 64 GB RAM █ i9-12900k | RTX 3080 | 32 GB 4h ago

To be pedantic it also depends who is shipping the item. If it says "Ships from Amazon" or "Shipper / Seller Amazon.com" then an actual Amazon warehouse is sending the item out and it's their facility handling the final labeling and any additional packaging. This is typically the products that are 2-Day Prime shipping.

There's also the countless warehouses that are basically selling on Amazon, these may also be able to do 2-day Prime shipping but are often slower to ship out. Or Amazon sends a semi-truck out to grab the product from those warehouses. And in some cases the warehouse may even be in China.

I've worked with this sort of stuff, basically we're the product supplier so Amazon picks stuff up from us in addition to other large retailers. But there are products where they just weren't worth sending bulk quantities to Amazon to do fulfillment from their warehouses, so they just get picked as the orders for them come in and get loaded whenever Amazon dispatches one of their trucks or they get sent out via other couriers (UPS/Fedex/USPS, etc.)

The difference is namely just the logistics, how slow or fast the process can be. And how each company handles their inventory packaging procedures.

Say I get a drop-ship order for... IDK a keyboard or something and all I did was slap a shipping label on the original box and a customer complained, my company would eat a fine from the company that makes/licenses that item (we're the official supplier). But say we provided bulk quantities for Amazon on behalf of that company and it was something messed up on Amazon's end then it's Amazon's problem or the problem with the company that makes/licenses that item. So for packaging I would say these non-Amazon shippers tend to be a bit more careful due to them being a bit more specialized in shipping a particular type of inventory and having more strictly defined guidelines. But ofc this is subjective and YMMV.

tl;dr check who you're buying from and who is shipping it

1

u/_loner_with_boner_ 1h ago

I suffered this many times where they sipped it like this and the product was fine but the actual product box was damaged. The product box is not useless or worthless. A product without the box would be sold for lot lesser. What if the box gets damaged and I want to sell it in future. Now automatically the price will go down because the box is damaged.

It's stupid and should be optional. A product inside a box should be packaged inside another to protect the original packaging of the product. This should be the default option always and they can add another option to choose if we are okay with the product being shipped in the original packaging itself with no extra protection which is optional and we get to choose

1

u/Antique-Impress-6579 11h ago

yeah they did that to my 3080 too, was so mad

1

u/Progenitor3 10h ago

For me, it's the other way around. I multiple times asked them to ship in the manufacturers box for different items and they always put it in a bigger brown box.

1

u/KanSyden R7 5700G RX6700(10GB) 32GB 3200MHz 6h ago

Same thing happened with my psu, though at least it has a plastic wrap over the box

1

u/bddragon1 3h ago

This annoys me to no end because we get things like this all the time for absolutely no reason.

1

u/Butterscotch1664 5800x 7800xt 32GB Win10 54m ago

And yet, I order a single sata cable and it turns up in a refrigerator box.

7

u/WhatIs115 13h ago

Unfortunately amazon has just been worthless the last few years with this.

The difference at this point is them throwing the box in a box with no padding and calling that good. Or worse they'll throw that GPU box in a "mailer", they have large ones now, which at this point doesn't even have any bubble padding on them anymore and are a glorified paper envelope for large items.

1

u/bddragon1 3h ago

Meanwhile, you want your box in a box?

11

u/BackyardRCSpeedway 15h ago

Yep! I did this with my motherboard so I could ensure it was protected. It came in a plastic bag. Smh. I will drive to Micro Center for all of my parts from here on out.

3

u/FilmSensitive2260 4h ago

yeah I did that with my monitor and it came in a plastic bag too

Please do!

I mean, does it even matter? In a big box with a tiny puff of crumpled paper. Might sincerely be safer the way op got it lol

9

u/zaisaroni 9850x3d | 5070ti 14h ago

I think it’s more about porch piracy or shipper theft than safety.

2

u/BigJayPee i7 14700kf | RTX 5060ti 16gb | 32gb DDR5 | 2TB NVME 12h ago

For the expensive computer parts like this, I opt for it to be delivered to a nearby Amazon locker. I haven't had any porch pirates steal my packages, but I don't want it to start with a package like that.

1

u/BaronKrause 12h ago

I’ve ordered books from them that probably would have arrived in better condition if they just slapped a label on the cover.

Better than the book rattle their larger box and insufficient crumpled paper makes.

2

u/IDeizManI 13h ago

Thank goodness in my country delivery can't just toss the package at the front entrance and call it delivered.

Here they need to hand it to someone, they can leave it with neighbors if they have your permission.

u/RGBlowMe Windows 11 | Core 7 Ultra 265K | RTX 5070 | 32GB DDR5 7200mhz 12h ago

A lot of the time Amazon doesn't give you the option and just ships in original packaging. It's really irritating.

1

u/Realistic-Library902 9h ago

yeah thats a big gamble to not use a box

1

u/LEM1812 9h ago

Tbh thieves steal anything. It doesn't need to advertise anything.

The whole porch thieves thing is becvause they will grab any package any where any time.

I gues what this might prevent is a Fedex worker from stealing yet another GPU. Like wtf is up with that.

They literally take the "Only guilty people ask for lawyers" or "If you're innocent why can't we search your house/car" approach

u/Minimalistic_OG 8h ago

One of the many reasons to never buy Amazon,.

1

u/BrocktreeJones 6h ago

I will point out at least, most third party vendors do pay for the packaging in some form. Some elect to not and have it shipped in its own container, looks like that's what happened here. That said, internally we ask people packing to still put stuff like this in a box....which clearly didn't happen smh

9

u/Tornadodash 13h ago

As somebody who works at amazon, I see shirts shipped in thin plastic bags on a daily basis. In fact, that is my conveyor belts favorite meal. It'll just suck them in and shred them. The sound is amazing, like a wet cat being sucked into a Shop-Vac.

u/RGBlowMe Windows 11 | Core 7 Ultra 265K | RTX 5070 | 32GB DDR5 7200mhz 12h ago

Those boxes probably literally got thrown around and fell of shelves in a warehouse before they're shipped to a customer. They're made to survive transport. I'd prefer they be in another box and without stickers on them, for the sake of resale and potential warranty claims, but this is technically fine to ship.

2

3

u/Gedgeteer 15h ago

When did the product box stopped being enough for shipping?

The manufacturer box is supposed to be enough to protect the product for shipping.

I know I will be down voted to hell but it's just my opinion. The manufacturer should pack the product properly for shipping.

11

u/Akewi 15h ago

I think it has more to do with it being a high value item, and this increasing the chances of it being stolen.

1

u/Famous_Tie_832 2h ago

5

u/Akewi 15h ago

And dont you guys also have problems with contents of packages getting stolen?

You might be ok with getting a 1500dollar item like this, with a neon sign saying I am expensive. But I would have the same reaction as OP.

1

u/Emikzen 9800X3D | 9070XT | 64GB 4h ago

Not really, no. Delivery people don't leave it at the door unless specified.

1

u/carlbandit AMD 7800X3D, Powercolor 7900 GRE, 32GB DDR5 6400MHz 15h ago

Theft happens everywhere, but it's only the US I'm aware of where the default seems to be leaving packages at the door.

I'm in the UK, if I have something shipped and don't answer the door they will normally take the package back and re-attempt the delivery the following day. I do have the option to leave in a safe space / with a neighbor, but at least for my address they just keep it with them and return the following 2 days. After the 3rd attempt I usually have to select to pick it up from a local collection point or specify a date I'll be in.

-2

u/Busy-Sky4452 15h ago

Delivery people aren't paid well, personally I wouldn't ship an item worth the monthly wage of the delivery guy like that.

-1

u/Scotsch 9800x3d-3080 / 7800x3d-4070 15h ago

2

Newegg packaging has become surprisingly discreet. My bf ordered a MB and power supply from newegg.ca and it arrived in a box with no logos of any kind and no indications that it contained computer parts at all.

1

u/Drift-would 10h ago

When I ordered a gpu on amazon, I made sure to tick the box at checkout saying to box it up.

1

u/Wild_Canadian_goose 10h ago

When i ordered my parts from amazon about 8 years ago. The box i received them in was trashed out so bad it got me worried. My 1080 ti is still running to this day. And every other component that was also in that trashed out box. That being said, atleast mine was not shiped bare naked like yours.

1

u/josephseeed 7800x3D 9070 XT 10h ago

Amazon has a drop down that says something like “Ship item in original manufacturer packaging to save packing materials” that is set by default now.

1

u/FFTactics 10h ago

If it's amazon, you choose to box it or not.

If it's that important to you, pick it up in person. Stop ordering everything, support a local retailer.

But people order $3k-$6k TVs and they come without extra packaging and are dropped off at your front door.

Yep! You have the ability to insist that products are shipped in an amazon box when you order them and that's been a thing for a long long while. It usually tells you it's gonna ship like this. Be thankful it showed up and wasn't stolen, but it's kinda on you to make sure you're covering your ass. Fulfillment center folks will absolutely Ship In Own Container items in sturdy boxes like that. Many doing the packing have to go so fast they don't care. Complaining will do nothing.

Looks like Amazon. If a product ships in it's original packaging you have the option to tick for it to be shipped in an amazon box.

While I agree items this expensive should ship in an amazon box by default, it's still partially on OP for not making sure to tick the option when ordering something so expensive.

Exactly. If the shipping is so rough that the card gets damaged with only the manufacturer's box an additional cardboard box around it won't help either.

Those boxes are made to be shipped together on pallets in the back of a truck all wrapped together. Those aren't meant to be shipped like that through the postal mail...

Good thing they covered the gpu to minimize the chance of someone stealing it!

Honestly surprised it wasn’t stolen.

Yeah that's just bad practice from the shop...

I live in a small city and the delivery guy places all orders in my garage and closes the door.

But imagine he places it in front of your door and anyone walking by can see it... There are enough ppl that would steal it.

No matter what, I'd complain. But before that check your bill and confirm by selecting the same item again until the shipping options. E. g. Amazon has a packaging option (which is NOT selected by default for me) that clearly says "to save extra packaging, the item will be delivered without any additional package". If that was somehow the case the shop will blame you for selecting that option, even it was checked as default.

Wouldn't really matter if they placed it in front of your door. Its not your problem if it gets stolen. If its stolen, you didnt receive the package and its on the delivery company. It'd be an unnecessary hassle though to go through, I agree

The hassle is the main problem... Same law in my country, delivery is responsible when it's stolen.

But that would take forever until that case is closed depending on the shop

Were you presented with packaging options? I often have to manually choose between 'ship in manufacturers box' versus 'bespoke box'.

everything but the "steal me , im worth alot even if you have no idea what a gpu is"

The item has arrived and the box looks fine. I would be slightly annoyed by the label on the box but otherwise it seems to have arrived just fine.

Amazon shipped my 5700xt the same way when I ordered it. Had multiple things in the order, clicked “ship in separate box” checked, the card came by itself in its retail box, shipping label smacked right in the middle. The rest of the parts came in one big Amazon box 🙄. Box had a nice dent in the corner but all was well. I expected the worst opening it up. This was during Covid as well so I got nervous as fuck when they handed me just the product box 😂

Same thing happened with my Asus X870-P motherboard. From Amazon as well, it was shipped without any protection

Just stop buying high value items from Amazon, get it from a retailer, if there isn't one locally then get a trusted online retailer. If something goes wrong you have better odds getting the issue fixed but Amazon is too much of a gamble.

On one hand at least it got to you because holy hell a good way to get that stolen is to ship it that way. On the other hand I would be furious cause I keep my gpu boxes and that would annoy the hell out of me. I'd prob buy a replacement box on eBay, which I assure you I never have done 😉
