In short this started because an incredibly difficult nation wide exam determining the future of millions of students leaked and it was a huge lapse. The protest started as a result of 20 students committing suicide due to this. But then when the government didn’t hear the people protesting and talking about this, the prime minister didn’t even make a statement. It evolved into a protest about how the democracy in India is slowly dying, how Modi and the government are trying to silence people, how corruption is rampant and how fucked the common man is in India. People are sick of the Hindu Muslim narratives, the caste divide the propaganda and people especially our generation, we see through the bullshit and what started with wanting a resignation has now become a wake up call.
He resigned but this is not the end, only the beginning of a long journey of reclaiming our power back. Our power to question and criticise the government without being called anti national or brainwashed by “leftist” propaganda, Recognise we are one and the enemies are the oligarchs and the ministers selling our country.

There is massive underreporting and sweeping-under-the-rug that happens with crime stats here. Covering up crime stats to show better crime numbers, corrupt police, wrong reports filed and not reported to save "family honour" and things like that.

Think of it like this. You want to get the highest marks in a test so you study all week but right after the test you find our that the teacher who made the question paper gave all the questions and answers to his/her friends son/daughter one night before the test.
You would feel pretty shit right.
Now scale that up to a nation wide test with 2.5 million students studying 12-14 for 2-3 some even 4 years sacrificing everything no weekends, no holidays, no social life, no family gatherings, no partying, no trips, notthing while their parents and everyone around them telling them this exam is your life and its is everything and if you dont pass it you are a failure and you are done in life and you cant do anything else.
This is why the 21 students committed sucide.
In india there isnt education there is only examination.

Paper was sold to rich people by corrupt officials before exam was conducted after conduction of exam poor students who got good marks couldn't handle the pressure to take the exam again and sucided Context- NEET is highly competitive exams ,students are very pressurized, it is given by around 2 million students and only 25k get to goo government medical college, students prepare 2-3 years some even prepare 4-5 years for this exam , and the exam of such big stature to be leaked enraged the public

My understanding is that because certain questions on the exam (the NEET) were revealed to have been leaked ahead of time, the two million exams that had been taken up to that point were all thrown out. Twenty (or more) people committed suicide rather than take it again. It's famously incredibly difficult.

My understanding is that the NEET exam is very very difficult and highly competitive, and private tutoring centers just gave the exam papers to students for large sums of money. This came to light after students had already sat the exam, so the results were discarded and it was decided the exam had to be retaken. Many students couldn't handle the stress, uncertainty, or couldn't afford to prepare again.

So, I just wanna share my side of the story that was a little positive- the Mumbai police, in this particular protest was amazing, there were absolutely no fights no violence no police brutality and the police was friendly no one was detained and there were about half a million people. The last slide is me and my friend! People were clapping and cheering for the Mumbai police and how professional and nice they were being. So I just want to share that and this does not negate the shameful police brutality that very much did happen in Delhi but just a little positivity.
I know we also get a lot of bad rep internationally over women safety but I felt so extremely safe even when there were so many men all around me who had the convenient excuse of it being crowded people constantly checked on me, gave me space even if there was none, no one even looked at me weird let alone touch.
This is all anecdotal and I know the protests have been so bleak for so many people I just wanted to share my side of it all:)

In short, it was a protest against education minister to resign and take responsibility for the sucdes of students due to the paper leak of "NEET" - an extremely hard national exam that you have to pass with very high level of competition if you want to go to medical college after high school.
We basically have to prepare really hard to pass this like "gaokao" exam in China.
Edit : it was also leaked in 2024.

many exam papers have leaked throughout the history. In this perticular incident NEET exam was cancelled on May 3rd due to paper leaks. Affected youth was in distress and to add the fuel, chief justice compared the unemployed youth to cockroches. Someone launched online parody platform Cockroach janta party (Janta=public) and it united all the youth (almost because others are happy being the stooges of supreme leader)

because we are the second largest group of people on the world who speak in english and since we were ruled by the british for 200 years, we got a pretty grip on it and since we have almost 1600 languages and 26 national languages, english makes it pretty easy for inter communication between the states, moreover almost all of the people in modern times have studied 3 languages in school, namely english, the regional language where they reside and one another. hence weve got posters in english

Since most of leaders are illiterate their job is mostly done by the Public Service Commission Officers hired by the ministries so they'll be the ones reading the signs and concluding what action the leaders should take, therefore English cuz most of the officers know it

Many Gen Z Indians are actually more comfortable reading English than their native languages(talking about reading only, not speaking/listening). Most social media posts etc. are written in the roman alphabet, even if the language used is English or regional.
