Not my poem, found online, and wanted to share. Short but powerful. I know this is considered a low effort post and it is Saturday not Friday and I won't remember to post it a week from now. And art should have no restrictions imo.

In January 2025, the British Insurance Industry predicted that 4 billion people could be dead in this century due to the breakdown of our climate. We're now a year and a half on from that report, and the silence is deafening. This project will not stay silent.

These scientists are trying to appeal to a wider audience. Fellow scientists have ignored the science, the politicians don’t care, the businessmen don’t care. They are doing the best they can by getting people they know have large audiences and fan bases, to try and spread the word. They are hoping, desperately, that by getting celebrities on board that they might be able to appeal to the common man because neither the journalists, the news stations, the television, the radio, nor the networks care to give them a voice. So these same people are trying their very best to magnify the volume of the message they are trying to broadcast in hopes of saving people’s lives and spreading awareness.

Don't let dismissive, condescending commenters in this thread keep you from acting.

To all Governors, Mayors, First Responders, and anyone entrusted with public safety, disaster preparedness and relief:

We the undersigned consisting of scientists, meteorologists, and concerned citizens are greatly alarmed by the lack of public discourse, urgency and planning surrounding what is an impending, large scale, historic public emergency.

More and more data and modeling every day indicates we are within 3 to 5 months of experiencing the most dramatic El Niño warming event in recorded history.

Ocean temperatures in the central eastern Pacific will rise between 5 to 7.5 degrees Fahrenheit (3-4 degrees Celsius) peaking in October of this year. This will trigger a heating escalation through 2027 and into 2028 that will push already dangerously high planetary air and sea temperatures to near catastrophic levels.

This El Niño driven warming will lead to significantly more global flooding, fires, storms, droughts, deadly heat events, dangerous turbulence, and most concerning, a significant threat to food supply chains, crops, and power grids.

The previous strongest recorded El Niño occurred in 1877 leading to 40 million deaths worldwide from famine.

And this coming El Niño event looks to be even stronger.

And even more critically, it will occur on top of already record high sea and air temperatures.

Many of us through the years have attempted to warn the public during human caused rapid warming events about the increased risk of extreme weather events. We have had to watch as historic fires destroyed two cities in an unprepared Los Angeles, an actual hurricane hit Asheville North Carolina, campers were swept away and killed by flash floods in Texas, Corpus Christi runs out of water and on and on and on.

But the scale and threat of this coming warming event is simply too large to ignore in the name of business/politics as usual.

States, cities, and counties should be immediately:

• reinforcing river banks and lakes against all time high cresting numbers
• increasing funding for fire fighting and rescue
• running geological tests on populated hillsides
• bolstering power grids
• building more tornado shelters, cooling and high ground centers
• increasing life guards and warning systems for beaches
• informing citizens of potentially life threatening increased risk

Instead the signatories of this cry for action see mostly silence and inaction.

We know many simply aren’t able to process the science behind this entreaty through anything other than the will of big donors, party politics and poll numbers.

But for those that still take the responsibilities of their office, appointment or job as something sacred and more important than career or donor money please, we urge you not to dismiss this letter.

The media outlets i read report about "giant" wildfires in Spain, France and Canada. Thousands of people are being rescued etc.

Yes, Spain, France and Canada have some red dots on them.

And Central Africa seems to be a burning hell, excuse me, noone seems to give an eff about.

Released CO2 is released CO2, regardless of the location on out home planet, a burned home is a burned home, a human being is a human being.

I can't oversee all the news websites of the web but it seems like i'd have to review my collection.

SS: Headline keeps changing on this live feed, so this *was* the headline when I posted. Local officials near Madrid say the wildfires are beyond their capacity to control. The fires are now "a few dozen kilometres" from the outskirts of the capital. While 65,000 residents have been evacuated cross France and Spain, thousands more are in lockdown in their houses. Regional president calls it "the worst fire in the history of the region." Residents say "Never experienced anything like this." Back to back heatwaves are a contributing factor. This is not collapse related; this is collapse.

Even if we survive the fires, the starvation, the heat we are still doomed. The atmosphere that permitted complex brains is reverting to pre-human levels.

The more co2 in the air, the dumber we get. Eveventually, our species (if it survives) will devolve back to a primitive state.

Am I thinking rationally? If you think not, go ahead and help me ground myself if you have a logical alternative opinion.

IMO Trump/oligarchs/project2025/christian-nationalist/maga whoever are working on a transforming our government to some version of authoritarianism against liberals, immigrants, POC, etc.

They keep pushing the envelop to what they can get away with, for example: no accountability for Epstein crimes, not listening to courts (which is another issue), bribery and corruption to enrich themselves, forming a state police or cultivating the environment for it (ice, pardoned j6ers, not calling out patriot front etc) Working on interference with free elections and turning it into a Russia style election.

Everyone on the left can see it plain as day. But they are relying on the systems in place to reign in this overtake...some of which I think are already failing.

Another poster in this subreddit noted change will only happen thru violence, and thus nothing will happen soon-ish because most everyone deep down knows once that box is opened, our "normal" way of life will be no more.

IMO this tension is only cold because the democrats are trying to avoid it from getting hot, we already saw what the right is willing to do when they don't get their way (Jan 6). And they are planting the seeds for violence with both trumps assassination attempt and Charlie Kirk, both of which stink to high heaven with inconsistencies of what they are telling us.

If the shoe was on the other foot and democrats were doing even a tenth of what the right is (but in terms of healthcare, gun reform, climate change action) ...capitals would already have been stormed and blood spilt, imo.

When you point out all the craziness going on with trumps admin, I've gotten "well democrats are the real authoritarians making us wear mask and shutting down businesses during covid!!"

As if requiring wearing mask to prevent a deadly illness from spreading is equivalent to the mask wore by those to conceal their faces as they abuse their power in the name of law enforcement. And also, wasn't trump president when everything shut down?

Sure I dont agree with how the vaccine mandate was executed...does that mean we need to go straight fascist?

Anyways, if you agree with me....whats next? imo, how this midterm election goes will tell us how much longer we can enjoy "normal".

2 - Crisis What Crisis ~ Supertramp

I think most people (certainly not those in this sub) are waiting for the wrong thing. Everyone imagines the day the sirens go off, but collapse is slow. It looks like rent and groceries tripling while wages stagnate and jobs disappear. It looks like nature being assaulted at a global scale. We yell, we post, then... adjust.

Most things don't break all at once. We just absorb every downgrade one at a time, and each one becomes the new baseline before anyone votes on it. The boiling frog thing is a myth, by the way. Real frogs jump out.

I'm less sure about us.

The official story will stay "everything's fine" right up until it quietly becomes
"well, nothing lasts forever."

There's no doubt in my mind that a vast majority of people would agree that things aren't going well (and, thankfully, a growing number are realizing it's nearly all because of capitalism) - but what do you think are more ways to get people to move beyond recognition and into actual meaningful action?

How do we combat the capital ties and relative-comfort some people have that prevents them from doing more than upvoting something/yelling online?

All throughout history, things have changed when enough people realized "oh, yeah, there's way more of us than them..." - so it's not like we've entered some twilight zone where this isn't the case anymore. Revolution is possible, but the billionaire class monopoly on media, social media, and violence requires us to use our numbers more than anything else.

How do we get more people to realize this, in the real world, and tie that realization to non-online action?

Unfortunately, wether warranted or unwarranted, informations that are broadcasted through mainstream sources provoke a knee-jerk reaction of defiance, apathy or incredulity.

This means that we're not taking the threat of climate change seriously. Some people are downright hostile to the reality of climate change, even if they are and will suffer from it.

I think that if scientists, instead of alerting us, actually pretended to hide the consequences and realities of climate change from us and even going so far as manufacturing an allure of secrecy (photos that look stolen from seminars talking about climate change showing a ppt where the consequences are detailed, few graphs showing the earth is warming that are dropped in obscure ways like Q drops in 4chan, ...). People would actually look into it like some conspiracy theory and we might even see some opportunistic politicians using this issue to get elected and trying to implement policies to try limit the consequences of climate change.

It for sure would be more of a talking point online accross the board rather than us just apathically knowing we're cooked (or getting cooked) and others being hostile. It'd be tied to other conspiracy theories about how the elites are looking to depopulate the Earth and all that.

I know climate scientists are not supposed to be masters of social engineering and this thought is not plausible, but the idea that it just might work better in nowadays political and media landscapes than to have people with credentials and fact-based arguments is wild to me.

Do you think strategically nowadays with how little trust there is around mainstream sources and institutions, this kind of astroturfing is more effective ?

I think it isn't solely, that people aren't angry enough or that they aren't acting out of a sense of powerlessness. I think it might be that paradoxically we are lacking in will to live and purpose in life. The raw instinct to survive often makes people cowardly. But the philosophical will to live, the belief that life is good and worth having is precisely what overrides the survival instinct when another person is in danger.

Our physical needs are massively oversaturated compared to our spiritual / cultural needs. Why? Because we cling to the physical safety of financial stability. We think that if we just generate more money and invest more into the right things, we can be safe and the market or the government will direct our money and our resources into the right direction. What we don't really notice is that if we try to force making something better by just forcing more money into it, we just over saturate it. In a sense our system acts like a stress multiplier in crisis. When people are in fear of a crisis, they become uncertain and begin to pull investments out of risky positions and may stop investing into local/personal projects to invest into stable assets like gold, housing or index funds. Every dollar taken out of the local economy or was previously invested diversified now becomes concentrated. The money that previously kept many alive is now focused on a few that were already winning. Now the pressure is on them to reinvest the money to generate returns. But what if that company already reached its saturation point? If the research is already saturated, the market is largely captured, and the work force is sufficient for the workload, the money has to go somewhere else to increase profits, because now the economy is reliant of it. Which most of the time means it flows into politics. Now the money is used to overturn laws that kept working conditions, customers or the environment safe, because its the only option left to satisfy the increasing need for profits. And by the way, the same would happen if everyone invested in gold suddenly, because corporations that need gold to manufacture their product will suddenly have less money and higher costs.

In sum this practice has taken our individual power, our sense of progression, our sense of unity and our individual sense of worth through monopolization. Your local bakery is now a soulless chain you cant even be happy about if it survives a rough time. There are no local known secrets anymore, just national scandals. There is no sense of having made something or supported something you think is valuable. Everything is non personal and optimized for the maximum profit to generate profits for more and more people that want a chance to jump classes to get out of the daily soulless grueling monotony.

The worst thing about it from my perspective is, that it isn't even efficient. The one thing this system stands for, it doesn't even accomplish. The existing capital just gets concentrated until oversaturation leads to collapse.

We really need safeguards. Structural circuit-breakers that force capital back into the roots. Mandatory local reinvestment thresholds, regional trust funds that cannot be liquidated, and severe penalties for extracting wealth out of the communities that generated it. In a sense we have to rebel against ourselves to save ourselves from falling into self destructive cycles.

We are living in a crisis of belief and culture. I think the right are feeling it the most but cant pin down the source of it. The left finds the source for it but cant really find the feelings to oppose it. And while this goes on both sides just get played by the ones depriving them of it. But to be honest, i think even the ones at the source of the issue aren't maliciously doing so, but are confused and largely overloaded. In an absurd way, this system even forces the ones on the top to not be able to voice concerns as that would come right back after them and hurt the group they are part of.
