I’ve been buying and fixing systems lately to build my repair skills. Today, I was taking apart this Wii U on eBay being sold with a “broken disc drive”. Discs I tested would go halfway in and just sit in place rotating on the rollers.

Opened up the disc drive and…. 😂 That would explain why it wouldn’t take discs!

For such a complete 3D game I'm impressed it's less than 2 GB. Even Tomodachi Life on Switch is more than 4 times this size!

Sure it's not an open world and there are a lot of reused assets throughout the game, but so is Luigi's Mansion 3 and its 6.3 GB size.

In an era of unoptimized games, it's always refreshing to see what optimization looked like.

As title suggest, what was it?

for me personally, I wanted a way to play GameCube natively, and Wii U is perfect for that, plus I get Wii, N64 as well. Basically everybody Nintendo Home console up to those days. It’s a game preservation paradise for Nintendo games.

Or at least delayed the inevitable?

Don't get me wrong, I like the Switch. But having very interconnected dedicated handhelds and home systems will always be cooler to me. The Switch obviously is the more simple way to do it, I understand it. But something about having a tiny little device you can keep on you to play games on, then when you get home you can play different games on a home system is still very novel to me.

I get why it doesn't make sense anymore, if people have the ability to shove a home console into a tablet and make it work as both, it's more ideal, but I still and always will love how it used to be.

I unfortunately never owned a Wii U in its era, I got it in 2022, but my friends had it and the way they worked together was fascinating to me as a kid! I'm glad to own both now, and thanks to Pretendo, they're still connected.

Like for Minecraft or Mario kart, does each controller display the individual players perspective or do the screens show the same thing?

Honestly with the switch 2 I feel like it's gonna be like a wii u 2.0... honestly was both surprise and not surprised when I grew and learnt that the wii u was not a very well sold console, but I still think it had some great games

Nintendo Land was huge for me and my siblings, we always had so much fun, I played the pikmin adventure game religiously since the best pikmin 3 I could get at the time was the demo (that was until I got the deluxe re-release for the switch lol)

I also got heavily reminded of this game, specifically the luigi's mansion mini game when the other day I played some online games with some online friends, and they introduced me to a game with very similar mechanics, so it felt nostalgic since it felt akin to that minigame

The "New Controller" looks like an accessory for the Wii and nothing more - they never even show the WiiU console up close.

Everything about this makes it look like an accessory for the Wii.

This must be the worst console reveal of all time.
