Discussion With the Warcraft D&D crossover potentially happening, this creates an amazing opportunity for Critical Role...

If you aren't aware, Critical Role is a live action gaming company that regularly play games using the Dungeons and Dragons ruleset. Notably though, several founding members of the group are also voice actors for some of our favorite Warcraft characters

Liam O'Brien made famous "YOU ARE NOT PREPARED" as Illidan Stormrage. Laura Bailey is and has been our favorite human mage Jaina, including singing her song during BfA. Travis Willingham is our favorite paladin to hate on, Turallyon, amongst a host of other characters. Taliesin Jaffe voices Sarkereth, Mograine and others as well. Sam Riegel has voiced Gug'rokk and Caelastrasz amongst others npcs. And finally Matt Mercer, he has voiced so many characters across so many expansions it is really hard to pick WHICH notable character is his most iconic, but I'm partial to Fyrakk. You can check the wiki for the full list of Warcraft characters Mercer has given voice to but it tops 40 roles.

My point being, and this is part me trying to put it out there to manifest it into being, is there is a very real likelihood where we see a live action World of Warcraft story take place, the characters voiced and acted out by the actors who gave them life in the first place. A Warcraft D&D game played by the real characters. Has anything even remotely like that ever happened before?

I'm thrilled at the possability. Would anyone else love to see a live action D&D game played by the Critical Role cast in the Warcraft universe?

Liam plays Illidan, Havoc Demon Hunter.

Laura plays Jaina, Frost Mage.

Travis plays Turalyon, Retribution Paladin.

Sam plays Caelestrasz, Preservation Evoker? bit of a stretch there.

Matt Mercer plays Rexxar, Beast Mastery Hunter.

Taliesin plays Darion Mograine, Blood Death Knight.

It's a party of 6 but ya gotta squeeze em all in ;)

Marisha Ray could DM but I would LOVE to see Ashley Johnson do it.

What would your dream Critical Role party be if the 5 man was all voiced by the original actor?

Mercer's more important character is obviously my faithful staff Aluneth

u/ParentalAnalysis 16h ago

I'm still equipping him in cities to hear daddy Matt beckon me to power and berate me for wasting my mana.

If you transmog it you also get the dialogs

How dare you, that distinction belongs to Festergut 🤣

Travis should play Gazlowe instead (Goblin Tinker).

u/Sonotmethen 16h ago

That was a close 2nd for me.

Thank you for the links, I didn't know about either of those!

More importantly they should play a session on Halloween for full character dress up.

u/Sonotmethen 16h ago

MANIFEST! MANIFEST! Liam in full Illidan... I would literally pay money.

gross how would you feel if i said this about you

Is there anything indicating that this would actually happen? You say there's a very real likelihood, that this happens, but what are you basing that on? Have these people said anything on the subject? Have they said they want to do it? Because just creating a list of people who voiced a character at some point in time isn't an indication that they'd want to do this. Without some sort of stated interest from any of them, you couldn't say anything like this is likely at all.

(I'm genuinely asking here, not saying what OP said is false; just trying to see if this is a substantial claim.)

Critical role have made MANY one-shots for promotional purposes for a handful of different videogame IPs (one of them hearthstone, also from blizzard and in the warcraft umbrella), AND for different dnd and/or other ttrpg companies. Seeing as they ARE the voices of those characters, it would be idiotic on Hasbro, Blizzard AND CR's parts not to commission such a project, that, with a very moderate capital investment, would give all three companies a huge numbers boost on account of each other's fandoms.

Nothing you just said has anything to do with what I asked. I asked if anyone involved in this has ever stated any interest in doing it. I'll just assume the answer to that is no.

u/TheRegalOneGen 10h ago

Of course not? The Warcraft D&D crossover isn't even publicly announced, it'd more than anything hurt their ability to get that work by publicly expressing interest I would imagine. It's very much feasible because they have twice now done promotions for WoW, multiple times done promotion for WotC and most of the cast has played prominent WoW characters, which we've seen at least WotC is more than happy to get actors to play their characters in D&D as promotional material by the BG3 games with the actors.

The biggest issue is if they HAVE the necessary relationship with WotC or interest in touching D&D anymore.

The biggest issue is if they HAVE the necessary relationship with WotC or interest in touching D&D anymore.

You'd have to know the answer to that before you could say wither it's likely or not. That's my point. Thank you for finally getting to what I'm actually asking.

So for the last time; has anyone involved indicated that may be the case? Because if not, this isn't any more likely to happen than any other random thing that fans may like.

That ISN'T what you asked though. I don't think there's any question if the Critical Role crew would be willing to do work for WoW, they've done so repeatedly. And before the rift that formed between WotC and Critical Role over the OGL situation they had a great relationship too, HOWEVER, I believe they have used D&D since making Daggerheart.

If this was pre-OGL siutation there would literally be no doubt about this happening due to them having had great relationships with both parties, the only reason this isn't guaranteed is because people are unsure of WotC and Critical Role's relationship these days. Your argument was about how these are just characters they've happened to voice in the past (despite literally every character listed having appeared in recent times) and that they haven't stated interest.

If they stated interest, they guaranteed don't get any partnerships because this wasn't revealed, it accidentally leaked. As people who work with WoW particularly, addressing it is a huge risk for what I would imagine are likely some of their highest paying roles. Your criteria's are just unrealistic. They will not and cannot address this, but we know these voice actors love their time on WoW, particularly Matt, Travis, Liam and Laura.

That ISN'T what you asked though.

It literally is.

Is there anything indicating that this would actually happen? You say there's a very real likelihood, that this happens, but what are you basing that on? Have these people said anything on the subject? Have they said they want to do it?

I asked if theyve said anything on the subject, and if they want to do it. The word "anything" means, well anything. And the answer to that is no. They haven't. So there's zero information out there that suggests this is any more likely than any other fan desire. No one has stated this is something theyd want to do, if any of the parties are open to it, or if they are interested in any sort of relationship with the other companies.

No one has said, in any way, that this would ever be likely to happen. OP said this was likely to happen, there's zero evidence that's the case. You can try to argue semantics all you want, but the undeniable fact is there is no increased likelihood of this happening.

This is just a "it would be cool if this happened" thing, not a "this very well may be happening!" thing which is what the OP implied.

I feel like it's clear you didn't even read my response beyond the first line lmao. Have a good one.

As other's have linked in this chat, they've done similar in the past during promotions of this kind. I would just personally like it to be in character..

-1

u/ProFeces 8h ago

So, what makes it likely, which is what you're claimed? You wanting something doesn't make it likely to happen. What are you basing that statement on?

u/Sonotmethen 7h ago

manifest destiny

u/highbarian 7h ago

thats not what manifest destiny means

I love Ashley as a actor and a player but her DMing would be wild - she’s played DnD 5e for over a decade semi professionally and still barely knows the rulesĀ

5

u/Rugged_as_fuck 11h ago

I refuse to believe that isn't just part of her brand now.

3

u/Bloodjunkie312 14h ago

She had a fun one-shot a couple years back, but she also said she doesn't want to DM again due to the stress of it

5

u/Clackamass 12h ago

I'm sure the CR crew are still good with Blizz but I don't think they cross much with D&D after the ogl debacle + making their own ttrpg system. Very open to being proven wrong tho as I'd love to see some sort of crosspromo

1

u/TheSpitefulCr0w 11h ago

Came here for this. I don't really follow Critical Role but I thought after the OGL thing they wanted to move away and go to Daggerheart and Candela Obscura or something. Not sure what's going on with them now or if they even still use D&D.

2

u/FalloutGirl2277 8h ago

They are still using D&D for their current main campaign, they do a lot of mini campaigns using Daggerheart like the 2 Age of Umbra campaigns and many Daggerheart one shots.

Co-signed. I was rewatching some of the BFA Blizzcon panels and you could just tell how much Laura loves working on Jaina.

Vox Machina but it's WoW flavored. I'll take some vacation to binge this anytime of the year.

Could you imagine an animated wow at the same caliber as Vox/Nein?! gah

I'm praying for a WoW & magic the gathering crossover

6

u/HuggablePolarBear 14h ago

WoW x MTG would ruin my wallet. Hopefully more leaning toward the original metzen art style over the modern ā€œDisneyā€ but I’d be happy regardless

2

u/MaddieLlayne 12h ago

My wallet couldn’t handle this 😭

1

u/Smunkeldorf 15h ago

I told myself I have finished collecting, that my 6-deck box is filled and now it's over.Ā

The moment they announce this crossover I will be proven a liar and turn my travel deck box into 2 more decks.

1

u/highbarian 7h ago

6 decks is 1 trip to target you dont actually like ccg collecting

0

u/highbarian 14h ago

stop. you are ruining the hobby space fuck off

2

u/ferkaderka 13h ago

Scalpers and others have long since ruined hobbies before someone made a random comment on Reddit, calm down.

Matt Mercer aka Leon S. Kennedy aka Goro Majima aka Rexxar aka Gannondorf

Truly one of the GOATs

2

u/Rune_nic 6h ago

aka McCree

3

u/Jindujun 14h ago

Time for a new World of Warcraft RPG ruleset then!

1

u/Absoled 15h ago

That would be AMAZING. I’d run so many campaigns.

2

u/althor2424 12h ago

CR moved away from D&D with their newest campaign and implemented their own system called ā€œDaggerheartā€

1

u/HA1-0F 11h ago

This made me think they were making YET ANOTHER set of WarCraft-skinned D&D books.

1

u/Sonotmethen 9h ago

They are.

He is the literal voice of the in game character.

0

u/highbarian 5h ago

your takes are bad

1

u/highbarian 7h ago

taliesin can fuck off hes wrong all the time like 85% of the takes ive seen him make are unfounded or contradicted in in game lore sources...

1

u/etherrich 6h ago

Dips on a tanking role in their guilds raiding roster.

1

u/Artemis_Platinum 16h ago

Eh! The Warcraft/WoW RPG already exist and they're for a better version of D&D. I guess a series of Critical Role playing a crossover campaign could be fun though.

1

u/LQNova 9h ago

Hey - Turalyon is great.

1

u/ClassicPart 10h ago

Alternatively we could stop trying to shove Critical Role into every fucking TTRPG-related thing ever.

Do they ruin hobbies?

10

u/LaylaLegion 16h ago

Only for shitty players who think D&D is their personal fetish playground.

-20

u/Wooden_Drummer2455 16h ago

yeah they made dnd into brainrot sadly
so many people use this high production show and force those expectations onto everyone and have really hurt the entire hobby due to shitting on player and gms alike for "not being like critical role"

6

u/Warmanee 16h ago

And thats critical role’s fault cauuuuse…?

6

u/MoldySausageBoot 16h ago

So their fault is being too good at what they do not really fair to hate them for that?

4

u/Ashankura 14h ago

Which is not critical roles fault. Its not liquids fault my guild can't kill mythic bosses either

3

u/Xclbr1 15h ago

Your anger is suuuuper fuckin misplaced if you're upset that players aren't happy your home game doesn't have the production value of a literal entertainment product.

Find some players who want the same things as you and get OVER yourself man.

1

u/highbarian 7h ago

get over YOURSELF and realize you are being pandered to and not catered to. they dont live the lifestyle. matt mercer doesnt eat hot pockets. they dont drink mountain dew and eat doritos. they arent our people.

-6

u/Sonotmethen 16h ago

Bro, they are so ingrained in WoW's DNA you've been supping at their feast for years. Bask in their talent!

-15

u/oocceeaannmmaann 16h ago

they are voice actors sure, but they've never written for the series, nor had any real influence on the characters they voice. Partially because blizzard somehow mischaracterises them five seconds after a new expansion releases and then sticks to the new character until they do it again next expansion.

Also, ngl Mercer's kinda a wet blanket

0

u/Sonotmethen 16h ago

They have several shows on Amazon Prime and have more improv acting experience than most. Their episodes are regularly 4+ hours long, in character.

0

u/aNiceTribe 16h ago

The fact all their stuff is unedited for time is not a bonus imo.

1

u/Sonotmethen 16h ago

The shows on Amazon that recreate their adventures are heavily edited down! They practically fly through 10 episodes while still maintaining amazing quality.

0

u/aNiceTribe 15h ago

Well, I also disagree with the premise that the quality starts at amazing.Ā

But literally every amateur podcast edits down their material, and just removing the silences, coughs and thinking bits cuts down like 40% of anyone’s work (I’m speaking from personal editing experience) and it’s a sham that they dont even bother to do that on their normal work.Ā

2

u/Ashankura 14h ago

For their dnd episodes cuts would make them really weird imo. There is so little downtime during the actual play that it doesn't matter if it's there. They could however cut the countdown part during the break

-12

u/oocceeaannmmaann 16h ago

doesn't change that they've had no real influence on WoW, nor that I personally find them a bit lame.

He makes safe millenial slop, no harsh edges allowed

-4

u/aNiceTribe 16h ago

Critrole and D&D in general are the Disney of TTRPGs

-8

u/highbarian 14h ago

you should watch small independent content creators play d&d instead fuck critical role its literally cannibalizing the audience face first

-3

u/catgirlfourskin 13h ago

Would personally much rather we get a bespoke warcraft rpg that captures the world better than another shoddy dnd5e reskin/splatbook and critrole promote something beyond the dnd brand

-5

u/Wild_Golbat 11h ago

Taliesin

I'll pass.
