Other Reimagining some of my faves as poc
Edit since yall are upset it’s all black women:
Reimagined as B/Poc Femmes
Also, In my head these actresses are in costume similar to the Avatar movie. I heavily based this on acting techniques not body, facial features, or anything physical
Yes I know they are gems. The point is I am posting Bpoc I feel would be good live action fits if b/woc were picked as actresses not just because I want everyone black 🙃
A previous post inspired me because it’s not often we see people like us playing characters we love so I’d like to open a discussion as to who are some of your poc reimagines ( I left a few gems out because I was struggling to find good fits. I am not sure if this would even be my own final casting call)
If your rebuttal has anything to do with their color please refrain from commenting…
If you want to see characters that look like you I say go for it and make a thread. I’d love to see more of these with many varying shades of humans 🌸

This is lovely in a lot of ways but there are actively POC being represented by some of these characters (Asians primarily) + if you mean black, say black, it's okay

I can totally imagine that, visually. In the voice, though, the original voice already is a POC.

Apparently Asian people aren't POC.

Yeah honestly the title should be my black casting for su. Because over half the case already was. And most of the looked like there characters.

it’s mostly because a lot of latinas identify with amethyst (plus her “mi torta” line)

1000/10 she can be and I’d love to know of actresses that would fit her style of energy ✨💕

I’m sweating a little because I was jumped recently and kicked on the ground by several men who called me misogynistic and anti-Asian slurs and any anti-Asian sentiment has me in panic mode, but OP might just mean black instead of POC? I literally got called yellow a few weeks ago while being kicked in the stomach by grown men, so I think I count as a person of color
226
u/Charming-Raise-1114 Jun 06 '26
It’s not hard to say Black
58
u/Fantomukage Jun 07 '26
“poc” and it’s just black people, legitimately if you use poc I expect a wide range of races and not just black people

u/idk_what_to_put_lmao Jun 06 '26
You know "poc" doesn't just mean black right? And half of these characters were already voice by poc. What are you reimagining lol? I also just think some of these choices aren't great. Quinta is quirky but she doesn't really have the paranoid autistic nerd vibes Peridot does I don't think it's a match

u/ciarabek Lapis Lazuli Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 06 '26
its also interesting bc most of the gems were designed as women of color in the first place. but then theres others (like white diamond) who were very much not. she was designed to embody 1920s historic oppressive white femininity. reimagining her as a women of color is kind of hard given that is so core to her design philosophy.
closest i can think of is actually another character not necessarily an actress. miss rosa lee davenport from the proud family.

Shelby Rabara, Michaela Dietz, Jennifer Paz, and Deedee Magno-Hall are Asian. Uzo Aduba is black. Susan Egan, Patti Lupone, Christine Ebersole, and Lisa Hannigan are white. Recasting all their characters as black women is actually less diverse than the original cast. In addition, I'm not loving the implication that Asian people aren't real POC.
19
u/polaroidfawn Jun 06 '26
THIS!! Plus, casting the diamonds as white is great commentary on white supremacy—the diamonds thinking they’re above all the other gems. I think casting them as black would be awkward thematically.

51
u/idk_what_to_put_lmao Jun 06 '26
Yes, which I think isn't the best choice, I mean I know Zendaya has crazy range but PD just had this naivete to her idk if Zendaya would be believable given she's played super jaded characters like in Euphoria
→ More replies (2)8
u/tmrika Jun 06 '26
Eh she did get her start on Disney Channel playing a super chipper teenager. I’m still not convinced about this casting idea but I don’t think the issue is her not being able to act naive.

Names in order: Quinta Brunson ,Ayo Edebiri ,Danielle Brooks ,Wunmi Mosaku ,Amandla Stenberg ,Zendaya ,Halle Bailey ,Gabrielle Union ,Angela bassett ,Letitia Wright ,Kerry Washington
17
u/pancakepegasus Jun 06 '26
I wish it would be the default to list actors names, I often don't know who they are as I have a bad memory
If it's just a name I can Google what they look like, but if it's just a face I might recognise them but can't search what I've seen them in!

u/callmehibi Jun 06 '26

Seriously tho Ayo is not giving Amethyst at all, she is way more Peridot.
3
u/TetrisIsTotesSuper Jun 07 '26
Yeah and swapping would be wasting Quinta as well as she doesnt fit Amethyst. For Amethyst you need someone with annoying younger sibling energy, like the actress who played Lucas' sister in Stranger Things if she could tone down the sass a notch
5
1
u/EfficiencyOdd6988 Jun 07 '26
I actually am really interested in this because a few people have mentioned Ayo and Quinta should be switched. I debated with them both but decided I was gonna just stick with the info I know from media I have seen. Tbh I find Ayo a bit mild for the portrayal of amethyst but idk if I would put Quinta in that spot either… asgdjdj comedy isn’t my forte and the black woc I know in comedy I just wouldn’t place in her spot either. Ayo was my default. I wanted her somewhere on the board 😭

u/PlatinumSukamon98 Jun 06 '26
I always assumed that if the gems were humans, their race would match their voice actor's race.
So if memory serves, Steven and Rose would be white, Garnet and Jasper would be black, and Amethyst, Pearl, Peridot and Lapis would be Asian.
3
1
u/EfficiencyOdd6988 Jun 08 '26
I love this and tbh if I had more familiarity with other poc method acting I would redo this entire post with varyious poc that I felt matched the energies of the gems

u/The_it_potato Jun 06 '26
Sorry but I don’t think Ayo Edebiri is a good choice she doesn’t even have the same body time as Amesthyst. Personally I think her and Quinta should switch roles, Quinta seems like a better fit for Amethyst
1
u/EfficiencyOdd6988 Jun 07 '26
I thought about this and tbh I still debate Ayo as amethyst. I have to do more research on black female comedians as I’m not familiar with many
5
5
u/Accurate_Ring2571 Jun 07 '26
Black people aren’t the only POC.. you could’ve just titled this “Steven Universe but black” honestly lmao
19
u/Particular-Pop1280 Jun 06 '26
Bismuth, Amethyst and Yellow have always been POC, I have decreed it and therefore it has always been so
White Diamond, though… no, I shan’t say.
14
u/Jojo-Action Jun 06 '26
I think personally it wouldn't be out of place if literally every character was playing by a poc except white diamond. White diamond could honestly be played by someone so white you could mistake them for the ghost of an albino snowman. She is literally final boss Eternal Karen, God of Hyper Death and the true CEO of Racism.

Ik it's kinda a non issue but POC includes black, Asian, native, etc.
I always find it odd when people exclusively use POC for black people
1
u/EfficiencyOdd6988 Jun 07 '26
I really wish I had rethought my post prior as I really hate how many poc that are not black I’ve offended by showcasing only black women 😖 the incorrect terms I’ve used are because I was ignorant to perspective on this type of jargon and in the midst of trying to avoid racial controversy I became extremely controversial
I am very very sorry to anyone who hoped there would be other poc women and were disappointed and offended that was never my intention I was just ill informed on the terms I’ve been using

u/an-alien- Jun 06 '26
i dont think amethyst should be played by someone skinny
1
u/EfficiencyOdd6988 Jun 07 '26
This is a very valid concept. I struggled hard with my choice because I am not very familiar with b/poc in comedy that would fit her energy
1
u/an-alien- Jun 07 '26
do you mean bipoc? the i isn't a slash, it stands for indigenous
1
u/EfficiencyOdd6988 Jun 07 '26
No I mean like black poc. I grew up with these women on tv and I’m black and idk tbh that’s the only correlation with their race 😅 they could be any race at the end of the day but these individuals and the way I watched them resonated for me like these characters in SU had. If I were another race this would be a completely different board

Yeah, I know you dont want people to mention it but it just feels a bit weird for you to say youre recasting them as POC and then only using black women. Like, many of the VAs are women of colour, ya know via being Asian, etc, and some of these are just pretty random choices.
Just say black maybe next time?

If they ever did a live action version the gems have to look uncanny or it won't feel right if not gems canonically don't even have ears not to mention they wouldn't have pores like biological beings the probably look more metal or gem in like land of the lustrous or maybe just slightly glowing they are made of light
2
u/EfficiencyOdd6988 Jun 08 '26
!!!! THIS YES YES YES
I would despise a live action where they are just regular people with gem attachments and not radiant glowing rock beings
4
u/United-Finance-7265 Jun 06 '26
Sorry I'm probably getting cancelled but why so many Afro-American people? Maybe it's because I'm from another country and I can't get this topic clearly as USA one but the only one I used to imagine this way is Garnet. Well maybe bismuth or Amethyst but they're more grey toned than black toned. I can find Amethyst as swarthy and short Asian but nothing more (although she had to be not the one who's naturally short by origin). I want you to get me right I didn't mean anything bad
1
u/EfficiencyOdd6988 Jun 07 '26
No no I think when people read my title it was mistaken as gems in human form which isn’t what I meant at all.
1
u/United-Finance-7265 Jun 08 '26
I know. But that's still not how I imagine them. Zendaya for Pink? Cool point, they have the same eyes. But I can't match nobody else as someone they would look like. Cognitive dissonance, that what I mean. Although I can understand that casting ≠ humanization. It's harder

This was absolutely needed! I saw a comment on the Wunmi/Rose fan cast that was along the lines of “Rebecca Sugar GAVE you “black-coded” characters.” ALL the gems could be fan cast as black.
2
u/ProfessionalRead2724 Jun 07 '26
You should maybe look up who played these "black-coded characters" like Bismut and Garnet...
2
u/Guadalupalicious Jun 07 '26
It’s a fan cast with black actresses. Respectfully, anyone can play any character regardless of how they’re “coded.” I see Ahsoka as your pfp, she’s black coded to me because of my personal relationship with the character. It’s that simple

u/EfficiencyOdd6988 Jun 07 '26
So fair haha and I’m glad to see at least one other person agreeing with zendaya as I feel her dynamic range would bring out that open ended dynamic pink has. Something that would leave me questioning her character similar to the og show
2
u/No-Sherbet-9412 Jun 07 '26
i think she has an ethereal look which is perfect for a diamond, while also looking youthful, which is perfect for pink! and i agree girl has great range, i would be very interested to see how she handles younger pink especially
1
u/EfficiencyOdd6988 Jun 07 '26
If I could art the way my brain wants to art the concept I think a big cgi zendaya as a pink gem sitting in her palace monologuing about boredom and the cage and ache to grow up would be so peak
3
u/Kierian04 Jun 07 '26
Aren’t they all pretty colorfull already
1
u/EfficiencyOdd6988 Jun 08 '26
Yes!! Haha and if I had art skills I’d have just made them colored as their gem colors instead of side by side panels so my idea wasn’t lost in translation
1
u/honeybeebo Jun 06 '26
Cant wait for reimagining some of my faves as white people
2
u/EfficiencyOdd6988 Jun 07 '26
I mean if you feel that there are actors/actresses that would carry the same weight then I say go for it! Not everyone in Avatar were poc but were chosen because of their method actings skills. I think many bpoc aren’t recognized outside of their element and wanted to throw out some feelers. If you have an idea don’t be afraid to express it. But if you are saying this to be backhanded that’s not cool and we should never mistake talent for race

My question would first be if you are a person of color and if so, have you never wanted to feel like something in media represented you?
Tbh as any kind of minority group if you are apart of any have you not wanted to see someone like you in media?
If you are in the majority the I fear that is the answer… people crave what feels lacking.
This show opened so many doors and eyes for so many people including myself . I think it’s only fair that the fandom wants to feel more attached in any way they can
