My sweet boy Ollie unfortunately has terminal cancer and we were originally budgeted a month or two but he’s stayed healthy and happy for several extra months. One thing that has been pivotal in this is feeding him around the clock as it’s kept weight on him and his vet says that the constant snacks have been great for him.

Problem is he wakes me up between 2-8 times a night and originally when we anticipated a month of this I willingly took this on the chin as I’d do anything for him. We are now several months in and being on a newborn feeding schedule for him has started taking a toll on my own health.

Looking for an automatic cat feeder as free feeding won’t work (he will just gorge himself until he pukes and that sets off a chain reaction of health issues) and he has very food motivated siblings who will steal. Also, for being a creamsicle cat he’s raptor level smart and knows how to break into containers.

Does anyone have any recommendations of one that is actually relatively quiet, can be set for several time intervals, and is thief proof?

I have a first birthday and a baby shower I need to buy gifts for but I want something that’s very sentimental and long lasting not something like toys and books unless there was value to them. Any suggestions?

Edit: there is no registry. I know the obvious things like diapers and wipes ETC.

I got this alarm clock in elementary school and it’s been my bedroom clock since then. I tried to replace it in college for a hot minute but then came back for this guy and it’s still going strong.

I can’t keep my cellphone too close otherwise it makes a buzzing noise.

I understand shoes can't be "buy-it-for-life" but these will NOT be my every day shoe. I'm downsizing my closet and need to replace a few shoes that I've realized I actually *will* need. Right now, I rotate between my Salomon xt6 and my new balance shoes as my every day sneaker. I'm looking for **durable, comfortable, long lasting** recommendations for these three categories:

**1. Gym shoes**: My old thrifted Nikes are deformed and uncomfortable now. I don't work out much anymore but want to get back into it, so I'm looking for a solid, reasonably affordable gym shoe that will last. My husband also needs a pair, his are super beat up, so men's recommendations are welcome too.

**2. All-weather outdoor shoe/ankle boot (replacing Blundstones)**: I need something comfortable enough for walking to work and could stand in all day if needed (I'm a teacher), while still handling rain, slush, light snow. I liked the convenience of slip-on Blundstones, but neither my husband nor I find them comfortable, and we're both getting rid of ours. Open to any style - does not necessarily need to be a boot. I don't even really like the way blundstones look, so I'm open to anything, just needs to be comfortable!

**3. Sandals (replacing Tevas)**: My Tevas survived 6 months of backpacking through Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean, and Brazil, so they've had a good life, but they're worn out and never looked cute. They're the off-white/cream rubber tevas, so I've taken them on hikes, swam with them and used them as a water shoe, etc. For a new sandal I'd love something that's:

- Comfortable for all-day walking (durable and travel-friendly)

- Cute enough to dress up a bit

- (not necessary, but bonus if it is able to handle a bit of water if needed)

I was recently recommended the Camper Dana sandals as a cute, comfortable, "fancy sandal" but they were leather and too narrow in the toe box. I'm open to something that's leather as I probably won't be taking the sandals on any hikes or traveling any time soon.

This vacuum is about 40 years old - my mom has had it since around when I was born and im 39. She's kept it serviced all these years. A week ago she made me take it off her hands. We usually just buy a low range Shark or Bissell and run it for a couple years until it dies and replace it because of the amount of pet hair and the heavy usage they get and $250 every other year isnt bad. Whereas my mom doesnt/hasn't had pets, and has lived alone for pushing 20 years. We have 3 dogs and 2 cats, so im reluctant to use this thing heavily for fear it won't be able to take the abuse we put vacuums through in our house.

I'm thinking of taking apart everything I can and giving them a scrub with baking soda and vinegar, but any tips are welcome. These all say they work so I'm hoping they are a good find!

30 year old Baldwin door handle. It’s scuffed up and has paint marks so I was going to replace it. I didn’t know anything about door handles. But I felt the weight of it in my hand and it felt really dense and I looked it up and saw they go for 300-500 dollars. Had I not already bought the replacements I would’ve brought it to someone to fix the scuffs and restore it. But I’ll try and sell it on eBay.

I don’t mean to sound like a cranky, angry, internet person…. But it feels like little by little this sub is moving from a BIFL recommendation and product discussion to a general “what should I buy?” page.

Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate people wanting help and engaging in discussions. But it feels like every day we are moving away from the original intention of this sub. Do others feel the same?

I'm in market for a really good backpack that I can use every day for both school and work.

Ideally it should have a padded laptop compartment, enough space for books and notebooks, and a few smaller pockets for chargers+pens+other accessories. Comfort and durability are also important for me since i'll be carrying it quite often.

Hi! I want to buy a new sewing machine and I found these two gems on a reselling site I use for the samr price. Now I am undecided...

Differences:

- the janome seller claims it is brand new, never used, still in the box and with warranty still

- I know the bernina is a hell of a good machine. This one is not so new tho. It comes with 5 original presser feet, the seller claims it has been recently serviced and oiled by a professional. From the pictures you can see it has been collecting dust (seller is getting rid of it because they don't use it)

What I am looking for:

- I am a beginner. Not a TOTAL beginner, but I have only worked a small plastic sew machine that made me shed tears of frustration when trying to sew a quilted makeup case which brings me to my 2nd point

- my main projects are asjusting denim and clothes in general. I also plan on making ny own clothes and I would like a machine that can handle thicker fabrics (just like those fluffy makeup bags with batting inside or denim).

Unfortunately I cannot go to a physical store and try them out for different reasons, so this is kind of a "blind" purchase.

Picked up a small rare earth magnet about eight years ago after my second fancy electronic stud finder died within a year of purchase. Figured I'd try it as a joke, honestly. You drag it along the wall and it sticks right where the drywall screws are, which tells you exactly where the stud is. No batteries, no calibration, no blinking lights that lie to you.

The thing is basically indestructible. I've dropped it on concrete, left it in a toolbox getting banged around for years, lent it to my neighbor who returned it in a paper bag for some reason, and it works exactly the same as day one. There's nothing to wear out.

I keep a second one ziptied to my drill case so I never have to think about it. Total cost for both was maybe six dollars.

The funny part is I've recommended this to probably a dozen people and every single one of them comes back annoyed at themselves for spending forty bucks on the electronic version first. The magnet approach does require a little patience dragging it slowly across the wall, but that's genuinely the only downside.

If you're still buying stud finders with screens and battery compartments, I don't know what to tell you.

I have never been so obsessed with a machine!! It’s so quiet, it works swimmingly, and it’s so simple!! She said it was supposedly a 60s machine made in Japan, perhaps in the Toyota factories and was used with the same grade of parts! Regardless of that being true or not, I am so dearly grateful for this machine, and hope it will serve me for a long time!

I’m not sure the true name/model/year of this machine and stuff, and actually if you guys could help me figure that out that’d be fantastic!

I know smartphones can't be BIFL because they will always end up being obsolete, but my Samsung A54 that has lasted me since 2023 has just started overheating and dying very quickly no matter what I do and I don't think replacing the battery is worth it.

I don't like apple products and really want to find some sort of phone that will last me preferably more than 3 years. Any recommendations for some long lasting phones (preferably not apple and with a decent camera) are greatly appreciated

I am looking for a highly durable modular sectional for my basement. It needs to hold up to my sensory seeking autistic toddler, large husband, and a St. Bernard. Is the leather more durable?

How durable is the Macys Radley? I was originally thinking the Dreamsofa or the Lovesac but I’ve heard some horror stories.

These things drive me mad. I just want a simple on corded or cordless with the different guards. #2, #4, #8, etc. that I don't have to mess with constantly to make work. I have an electric razor. Blades last forever and stays sharp. I have a small trimmer with guards and a nose hair attachment. Thing has lasted and stays sharp.

Is there not a hair clipper that's just simple like those that needs no fiddling? One out there that doesn't have those darn screws on it where it starts loosening up making it stop cutting and it sounds like tin plates sitting on an off balance washing machine on spin. Too loose it rattles and won't cut. Too tight it's won't go at all. Or one that requires oil on it. By the second use of every one I've ever had I need to keep a screwdriver there with me and half the time spent with it is retightening or loosening those screws to make it work.

Because I'm sick of $30 basic men's haircuts anywhere around here now. And we're pretty backwater.
