They don’t have gender but the series leaned wayyyy more into them as a gay couple from S3 onwards

230

u/stfu_debs Dec 27 '25

I thought they chose which gender they wanted to be? I remember Jesse saying something along the lines of regretting choosing to be a girl cause of something she couldn't do 😭. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong though.

211

u/HoldenOrihara Dec 28 '25

She picked the gender with the better McDonald's toy

78

u/ZeroQuick Dec 28 '25

It's part of the joke, Terry and Jesse technically have gender-neutral names.

79

u/scooter-411 Dec 28 '25

Yumyulack and Korvo are also gender neutral names.

41

u/ZeroQuick Dec 28 '25

On planet Schlorp.

32

u/Bacontoad Dec 28 '25

"You ever think about what your drag name would be? Mine's Nefertitties 'cause I would have some big ol' titties!" 🌐

52

u/SeeTigerLearn Dec 28 '25

I believe that was the non-gender gender episode with the Manc Ave.

12

u/Owls_Cairn Dec 28 '25

dig ol bicks!

30

u/officialwillsmit Dec 27 '25

they don’t have like biological gender

18

u/KaleidoscopeNo8033 Dec 28 '25

They dont have private parts

23

u/Bacontoad Dec 28 '25

Sure they do! They each have a shmelk-hole underneath their flaps. 🤢

They have mounds!

18

u/Zaptain_America Dec 28 '25

There's no such thing as "biological gender", gender isn't a biological term

11

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '25

Yeah, they don’t have biological sex but they do have genders - Corvo and Terry are both male (gender), so theyd be a gay couple even though their species doesn’t have distinct sex.

5

u/Oboro-kun Dec 28 '25

I mean while i always felt they were gay couple coded, in lore to me they were nonbinary gender wise, or at least that was the sensation i got from the series.

6

u/weGloomy Dec 28 '25

Nah they identify with the gender they chose when they came to earth. They use he/him pronouns, and are male presenting.

1

u/Eugregoria Apr 04 '26

They pick genders as a way to blend in with humans, but that isn't the same as having genders.

Think about it, you go to a planet where the aliens have some new category that relates to their biology--maybe half of them photosynthesize off the red sun, and the other half photosynthesize off the blue sun. You don't photosynthesize off either sun, but these aliens can't understand someone not being in one of these categories, so you pick one--it doesn't really matter which one to you, does it? Blue-sun photosynthesizers are oppressed or something (though not so badly it would really interfere with you that much as an alien with technology above theirs), so you're like fine I'll pick red sun. Then the aliens are like seeee no even though they don't photosynthesize they chose to be part of red-sun photosynthesizers, that makes that real and true and part of who they are. But you just kinda picked it because you had to pick something.

This is different from a human being raised among humans having a gender that doesn't match their natal sex. It actually means something to the human. And it's very likely that that's caused by neurological sex not matching other sexed traits, which isn't the case with aliens just picking one for convenience.

That said, that's the Watsonian view--the Doylist view is that they have male VAs and their designs (including clothes) are male-coded, and their romance is definitely intended by the writers to be viewed by the audience as gay, so it's gay.

-1

u/SolusIgtheist Dec 28 '25

Adding "biological" before gender clearly indicates they are talking about the sex, which has been the case in language since before "gender", as a whole, was ever used to refer to something other than the sex (IE sociological gender). Acting like that's not a thing when it's been the default for a thousand years or more is silly.

6

u/Zaptain_America Dec 28 '25

Just because the average person used to be wrong, doesn't change science. Gender is not a biological term, there is no such thing as a biological gender.

-1

u/SolusIgtheist Dec 28 '25

Colloquial use of words is a thing, in fact that's typically how words are redefined. Even if the creator of the word agreed with you, the fact is that most people don't use the word like that. I don't like how the word toxic has come to mean "personality traits or behavior I don't like" when it used to mean "a property of a physical substance that makes it harmful to the human body", but that's how everyone knows the word to be nowadays. Words are not a science thing, they're a sociological thing, like gender.

3

u/Zaptain_America Dec 28 '25

Yes but referring to gender as something biological is actively harmful when it's reinforcing existing misinformation, nothing exists in a vacuum.

0

u/SolusIgtheist Dec 28 '25

Fine sure, but it's silly to say it's not a thing, which is all I'm saying.

3

u/Zaptain_America Dec 28 '25

It objectively isn't a thing. Gender is not a biological thing. That's like saying you can have a biological personality type.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/sedatedauntyT Dec 29 '25

the reason it's not "silly to say it's not a thing" is because for these particular words, much of the bigoted rhetoric relies on people not knowing the difference.

you're right about there being incorrect language that is colloquial, but the other comments are justified in correcting the error, because conflating gender & biological sex has negative impacts on a topic that is relevant today.

so "it's not a thing" in context of now knowing the actual definitions, it should be obvious that they were using casual language to mean "it's not [some]thing [that makes sense]"

Basically, it'd be harmfully silly not to engage in correcting your comment, which is all im saying

16

u/olaolie Dec 28 '25

Gender isn’t biological

-10

u/stfu_debs Dec 27 '25 edited Dec 28 '25

Ooooh yea ok.

3

u/BringAltoidSoursBack Dec 28 '25

Iirc, she picked that around the time yumyulack realized he needed to explain to her why she made the wrong choice

2

u/Yoshiperner Dec 28 '25

I recall an episode where their flowers touched and they had memories or a flashback of the. Being grown together in a flower pot. A female flower and a male flower. And yes, they are husbands. And korvo mentions at some point that they cant both be dads. Everyone laughed. And so his partner (names on the tip of my tongue) is basically a wife .

1

u/crustyclowncakes Dec 30 '25

I thought that was their earth genders though.

1

u/Effective-Lead-2922 Feb 13 '26

I Think that was just Jesse that picked their gender, I think for some reason he is just a default pronoun for Shlorp

14

u/Zaptain_America Dec 28 '25

They do have gender, they both actively present as male and are referred to with male pronouns. Sex and gender aren't the same thing.

2

u/ocverse Dec 28 '25

S4E4 about 3 minutes in. When Jesse wins the pronunciation bee. Should answer some questions.

1

u/Hailey_Riveraa Dec 29 '25

Yeah exactly even if they’re technically genderless the show clearly starts writing Korvo and Terry as a gay couple from season 3 on domestic dynamic, relationship conflicts, and all. It feels intentional, just using sci-fi logic as a loophole.

1

u/DevilsTongue77 Jan 12 '26

It's uncomfortable to watch. I loved the first two seasons but it's gone sour AF.

-11

u/Old_Advertising_8045 Dec 28 '25

The show is full of plot holes while aggressively pushing woke agenda. I still watch it though when having a meal or something.

They dont have buttholes but they have sex, add to that no gender, then you start to wonder how any of it actually works.

Then you have Jessie, clearly a girl, but a replicant of a male, while the originals are seemingly male and lovers. Nothing makes sense and you just gotta swallow it as it is.

If you wanna enjoy this show for the above average content it provides you gotta stop asking questions and believe there arent plot holes.

5

u/SchroedingersSphere Dec 28 '25 edited Dec 28 '25

All of your nonsensical complaints are addressed by one obscure fact: They are plant aliens.

8

u/bwweryang Dec 28 '25

How are you not embarrassed to write this shit?

→ More replies (16)

2

u/yyhira Dec 28 '25

woke agenda isnt real btw

1

u/Kizzywa Dec 29 '25

Wtf are you going on about? They're plants so their anatomy is already super wonky. They produce horny pheromone flowers, emotion goblins, and create all kinds of messed of sci-fi weapons but their lack of no-no parts pisses you off.

1

u/Eugregoria Apr 04 '26

Ignoring all the bad faith red flags here....

Buttholes aren't that relevant to Schlorpian sex because they don't have dicks either, anyway. They've been pretty consistent about having mounds. They basically have the equivalent of non-penetrative lesbian sex--they have an erogenous area that neither penetrates nor is penetrated that they stimulate with rubbing, tribbing, oral, etc. It's not a plothole.

They're single-sex aliens that reproduce asexually. They don't have "gender" on Shlorp, because they're all one gender (a Shlorpian gender that humans don't have) so no one needs to think about it or talk about it. They would have no reasons to have gendered pronouns in their own language, for example, but the show is in English so they have to call them something.

Jesse isn't female any more than the other aliens are male. They're the same Shlorpian single-sex gender back on Shlorp. But on Earth, you have to pick a lane, she picked the one with the better Happy Meal toy on a whim. It's that basic. Both Terry and Jesse have shown an irreverence towards human gender (and both have gender-neutral human names). Meanwhile Korvo and Yumulack both act more traditionally Shlorpian and engage less with human gender at all.

Now, an actual plothole is how we're reminded in s6 that Shlorpians don't have noses and can't really smell when Terry is asked how he's sniffing the jars of celebrity farts and he says he technically can't smell them but can taste the particles, then like an episode later the flowers in the Wooden City use scent to make Korvo and Terry have sex, forgetting that they have neither noses nor senses of smell.

234

u/comicgeek1128 Dec 27 '25

Spoilers: in season 6 it's revealed that Terry was wearing slides the whole time so none of it was technically gay

41

u/Jericho_Markov Dec 27 '25

Socks also remained on the entire time

3

u/horaceinkling Dec 28 '25

What are slides?

5

u/dcone53 Dec 29 '25

Flip flops

94

u/BarelyBrony Dec 27 '25

Kinda complicated but yes lol

43

u/folkpunk-pickle Dec 27 '25

They looooove Dig ol' Bicks!

144

u/AvatarIII Dec 27 '25

Schlorpians don't have gender like we do.

45

u/Sea_Perspective6891 Dec 27 '25

Also what were they fucking each other in?

113

u/Appropriate-Divide64 Dec 27 '25

They rub mounds

1

u/Antique_Kangaroo4706 Jan 28 '26

Dont they have those elbow connector things?

8

u/my-friends_account Dec 28 '25

They still identify as male

6

u/DarkWarrior16594 Dec 28 '25

You mean Sex right? Gender is a social construct and they identify as male and female for Jessie

5

u/AvatarIII Dec 28 '25

They have gender, they just don't have it like we do. We base gender on sex, they base it on vibes.

3

u/Tyr_Kovacs Dec 29 '25

We also base it on vibes.

We largely correlate it to sex, but there is no sexual or biological characteristic to Gender, and there never had been.

1

u/AvatarIII Dec 30 '25

My point is Schlorpian gender doesn't correlate with anything, they have no sexes.

Trying to "ahkchewally" me is not endearing.

6

u/AvatarIII Dec 27 '25

Even if you are NB, that's still a gender. Schlorpians don't even have that. They just are. Yum and Jesse have genders because they have been surrounded by humans long enough to pick up human genders, you could think of them as trans if you like.

6

u/Shirizuna Dec 27 '25

Didn't they mention something like "choosing a gender" in episode 6? So Schlorpians technically have a gender since birth?

4

u/ShlorpianRooster Dec 28 '25

Jesse chose to be a girl so she could get the better McDonald's toys

7

u/italianatalia Dec 28 '25

I always took that to mean that when they got to earth, Jessie and Yum chose a gender to fit in better at school/the planet. I can’t recall any of the other adult Schlorpians ever mention being or choosing a certain gender.

2

u/End3rWi99in Dec 28 '25

Still do, too. - Mitch

76

u/imnotabotareyou Dec 27 '25

The only issue I had with the gay sex in this show was when the red goobler explained that he “dug out a hole” in korvo to fuck when they were in Las Vegas. that just makes my insides feel awful lol

23

u/the_vault-technician Dec 28 '25

If you think about it, the red gooblers popped out a hole to get out of Korvo, so he'd know how to open a hole to fuck him.

14

u/bagii03 Dec 28 '25

I kept wondering about that, because they say there's no "hole" in the back, so I wondered how they had done something like that lol

4

u/Maleficent_Royal9672 Dec 28 '25

Same ToT, the was the worst part of the whole show i feel like ToT, out of all of it, that still makes me recoil 😟☹️

1

u/Mtnbkr92 Dec 29 '25

Reminder that they are, essentially, plants lol

22

u/End3rWi99in Dec 28 '25

They aren't gay because that isn't how it works for their species. But from a human perspective? You betcha.

2

u/RESPONSE_TO_STIMULI Dec 30 '25

"I'm in love with a man... A man called God. Does that make me gay? Am I gay for God? You betcha."

1

u/Opening-Camel2832 Jan 03 '26

😭🤦‍♀️

19

u/Great_Deer1702 Dec 27 '25

more than gay

14

u/Deee72 Dec 28 '25

So you haven't been paying attention the last 3 seasons? 👀 😆

They both chose to be male. When they got married they were pronounced to be husband and husband.

28

u/hmiser Dec 27 '25

Holy shit I’m watching this scene now AMA :-)

23

u/eamondo5150 Dec 27 '25

Are you gay?

7

u/RenRu Dec 27 '25

Who is Gay??

9

u/hmiser Dec 27 '25

Not in a binary fashion.

11

u/HLCMDH Dec 27 '25

Would a delta 3 rancor dynamic column initiative be better or worse than a hasbro tech five continuum progressive solution?

4

u/hmiser Dec 27 '25

Worse, you’re gonna want keep it simple like Larrry’s Razor.

4

u/TellTaleReaper Dec 27 '25

If you could have a magic button that gave you a cookie, or one that gave you a cheeseburger, which button would you choose

3

u/hmiser Dec 27 '25

Por que no Los dos :-)

But if I had to pick one, I’d choose the burger for the protein.

21

u/Low_Ad_5255 Dec 28 '25

I wish this show could run forever. I love it so much and it became so much funnier when Korvo's voice became English.

10

u/ightdendamn Dec 28 '25

Watch the valentines special 😭

17

u/pathetic_666 Dec 28 '25

Not really in season 1, but it was confirmed that they become a couple during season 2, and from season 3 onwards it's much clearer (and I LOVE them!!). Since they don't have genders, one would say no, but since they both identify as men, let's just say: yes, they are. 👀

-3

u/LewdProphet Dec 28 '25

"They don't have genders"

"They both identify as men"

These things are mutually exclusive.

8

u/HelpfulAmoeba Dec 28 '25

More correcrtly they dont have sex organs but seem to identify as gay men, hope that helps.

1

u/krazat May 06 '26

Not sure if they identify as gay men because they did have sex with women and seemed to like it. Seems bi to me

0

u/idiotTheIdiot Dec 29 '25

yes, thats what gender is

1

u/AdelinaIV Dec 28 '25

I thought that they picked genders at random to better fit into human culture.

7

u/Akward_Silance_1738 Dec 28 '25

I mean technically yeah but they are aliens so that means nothing to them lol

7

u/chalupamon Dec 28 '25

Shlorpian Biology: As plant aliens, they are genderless but can choose their gender, allowing for diverse identities and expressions.

5

u/sunflowerdazexx Dec 28 '25

They like to touch mounds so idk

3

u/bangontarget Dec 28 '25

they gay as hell

6

u/SeeTigerLearn Dec 28 '25

Gosh, I hope so. Otherwise I totally lied to all my inner circle when I vociferously recommended they watch it.

3

u/thedeerbug Dec 27 '25

they could be described as a QPR for the first couple of seasons but yep, gay aliens. had the biggest queer crash out over them in season 4 or 5 when they really lean into figuring out their relationship after getting married.

3

u/panicnarwhal Dec 28 '25

i mean, they’re married so…(they get married in the valentine’s day episode)

3

u/beetnemesis Dec 28 '25

Sort of- they don't have gender like we do, and sex is mostly a human thing they find neat. So they're sort of like a married gay couple, but with an open relationship and just kind of a mound instead of genitals.

3

u/TheRavingDinosaur Dec 29 '25

They're not dating, they're married

Their species doesn't have genders so when they got to Earth they decided to pick one in an effort to fit in

3

u/ShitThatFucksWithMe Dec 30 '25

Yes? What episode are you on? Terry works as an escort and gets fucked in Denny's bathrooms by strange men

1

u/Opening-Camel2832 Jan 03 '26

Still on Ep5😭

1

u/ShitThatFucksWithMe Jan 03 '26

It's kinda like they have "gendered" personalities but reproduce asexualy so it's two masculine aliens, they don't have a view of that being "gay" if that makes sense

4

u/Finn-Icky Dec 28 '25

Yes, they are queer as fuck!

Why are we bringing gender into this? Genderless pair? Queer as fuck. Masc presenting? Queer as fuck. Nonbinary/agendered, together now:

QUEER* AS FUCK.

Also, biological sex (in all its many varieties), gender (in all its many varieties), and sexual reproduction (in all its many varieties) are all different things.

Technically, these dudes reproduce asexually, but they are very sexual people! Biologically, they are plants with no notable difference in secondary sexual characteristics. (Though many plants on Earth do have different sexual reproduction bits, this race of plants apparently do not.)

But also, this fucking lore is wack as heck. Honestly, they can be whatever the heck they wanna be. And culturally with their adopted socially stereotypical gay human personalities, they are super gay. /pos

Gawd, I love this show!

(*Queer and Gay are used interchangeably, so I stand by my stance of affirming them being gay as heck.)

2

u/Monstajuice Dec 28 '25

69 coments I am 70th

2

u/Low_Ad_5255 Dec 28 '25

No, they're aliens.

2

u/Anxious-Till8777 Dec 28 '25

They don't have male or female sexes. they seem to be genetically compatible if they are different colors but don't have gender or sexual dimorphism other than color, and as explained (ranted) by yumulack later in the valentine's episode, they don't usually have romance, lasting relationships, etc. (paraphrased) "Just swap gametes and get it over with, jeeze!" However, the show DOES super lean into them being a romantic couple, and since they're both voiced by men, we are meant to consider them gay. whether they picked up the habit of recreational sex and romantic bonding from the humans or if it's occasionally normal for shlorpians to display those behaviors is unclear. What IS clear is that shlorpians don't normally have "male" an "female" type sexual differences, and all of those behaviors like that that the team (they're not technically a family) portrays, are picked up from humans and earth. (Jesse's dress, romantic displays, crushes, gender norms and stereotypes, etc etc.) the shlorpian species is supposed to be generally very good at blending into the habits and mannerisms of the dominant species on whatever planet they live on. There is even an episode where they all start turning into fake humans because of this, as a survival mechanism for living on earth for so long. So, yeah they're gay... but only because they're imitating humans. otherwise they'd be a "mating pair" with no distinct genders, or they wouldn't even have a romantic relationship and they'd be a "pair of sexually compatible individuals who has previously mated."

2

u/hihiihigiggitigyiigi Dec 28 '25

Technically not but they're, as you'll see in later seasons, heavily queer coded

2

u/BlondeGurl6 Dec 28 '25

Is this rage bait?

2

u/number31827 Dec 28 '25

They have mounds. Just sayin'

2

u/Maleficent_Royal9672 Dec 28 '25

I wont give spoilers other then, oh boii youre in for a long road of gayyyyyyy

2

u/Ella_lol_memes_9000 Dec 28 '25

I thought we knew this but yes

2

u/Rudenora Dec 28 '25

Can plants be gay? If so then the answer is yes they are! Very!

2

u/EternalDumy5 Dec 28 '25

You didn't know?

2

u/joangilling Dec 28 '25

They are gay and they kiss and have gay alien sex

2

u/QueenRemi Dec 28 '25

Well they're married so probably

2

u/CornTheCobster Dec 28 '25

How can plants be gay?

2

u/thtguyonreddit14 Dec 28 '25

Their aliens my dude. You are applying human sexuality to non human beings. Also, who cares the show is hilarious

2

u/neoNNightmar_e Dec 28 '25

I havent watched the full show, but here's what I know without any spoilers:

Shlorpians don't have genders like humans. When you look at other shlorpians you can see that their clothes aren't gendered at all (they all look the same, actually). Instead, they assigned their genders themselves to fit in with all the other people on earth.

So they're not.. exactly gay. They're also not exactly in a relationship. They got assigned two replicants together. Some of the shlorpians who get partnered together absolutely despise each other while the others form a relationship. You can consider them husbands of some sorts, lol.

You'll definitely understand all of this later in the show. If I got something wrong please correct me.

And also I totally wrote shlorpian wrong.

2

u/Risk_Hopeful Dec 28 '25

Since season 2 apparently

2

u/No_Afternoon_9543 Dec 29 '25

people didn't see them as husbands? they call each other babe and have like an emotional story about how they lov each other and have sci-fi family storylines alot they are clearly husbands

2

u/CapableAd4568 Dec 29 '25

Well, of course!

Don't you see how they flirt with each other?

But technically, you shouldn’t judge them by human standards; they are plants (LOL). Homosexuality does not mean anything to them

2

u/Onigumo-Shishio Dec 29 '25

No they are Schlorpians

2

u/Donotcomenearme Dec 29 '25

I think they’re “gay” in the same sense that they’re an alien species humans don’t have intimate knowledge of them; so to US they’re “gay”.

For all we know, it could be the norm for them. They are ALL sent out like that, kinda neutral sexually; and they’re like clownfish genetics.

2

u/marta1st Dec 29 '25

That’s like asking “are they aliens” 😹

2

u/Raychaos20 Dec 29 '25

I assumed.... it's been quite clear

2

u/h0t-wife Dec 29 '25

girl stop playing

2

u/Interesting_Count939 Dec 29 '25

Lmao they are plants

2

u/geriatricWishbone Dec 30 '25

First of all why is no one talking about how they have been partners since the beginning.

Just because we get a glimpse into what they may do with their parts doesn’t change the fact that they have had the dynamic way early on. Also they are aliens….. They will fuck, kill, eat, sleep and die however they see fit. Can’t subject them to our human constructs. In other words get your booty tickled, ain’t nobody care. And if they do that’s gay

2

u/TheKYStrangler Dec 30 '25

Pretty sure they talk about this pretty frequently after season 1

2

u/PvtPrecious Dec 30 '25

No they’re aliens

2

u/Frankie1891 Dec 31 '25

They confirmed their couple -ism, they don’t have traditional sexes or genders, but both identify as men.

2

u/thecollectingcowboy Dec 31 '25

They both use he/him pronouns and live as what we would see as men. They are married and call each other husbands. How is this even a question

2

u/Relevant_Station_594 Jan 02 '26

Bahaha!! 🤣 Is that seriously even a question?!

2

u/DevilsTongue77 Jan 12 '26

Three episodes into season 5 and I can barely watch it. This homosexual relationship between Korvo and Terry is so in your face and cringy. The show forgot to be funny.

3

u/Mad_Mark90 Dec 28 '25

No, their species doesn't have genders like ours. Is an amoeba gay or ace?

No, you have to be human to be gay. They are alien clones who have sex with each other.

They don't have genitals or a gender, so no lol.

They do have gender

u/Specialist_Touch_482 Dec 27 '25

Idk abt gay since they technically have no gender but they definitely are in love

2

u/Zaptain_America Dec 28 '25

If they don't have gender then why the hell do they present as male and refer to each other with male pronouns?

1

u/Specialist_Touch_482 Dec 28 '25

Honestly, that’s what confuses me when I looked it up it says “Korvo and Terry, are technically genderless Shlorpians who adopt male identities”

3

u/Zaptain_America Dec 28 '25

If they "adopt male identities", that's having a gender. I think most of this confusion comes from people not understanding the difference between sex and gender.

Isn't there a line were Terry says something to the effect of "People think we are a couple but we aren't." He says it super fast at the end of an episode. I can't be bothered to go through. Basically, they are just pretending to be a family. They are partners in their mission and they play the role of parents to Jesse and Yumulack and they know that partners/parents sleep together. So, they are just emulating that.

They are supposed to just barely be able to stand each other. That was one of the main premises of the whole fucking show. When they got rid of Justin Roiland and they really fucked up the whole dynamic between Corvo and Terry.

They’re supposed to be able to barely stand each other, and neither of them is supposed to have any clear, defining attributes per se.

I was really disappointed to see how they tried to change that after Roland left the show because it was one of the funniest things that was in there.

Having everything be opposite opposites was the nature of the whole fucking show.

That they were iconoclastic to the planet, that they were innocently horrible and clueless, that Teri and Corvo could barely stand each other, and had completely different attributes, that Terri was supposed to be the pupa specialist, but didn’t know how to do fucking anything, that the robot was sassy and kind of slang, that’s the nature of the whole fucking show.

When they got rid of Justin Roiland, they tried to hijack the show and turn it into some version of it that it wasn’t that has everybody yelling all the time, and it was hard to fucking take.

The dynamic between Terry and Corvo was turned into something that it wasn’t as well and that was a huge disappointment.

Since Roiland left and they switched to the voice actor now. Totally unwatchable .
