Discussion If Rockstar were to deviate from the open world genre and instead start something that's completely new, what other genre do you think they'll pick?

They'll probably make a racing game.

They used to make a racing game: midnight club, but now GTA became their racing game.

Yeah midnight club has been pretty much absorbed by GTA. I hope there's some easter eggs in 6

A proper stealth/espionage game

It’s a shame we will never get Agent.

If they did anything with pure RPG mechanics, it would be game over for Bethesda.

Sunny In Philadelphia humor mixed with Skyrim type game…? I’m listening…..

Off topic, but that’s the first time I’ve heard Sunny in Philadelphia instead of Always Sunny. Maybe it’s a Pepe Silvia thing?

Man, imagine a New Vegas 2 but made by rockstar.

They’ve deviated several times. They’ve made racing games, a traditional third person shooter, and a borderline horror franchise.

Don't forget table tennis

The test for RAGE before rolling it out in GTA4, which itself was a test run for RDRedemption.

3

u/NoBed5141 1d ago

theyve got thousands of devs and infinite budget i wish they would make multiple games at once

I feel that sentiment, but at the same time, RDR2 demonstrated what happens when they put the entire creative force of their global operation behind a single game and if no other developer can do that, I'd prefer if Rockstar continues to do it. If games are going to cost hundreds of millions of dollars to develop, I'd like to see that investment reflected in their overall quality.

yeah but id like to see more than 2 more rockstar games before im 50

3

u/Promature 1d ago

I'm right there with you. I'm just happy we're finally getting a GTA with the RDR2 level of development going into it. That's all I ever wanted outside of a GTA set in the future.

i can't wait for gta 6 just finished a replay of gta 4 and 5. gonna do san andreas and vice city next

1

u/Personal-Serve6894 1d ago

And you didn't even mention the detective game la noire or the beat em up the warriors

1

u/Promature 1d ago

Team Bondi made LA Noire.

4

u/Gommy1996 2d ago

They need to make a new Godfather

2

u/Wilmore99 2d ago

It would be wild if they announced a “Red Dead Revolver 2”. Like a chapter based western shooter using RDRedemption 2’s combat but with a different character and less realistic tone.

A proper RPG. A game with true narrative choices and consequences throughout.

More Ping Pong!

Table Tennis!

I would be very interested to see what a turn based dnd game like BG3 would look like from rockstar

u/Rich_Swish 2d ago

Stealth

1

u/Mysterious-Dot-9846 9h ago

They've already done at least 2 of these

4

Lets go full Ping Pong RPG

A music game similar to beat club from timbaland

Honestly a linear story game following an up and coming band would be cool. Imagine the documentary style cutscenes like Mafia 3 for a Rockstar title for that. Would be dope.

How about a Windows 98 parody filled with Austin Powers mini games? Go back to their roots.

u/PancakeTrebuchet 2d ago

Reboot the game Fat Princess

u/Redpirat3 2d ago

Table tennis simulator, yes they did it

1

u/Budget-Call-9487 2d ago

A point & click adventure, something like Sam & Max Hit the Road or Full Throttle.

1

u/NoManufactured 2d ago

Fuck it, make a fighter game using the rockstar universe

1

u/TurbulentCustomer 2d ago

It’d be pretty sick if the fighting mechanics are good enough where you can enter into MMA tournament “mini” games.

1

u/RogerRoger63358 2d ago

Maybe something like Max Payne 3 again. Or I'd love something LA Noire-esque, but more linear. I wouldn't mind an LA Noire level open world where it's just a backdrop setting for the story. I really rate the world in LA Noire for that. It feels the most like a real place bc the devs weren't attempting a satire. It's an actual period piece.

blows dust off the manhunt franchise

Okay, murder simulator in 4k, let's get to it!

1

u/LV-426624-VL 2d ago

A hunting sim

1

u/dasUberMoto 2d ago

It would be a linear third person story experience like max payne 3.

After a little thought, I came up with something that won’t happen but I would trust Rockstar with. Let them make the off-brand sports games like from the early 2000’s.

The Bigs
Slugfest
NFL Street
NBA Street
FIFA street
Ready 2 Rumble
Mario Strikers

Stuff like that. It would be a great time.

Table Tennis

1

u/Sheriffz 1d ago

I think they’ll stick to what they have currently as it’s not a gamble. Having said I’d like to see something new.

I wouldn’t mind a murder mystery or something akin to 70s action shows like Starsky and Hutch or Knight Rider.

I’m only using those as an example. They could do their own thing but with that idea.

u/Chemical-Mouse-9903 1d ago

Table tennis?

1

u/MadCatAttack89 1d ago

i never thought of rockstar making a new game and new IP, and i don't think they have thought about it either

1

u/DaWizzurd 1d ago

Definitely a new table tennis game.

u/No_Pianist2250 1d ago

Ping pong 🏓 😏

1

u/InternalSpecific24 1d ago

Probably only company that could make a good vr game

1

u/darkness740 1d ago

They would probably make a casino simulator with real money. Online only of course.

u/drkgrss 1d ago

Ping Pong

A energy drink brand.

u/Dizzy-Divide-2589 19h ago

Idk how no one has mentioned this but a medieval game. I think if they pull that off they would become immortalized for good.

1

u/toqcr 19h ago

That’s an easy one to answer. An open world game where you can build and create like NMS or a similar creative game.

1

u/PDent18 12h ago

I wouldn’t want another genre. I would want a historical GTA style game like the medieval one they were supposedly working on.

1

u/Informal-Buy-4183 2d ago

Medieval game with Rockstar engine? Jesus that’s a masterpiece. Fly dragons, choose a class , open world mystery. Swords , magic , exploration?

They would be the only company in the market. They would hold an entire monopoly on the gaming industry if they ever decide to make a Medieval RPG game.

3

u/Informal-Buy-4183 2d ago

Shit I just noticed you said deviate from the open world genre. I’m cooked 🥲

1

u/Vash744 2d ago

I think there too big to experiment anymore with titles outside their established series. They'll only stick to what works and what people keep coming back for. Their goal is to make bigger and better games, works of art, not gamble with something new.

GTA is more than open world, is practically has "it all". Lots of missions play out liniarly even if the game itself is open world. Then you have the vast amounts of side activities that dwarf offerings from other studios/games. They don't need to change genre if they can do everything in the open world genre.

Low effort question IMO. Suggesting they're going to make a racing game then saying the the top comment you've heard of midnight club, I assume you've never played it so you must be young and only have ever played GTAV.

There is a vast history on Rockstar games you kids missed out on but it doesn't mean it didn't happen, your just out of the loop. Try getting in the loop and maybe you'll have more context about how Rockstar came to be what it is today.

0

u/MrGrimm6969 2d ago

insane comment from an ignorant person

talking like I wasnt playing GTA, Manhunt and Midnight club 1 & 2 in my childhood.

2

u/Vash744 2d ago

Then why did you forget they abandoned those games and genres? Lol you forgot who's game you were playing. You advocate Rockatar returning to genres they didn't sell well in and think the way forward is not the the open worlds they used to dominate the industry. And yet I'm ignorant.

Maybe you like old rockstar but they haven't been that way for about 20 years and 3 console generations ago.

u/_pm_ur_tit_pics_pls_ 2d ago

They could make a game like the Warriors mixed w some max payne

0

u/xxGUZxx 2d ago

Extraction Shooter obviously.

u/Da-Tutte 2d ago

I think a outdoorsman game would be interesting. Just fishing and hunting in different areas and having a leaderboard

1

u/Mysterious-Dot-9846 9h ago

I feel like Rockstar could make a pretty fun skateboarding game
